Reading "The Man With the Golden Gun" for the second time - very enjoyable. Tried re-reading "For Special Services" recently, but found it just too silly, boring and poorly-written - I think I've had it with Gardner. I've made the effort with his Bond books, but find them, well, silly, boring and poorly-written. :) Oh, and it's not as though they've got all that much to do with James Bond, either. :) Like the recent Eon films, they come across as joyless and self-important attempts at being more "serious", "modern", etc. than the "silly", "dated", etc. '60s efforts, and, unsurprisingly, they end up seeming dull and daft, as well as (ironically enough) more imprisoned in a particular era than the old classics could ever be.

I just got done reading Casino Royale about a week ago and have just started on Live and Let Die and plan on reading the novels in order. Casino Royale was an excellent novel and I can't wait for the film to come out. Hopefully they don't mess it up.

I'm loving SilverFin at the moment. I've zipped through it and an amazing rate. It really is that good!

An informative book for sure. It kept my interested and was particularly good in the second half when centering around the Bond years.

It's my first time reading this book. So far it's better than For Special Services but not quite as good as Icebreaker(in my opinion anyway).

Gotcha. I think it's most definitely one of the middle of the road Gardner books. Not as great as For Special Services, Icebreaker or Nobody Lives Forever in my opinion, but not as bad as No Deals, Mr. Bond or The Man From Barbarossa.

... you remind me of not having read any Bond recently. I am a bit short on time but I will give it a go asp. Thank you for the inspiration. I think I will head for "Nobody Lives Forever".

Cheers,

I finished On Her Majesty's Secret Service yesterday -- this being the first Bond novel I've read -- and I'm hooked on Fleming. :) As we speak, Amazon is shipping me Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, and Moonraker (they came together and far cheaper than buying them all singularly <.<; ). Am hoping that they'll be worth their money. :)

I dabble in Bond books every few months, but recently I've been reading other stuff. At the moment, I'm reading Jurassic Park (which I'm close to finishing) and directly after I plan on reading its sequel, Lost World.

That should take me into a few days before Silverfin releases in the States, and that's when I'll pick up the book and get involved with Bond again.

Total excitement. :)

I've just finished Thunderball which has now become one of my favourites. It's funny because it reminds me more of NSNA than it's film counterpart.

I plan on reading From Russia With Love and then Dr. No next.

I've now finished all of the Fleming books, and Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis. Now I start my journey through the John Gardners. Starting at Licence Renewed.

My journey through the Flemings has advanced :) right now I'm halfway into From Russia With Love, having yet to see the actual Bond for once in that book and wondering why Fleming didn't get a SMERSH killing order of his own for all the painstaking and, according to the Author's Note, genuine descriptions of the Russian secret service and its people. :)

But, hey. I trust Fleming that it will get better. :3

Re-reading "Colonel Sun". Not only the best of the continuation novels (by far), but superior to some of the Flemings (indeed, superior to just about all of them apart from "You Only Live Twice" and perhaps also "From Russia With Love", I'd say).

Currently reading Octopussy and The Living Daylights then on to Colonel Sun, The Spy Who Loved Me (Wood) and Moonraker (Wood). I just got the two Wood novelizations this week. Can't wait to read them.
