Thye final week of the regular season is here, as this may actually be interesting for a change. Games of interest:

NO vs Carolina
Atlanta vs St Louis
Jax vs Baltimore
Dallas vs Philly
Jets vs Fins
Seattle vs Arizona
TB vs Oakland
Giants vs Vikes
Pats vs Bills

Enjoy the madness!

Hopefully the games will turn out to be interesting, and maybe things might actually go the Jets' way for once, although I've already counted them out for the year and have begun thinking about the NFL draft. Needless to say, I'm going to be the biggest Jacksonville Jaguars/Buffalo Bills fan this weekend, one of whom will hopefully upset their opponent this weekend to give the Jets something to play for Sunday evening other than pride. Even if the Jets make it, though, it's going to be a game against either the Pats or the Ravens, neither of which is a team the Jets have any chance of beating even if they get into the postseason.

Tomorrow should be interesting. Hopefully my Jets will get help from either the Jaguars or the Bills, although it wouldn't surprise me to see them go out and lose to Miami by four or five touchdowns if they got the help they needed to make the playoffs.

The game of the season is SD vs Denver,@SD on NBC late, for the division title and playoff spot.

Congrats to the Dolphins, who thoroughly dominated the Jets although the scoreboard wouldn't indicate it. It's time for the Jets to continue the now 40 year-long rebuilding process. :) :(

Also congratulations to Mike Singletary, who had the interim tag lifted from his title and is now the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Well deserved, and I wish him luck next season, as San Francisco will be a factor in the NFC with the way they've been playing since Singletary took over. :)

Interim no more: Singletary staying as 49ers head coach

Congratulations on the win. ;) I'll be pulling for the Chargers in the playoffs now that the Jets once again pulled defeat from the jaws of victory. This collapse may have been worse than the one in 2000. :)

An amazing, controversial season. Can you imagine in August saying that neither Favre nor the Packers would make the playoffs? That the Dolphins would be AFC East champs and the Pats not make the playoffs? The success of the rookie coaches and quarterbacks?

I like the Colts, if they can make it past San Diego (11-5 goes on the road to 8-8?). In the NFC, the Panthers are the most dangerous.

I feel bad for Detroit. I loved how Dallas collapsed.

It didn't take long this year for the coaching carousel to get into full swing. Three coaches were fired today: Rod Marinelli (Detroit), Romeo Crennel (Cleveland), and, surprisingly, Eric Mangini (New York Jets).

Marinelli fired after historic 0-16 season

Crennel fired after Browns' 4-win season

Mangini fired after 3 seasons with Jets

I understand the first two, as they've had years to get their teams at least into the playoffs but were unable to, but I don't understand Mangini's departure, especially given the fact that it comes just one day after the season ended, which looks to me like a heat-of-the-moment thing and not a decision that was really thought out, regardless of what Jets management would tell the public. Mangini led the Jets to 2 winning seasons in his 3 years, and one playoff appearance, and had things on the right track this season for a while. They did this to get Bill Cowher, but the joke appears to be on the Jets as Cowher has announced that he won't return to coaching in 2009, which is mentioned in the article linked above about Crennel being fired in Cleveland.

I was also suprised to see Mangini fired. I think you have to give a guy 5 years(unless he bombs so badly like Rod Marinelli or Cam Cameron last year), especially if he's won 2 out of 3 years. Weird firing...

It was a terrible move on the Jets part, and one done completely in the heat of the moment after the devastating loss to Chad Pennington and the Dolphins. The organization probably thought that they could easily lure Bill Cowher to the organization, but the news being reported today by ESPN and the NFL Network was that Cowher, although willing to listen to the Jets, will not accept any offer to coach the team, partly because of Woody Johnson's refusal to part ways with the GM and other members of the team's front office (Cowher wants total control over personnel).

Hopefully the team will move on from trying to get Cowher (because it's not happening) and turn their attention to Marty Schottenheimer. I know that Marty's never won the big game (or even made it there), but at this point with this terrible franchise I'd accept having great regular seasons and being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round or two over collapsing at the end of the regular season year in and year out like the Jets have for decades now.

Yes Tarl, Schottenheimer would be a very ironic choice for the next Broncos coach! LOL :( However, if Bill Cowher doesn't want the job, I would also want Brian Billick (he built one helluva defense in Baltimore), Jim Fassel or if Kansas City does indeed ax him, Herm Edwards..

I'll take Shanahan over all three of those choices had Fassel and Billick not taken time off...Billick might be good. I'm surprised Pete Carrol's name hasn't been trumped yet.

Well, three straight wins to cap off a 4-11-1 season seem to have bought Marvin Lewis an extra season...too bad Shanahan and Mangini couldn't have this type of job security :(

I'm picking the road teams for this one except for Miami. They got the Ravens in this one. For the Super Bowl I'm going with the Panthers and the Colts.
