My Super Bowl pick:

Bengals 38
Cowboys 21

I know it is a bit late for post-draft banter, but no college team got screwed more than my very own Kentucky Wildcats. Bad workouts haunted just about all of our guys who declared, especially Andre Woodson. After 71 TD passes, just 18 INTs, and two consecutive bowl wins in the past two seasons while playing in the closest thing to the NFL (the SEC), he deserved better than a 6th Round selection to a team with a clear star QB and solid backup....regardless of his workouts. Not to mention he set the NCAA record for pass attempts without throwing an INT this season...and he also led the Cats to beat the eventual national champion, LSU!

For once, I wish the NFL would draft proven results instead of potential hype...I'm tired of hearing about pedigrees of guys like Matt Ryan who played in cupcake conferences like the ACC. Please....

I wouldn't say it's a cupcake conference. It's not great by any means, but it doesn't suck. I give more credence to a Matt Ryan "pedigree" than the likes of Alex Smith or Colt Brennan. Those guys never played anyone good. And now Alex Smith panning out as a total flop and Colt Brennan got his  handed to him by Georgia (boo).

A little off topic, but I think this page is so hilarious (and true). Hopefully you haven't come across it before.
Mel Kiper.

I would also like to now essentially contradict everything I just said about the ACC not sucking by saying the Georgia Tech has the lamest home schedule ever created. Boring!

You're right about the ACC being better than the Mountain West and WAC. I just always saw Matt Ryan as one of those ESPN guys who benefit from great television bias each week. He threw more INTs last season than Woodson did in the past two years combined. Luckily, Colt Brennan was slammed by UGA or he may have actually gone in the first round or two for the same reason.

If it makes you feel any better-LSU had the most boring home schedule in 2006, then won the National Championship the next!

Will be posting the first NFL Updates on my blog (and here, natch) next week. I've bought my guides, read the stuff, and are convinced those people are idiots. The real deal kicks off next week!

Brett Favre asked for a release from Green Bay.

Look, while he did great in GB-Brett just make a damn decision. If you want to play, fine. But don't drag the Packers down with you. Now, the Packers have a choice, and I feel they will let him go, but this is too much of a distraction for the team (which is more important anyway).

Looks like Jacksonville is in some trouble. Players getting arrested, convicted, are they the new Bengals? (Gets beat up by Cincy fans & Jacksonville fans)

Note to Favre..JUST STAY RETIRED AS A PACKER!! Sheesh.. I don't think he should go the Joe Montana route and finish his career with another team!!

Well more less than thrilling news for my Broncos.. Brandon Marshall has gotten in trouble with the law AGAIN!! He was stopped for a traffic violation in June for swerving on the highway...this is his 4th arrest in the past year.. hmm he's starting to become the next Pacman Jones!

Also former RB Travis Henry who Denver cut a couple of months ago, tested positive AGAIN for marijuana!! Looks like this time he will serve a 1 year suspension. Last year he successfully appealed a suspension, but he's not going to be so lucky this time!!

I wish Favre would stop with the drama and just pick to play or retire. However, if the man wants to play, then he should be allowed to play for anyone he wants. Green Bay should not hold him back. Sure, it would be unpopular to dump him and then take the unproven guy as their starting QB. Green Bay is afraid that he'll thrive with a new team and they don't want him to win a Super Bowl with someone else or be perceived as the better option to Aaron Rodgers. By holding onto Favre against his wishes, they are proving that they don't wish him the best. Favre deserves better.

I really wish he would stay retired. It is unfair to the Packers to wait until now to reveal his intention to play again. They just spent the entire off-season building around Aaron Rodgers, not Favre. It's not fair to the fans either as he surely broke the hearts of many the first time, and will break them again if he plays for another team.

Nobody liked seeing Jerry Rice in a Raiders or Broncos uniform, Emmitt in a Cardinals uniform, Montana as a Chief, etc.

Don't do it Brett!

I am so glad that I won't have to watch Shockey twice a year now. He's such an undeservedly arrogant punk. The only member of the Giants I've truly, genuinely hated.

Brees loves his TEs. Maybe you're gonna be better off actually. Brees is the team leader and has much more presence than pre-Superbowl victory Manning. I think it's a good deal for NO if Shockey is healthy and productive.

IF being the operative word. Look, I like his talent, but he really did bring the Giants locker room down-look what they did without him! Maybe Sean Peyton and Drew Brees can do him some good. Now, all he needs to do is stay injury free, and avoid the Bourbon Street clubs/strip joints and he might be alright...

Blog note-I am doing the NFL in 2 large posts, I am nearly done w/ the AFC, then the NFC. I will post it here also sometime in the next couple of weeks, but before the 1st preseason game (I hope!)

Broncos WR Rod Smith is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL tomorrow.. I knew this was coming eventually.. Rod missed all last season due to major hip replacement surgery. Perhaps Denver's greatest wide receiver ever, who was undrafted out of college and spent his first season with the Broncos on the practice squad, Smith epitomized the words class and leadership...he will be missed!! But, from what I hear, Mike Shanahan wants to make Rod Smith a receivers coach, so that would be just dandy!! Perhaps he can whip those young, arrogant punks like Brandon Marshall into decent shape to be quality receivers!!

Boy this Brett Favre vs Green Bay Packers thing is getting WAY outta control!! The latest news is that the Packers, who are so desperate to keep Favre away from training camp, are now seriously considering dealing him to either the Bears or the Vikings, which is the last thing they wanted. I've also heard that the Packers have offered Favre a "substantial sum" of money to stay retired.. In the words of T.O, "Get your popcorn ready" the craziness continues!!

Another newsworty item from my Broncos camp: Safety John Lynch has decided to part ways with the Denver Broncos and has left camp. With his playing time significantly reduced, Lynch was very unhappy with the decision and is weighing his options whether to retire or try and latch on with another team.. It'll be sad to see him go, but its not a total shock to me.. Lynch very nearly did retire in the offseason and had to be talked into coming back by Pat Bowlen the Broncos owner.

So long John.. thanks for everything!!

I am not going as detaliled as I would like, so here it goes, the complete reader's digest version of my predictions, plus some commentary at the end, and away we go!

* Denotes playoff birth

AFC North

1. Steelers* (Bye)
2. Browns*
3. Bengals
4. Ravens

The Steelers may be the next AFC dynasty, with great talent on offense. The Browns surge is no fluke, but the Bengals are a mess and the Ravens are at least 2 years away from being any good.

AFC West

1. Chargers*
2. Broncos
3. Raiders
4. Chiefs

The Chargers are still the best, and you guys will love rookie RB Jacob Hester. The Broncos are not as good as thought, but better than the Raiders who have a weak defense, and the Chiefs who have a new team.

AFC East

1. Patriots* (Bye)
2. Bills
3. Jets
4. Dolphins

We know how good New England is, but the Bills are the Browns of 2007. The Jets will still struggle, and the Dolphins are in a tailspin, but with Parcells they have a brighter future.

AFC South

1. Jaguars*
2. Colts*
3. Texans
4. Titans

Jacksonville has the better team this year, as the Colts are starting to age, and noticeably at that. Houston could have a breakout year, but the Titans are taking a big step back.

NFC North

1. Packers*
2. Bears*
3. Vikings
4. Lions

With or without Brett Favre, the Packers are still the best. The Bears defense carries them yet again. The Lions just suck, and the Vikings need a QB, and Tavaris Jackson is not it, neither is Gus Frerotte.

NFC West

1. Seahawks*
2. Cardinals
3. 49ers
4. Rams

Mike Holmgren goes out on top once again, but the Cards should really do well-if Edge doesn't get hurt (no RB depth). The 49ers Alex Smith is a bust-but Mike Martz has to be a big coup as the OC. The Rams are terrible. End of story.

NFC East

1. Giants* (Bye)
2. Eagles*
3. Cowboys
4. Redskins

Eli Manning continues to make strides, and TE Jeremy Shockey is no longer a locker room distraction. The Eagles have a chip on their shoulder from a year ago. The Cowboys are overrated, and Jim Zorn has help in Jason Taylor on defense, and on the bright side, Jason Campbell can be a good NFL QB.

NFC South

1. Saints* (Bye)
2. Panthers
3. Buccaneers
4. Falcons

The Saints are marching, and want to show last year was a fluke. The Panthers are also as determined, but not as talented as the Saints. The Bucs are old, and the Falcons are now an expansion franchise who will be good in 3 years.

As a Green Bay fan it sucks to see this, not cuz im sad to see Favre leave, its that i have to deal with a whole season with Aaron Rodgers. Five bucks says he's gonna be injured for the season week 1. Every game he has been in, he's gotten injured.

I think A-Rod will do well, much like Philip Rivers did after SD let Drew Brees go. Have no fear, one injury or two doesn't mean he's a cronic piece of chalk. :)

It's a quick fix league. The Browns were terrible in '06 and were 10-6 in 07 and barely missed the playoffs. The Jets spent $100M on free agents. Anything can happen.

Been out of town for a few days partying in Vegas and thus haven't had much of a chance to post my two cents on Brett Favre becoming a New York Jet. So..

I love it!! :) Its a very intriguing ending to a very :(ed up situation where the Packers totally screwed Favre over big time.. Ok he deserves some blame for flip-flopping and changing his mind to play after he retired, but the majority of the blame for the stalemate has to go on Ted Thompson and the Packers organization. In some ways I was hoping that Favre would be released or allowed to be traded to the Vikings just so he could come back to Lambeau and whoop the Packers, but it wasn't going to happen. Anyways I hope Aaron Rodgers does well, I truly feel bad for him.. he was stuck inbetween a rock and a hard place and handled the situation very well indeed. And now that Favre is with the Jets, he actually gives them a much better chance to compete against the Patriots for the division title. And I believe my Broncos get to play the Jets this year so that will be great to see that game!!

Yes I agree Johnboy, Shawne Merriman should NOT be risking his career by playing with two torn ligaments..even as a Broncos fan I am concerned about his decision.

Oh and it looks like Chad Johnson has OFFICIALLY changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco..he has now officially become, in my book anyways, the most annoying player in the NFL, surpassing even Terrell Owens when he pulled all that crap on the Eagles. The Bengals should just cut ties with "Ocho Psycho", as Marvin Lewis calls him! :(
