I've never seen the Tom Baker Hound. Always wanted to. Bet he made a good Holmes.
I was watching my Private Life of Sherlock Holmes DVD last night, checking out the restoration section, and found a Holmes/Bond connection that I never knew about. In the original prologue Dr. Watson's great grandson comes to Cox & Company to open Dr. Watson's strong box. The bank manager is a big Holmes buff and says he's started a club, partly in reaction to James Bond ("the hairy chested brut"), who he thinks is awful. He much prefers heroes like Holmes. Watson says they showed Goldfinger on the plane and he rather liked it. They go on for a few more lines about Bond.
BTW, I've done some work on my Amazon Holmes list: There's No Place Like Holmes

This wasn't hard to see coming:
Young Bond inspires Young Holmes
As with YB, if it's done well and the author knows his Holmes, could be good.
I remember when he was Andy Lane! Didn't he co-write The Bond Files? That very good unofficial guide to Bond in all his forms back in the 90's.
He also wrote a Dr Who book called 'All-Consuming Fire' which featured a certain Mr Holmes: very good it was supposed to be, too. Here's a detailed synopsis (I think that Sherlock, Mycroft, their brother Sherringford and even their dad appear!) http://www.drwhoguide.com/who_na27.htm
Hang on; I just noticed- that Dr Who book also features a 'Baron Maupertuis': the villain of the first Young Sherlock book!

LAS VEGAS - Leave it to Robert Downey Jr. to turn Sherlock Holmes into a wisecracking action hero who ends up handcuffed naked to a bed.
Downey offered a sneak peek Tuesday of "Sherlock Holmes," his new take on the cerebral detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Theater owners attending their annual ShoWest convention got to see Downey's Holmes in a bruising boxing match, diving from a tall building into London's Thames River and trading barbs with roommate Dr. Watson (Jude Law), who complains about the detective's slovenliness and nocturnal violin playing.
"Holmes, does your depravity know no bounds?"
Watson asks the detective. In one scene, the unclothed Holmes finds himself cuffed by both hands to a bed. Downey also turns the detective into something of a ladies man as his Holmes gets a romantic interest (Rachel McAdams).
Conan Doyle's Holmes lived a monk's life, save for one purely platonic dalliance with a female foil whose intellect he greatly admired. Despite the saucy swagger and attitude of Downey's "Sherlock Holmes," directed by Guy Ritchie, the actor said the movie is true to the spirit of Conan Doyle's stories, which have plenty of action.

I'm reading this at the moment: it's pretty much just a Holmes novel with the Doctor making cameo appearances, and it's great stuff. Holmes and Watson are utterly nailed: I have faith for Young Sherlock.

I just wish they had him in the deer stalker. That would have worked fine with this eccentric version. A deer stalker would be a pretty eccentric thing to wear around London. Oh well.

I don't think it looks quite VAN HELSING-level bad, but it does look like Stephen Sommers could have been involved. This isn't a Sherlock Holmes flick to stand apart from the pack. It's a Sherlock Holmes flick that seeks to merge itself with the rest of the pack. Generic blockbuster mush.Looks like another Van Helsing to me sadly, though I must admit the final Carry On gag did make me snicker.

"But the bloody awful trailer did nothing for you in the afternoon."
"That was the curious incident."

SHERLOCK HOLMES Theatrical Trailer.
Make of it what you will.
Arf- a bit late to the party, Harms! Always best to check upthread to see what people are talking about before posting your new news!
That is quite a fun trailer, though. It looks like utter crap of course; but really fun, entertaining crap.
It's like one of those spoof movie trailers that you occasionally see of a "Mother Theresa: The Action Movie" type where they take a totally unsuitable subject (usually from British literature) and imagine Hollywood making a big dumb action movie about it, starring a muscle-y American chap! Like 'Churchill: the Hollywood Years', in fact!
Marvellous.

Well, I'm not sure, but I believe I posted in a different thread (from the General Discussion section) that's been merged with this one.Arf- a bit late to the party, Harms! Always best to check upthread to see what people are talking about before posting your new news!

With regards to the trailer: I reckon it looks stupid and witless and rather good fun, frankly!

- London looks great
- Story suitably intriguing
- RDJ looks like fun
- Only weak bit of the trailer for me was Jude Law - doesn't strike me as very 'Watsonian' - but what the heck - I'm in.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to his take on SHERLOCK HOLMES. The script was great fun, the filmmakers clearly know their Holmes... and feel free to disregard the canon in favor of something more interesting and unseen before. (I mean this in the best possible way.)
Oh, and I forgot to add: I think the trailer looks great!
