great idea.

That is positively brilliant - he definitely would fit the slot nicely in my book.

Molina is a bit of a cliched villain these days though...from Raiders of the lost ark to Boogie nights to Chocolat to Spider-man 2, and yet again in next summer's Da Vinci Code. I'd just rather have an actor we didn't already associate with other villain type roles.

I don't believe this guy. Just looking for publicity, until proven otherwise IMO.

I wouldn't quite believe that all yet. Considering all the rumour pieces out there (we have Quicklinked to some on CBn), nothing is official yet.

When I first read the book, I pictured Brendan Gleeson, who is currently stealing scenes in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" as Prof. Alastar 'Mad-Eye' Moody. For those who don't know what he looks like without the wacky eye:

Posted Image

He's pushing 50, so the age is about right. Not generally known for playing villains, unlike so many villain casting suggestions around here. He's featured in "28 Days Later", "Troy", "Gangs of New York", "Cold Mountain", "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" (as the Bond villain-esque 'Flesh Fair' emcee/operator Lord Johnson-Johnson) and alongside Pierce Brosnan in "The Tailor of Panama". He would have to discard his usual Irish accent, but I believe he did that in "Tailor of Panama" anyhow.

He's my #1 pick. IMO he has the right look, physicality, screen presence, and is the right age. Put him in a tux the opposite color of Craig's, and you've got yourself a game.

In this interview Campbell says he had considered some french actors for Le Chiffre. Did we ever get to know who those actors were?

Gerard Depardieu would make an excellent Le Chiffre.

Come on, let's have some Continental European villains for a change.

Has anyone suggested Oliver Platt? Physically he could be a very good Le Chiffre. He is a big enough name in the film world without being very famous and overshadow Daniel Craig. Although many of the suggestions have been excellent the problem is that the Le Chiffre character is more interesting than Bond. Many of Fleming's grotesque villains were more memorable than the deliberately undefined 'blunt instrument' hero. This could have the effect of making the villain a more popular character in the upcoming film, especially if Daniel Craig plays Bond more as originally conceived by Fleming. This is not to imply Craig is 'dull', it's just that to get close to the characters types devised by Fleming runs the risk of the film being unbalanced with a very gritty realistic hero and a very 'over the top' villain.

Vincent Cassel? =- He is currently battling Clive 'nearly 007' Owen in 'Derailed' - a trailer for the 'CR' that we could have had (except for Aniston that is - unless she played a female Felix Leiter?!..)

Oliver Martinez? - Played a baddie in Colin 'Too Sleazy for 007' Farrell's 'SWAT' film. Also he is Kylie Minogue's man so maybes he could bring her on board to perform the theme tune when she gets better?..

Gerard Depardieu - Do not rule him out. A frightening physical presence. A connaiseur in real life to match 007's tastes and an international star without being a threat to Bond's limelight.

Daniel Auteil - Quiet but could be so menacing. Good age, good with women (he is marries to Emmanuelle Beart who would have been a good Vesper, IMHO).

I mentioned him a few weeks ago, and I'm sure that this is probably not a very popular choice at all, but I kind of like the idea of Sam Neill as Le Chiffre. I think that it's a shame that he hasn't been in a Bond movie yet (and he would have made a terrific Bond had Timothy Dalton not been an option back in the 1980s).

What about Ray Winstone, very powerful screen presence and a great actor, could work well with Craig.

Bond villian? I don't know. He would be an alright Bond.

His Phantom was terrible though, no traces of the original character but that wasn't his fault.

Agree it should be a French actor...not too many are well known other than Depardieu & Jean Reno (who wouldn't be a bad choice actually).

I remember the picture on the back of my 1960's paperback...it was of Fleming himself smoking a cigarette and his old, grey, wrinkled face was semi-obscurred with the smoke..

He looked perfectly ruthless and vicious and I thought he had the perfect face of Le Chiffre.

He should be an old, diminutive man (about 60) with fading physique and voice but that still reminds you of a once powerful personality...sophisticated, educated yet vicious, cruel and depraved.

In short a sadist.

Perhaps Reno is too well known and too young to play Le Chiffre...

I can't think of anyone in UK-US film & TV who fit my idea of Le Chiffre but I'm sure that French cinema will have a few excellent actors.

I just made this suggestion in another thread. How about John Glover? He looks the part, save for the hair. Go look up some other pics on Google Immage Search. And he's a good actor.

Rowan Atkinson would not make a good Le Chiffre, and, honestly, after seeing him in Never Say Never Again, I would rather EON not have him as a character in any future Bond films, especially now that the series is going in a more serious direction. If it were a Roger Moore Bond film, then maybe that would be a better fit.
