I may as well give it a go, though when it comes to ranking things, I tend to change my mind more often than I change my pants.

1. Octopussy - Above TSWLM? I just think it's got better locations, and a better story, myself.
2. TSWLM - It's good!
Joint 3. FYEO - Beautifully shot, and makes a change from Rog's other films. Variety is good, after all.
Joint 3. Moonraker - It's camp, it's OTT, it's so silly that Ian Fleming (if he'd still been alive) would have had a heart attack. But it feels so good!
5. LALD - A good solid film; nothing spectacular (apart from the boat chase) but nothing too bad. And Baron Samedi's cool.
6. TMWTGG - Really not that bad; would liked to have seen Anders as the main girl, and a better beginning and ending, but my God, Thailand looks good! And it's got Christopher Lee
7. AVTAK - it has its moments, but definitely isn't 007's finest hour.

1. LALD - "If nothing else, at least I've laid your fears to rest."

I think this line to myself when I'm feeling blue and it's an instant pick-me-up. That along with the croc-hopping stunt (why don't the producers find maniacs like that guy anymore???!!!) and images of Solitaire, and I simply cannot live without this film. I felt the need to justify this selection since I think I may be the only one to rank it #1. The rest follow...
2. TSWLM - Classic fun.
3. FYEO - Too well constructed to rank it any lower.
4. MR - As good as TSWLM minus the slapstick that litters it.
5. TMWTGG - I just love nipples.
6. OP - I feel like I'm watching a cartoon.
7. AVTAK - I feel like I'm watching a very old man trying to keep breathing.

I must say that after finally viewing "The Spy Who Loved Me" (It pains me to watch Moore's films) I am utterly perplexed why this movie is considered a classic Bond film and ranks so high...It is slow. It is dull. Bach is a terrible actress. Stromberg is a poor man's Blofeld. The plot is a rip-off of the equally preposterous "You Only Live Twice."

There are only two good things about this film:

1) Bond's cold-blooded dispatching of a henchman off the roof ("What a helpful chap")...One of the VERY few times, Moore seemed Bond-like.

2) Carly Simon's title song.

(Interestingly, although Moore's films are the worst in the series, they feature the strongest selection of title songs..."The Spy Who Loved Me," "For Your Eyes Only," "A View To A Kill," "All Time High" (from Octopussy), and the best Bond theme of them all, "Live and Let Die").

By "finally viewing" do you mean that after 27 years you just watched it for the first time? Or do you mean that you have watched it for the final time?

If the former, then perhaps you have not given it enough of a chance? Or perhaps you missed out on the nostalgia aspect (which I believe is the primary reason most Moore fans enjoy the Moore films).

With your absolute negative opinion of Moore's Bond, I must say you're in the minority. Seven films... not only was he "Bond-like", but he defined "Bond-like" characteristics. However, any opinion is as good as the next, I guess.

Quite!

"It's Bond and Beyond!"

You don't get any better than The Spy Who Loved Me in my opinion when it comes to James Bond films. It's pretty much got it all. Roger Moore is on top of his game as British agent James Bond, the bond girl Anya Amasova is a terrific ally and partner to Bond along the assignment, there is a collection of interesting villains, plus great locations, witty lines, a magnificent plot, and just an overall feel that makes this film a standout in the series.

It's often that this is the Roger Moore film singled out as being the best, and is the actor's favorite also as many fans know.

If Roger Moore was getting settled into the role in Live And Let Die and The Man With The Golden Gun, then The Spy Who Loved Me is where he is in his prime. His age matches well with the character and the performance is very, very engaging. He really seems to be enjoying the film and it works well in the end.

Barbara Bach's Anya Amasova was a change from some Bond girl's in that she took more of an active role as being a partner alongside Bond. The chemistry between both characters is good, and having Bond kill her lover, Sergei, in the pre-credits sequence was an inspired idea, as it leads to a good conclusion for Bond and Anya.

Jaws, Karl Stromberg, and Naomi make up an all around good collection of villains for the film. Jaws is simply one of the most well known villains to Bond fans and non-Bond fans alike. I remember rewinding the scene where he uses his teeth to undo a lock in the first half of The Spy Who Loved Me the first time I saw the film. Naomi's playful wink to Bond before attempting to gun him down is also one of the best moments in the series. Period.

Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better is also one of those songs that both Bond fans and non-Bond fans know of well. It just works. And who can forget Bond 77?

It's two hours of pure excitement, adventure and just everything James Bond. It really is the best.

Yes, amazingly, this was the first time I have ever seen "The Spy Who Loved Me" in it's entirety...Don't know why it has taken me so long...Just really not that anxious to watch Moore's films, I guess. It's not that I have an entirely low opinion of Moore. Indeed, I have a very soft spot in my heart for "Octopussy," being the first Bond film I ever saw in the movie theater. I think it is more that I am such a huge fan of Fleming's novels that I just can't equate the suave but somewhat effete Moore with Fleming's vision of an assassin with "cruel good looks" (Hence, Dalton's status as my favorite Bond). Moore was perfect as Simon Templar and was good in "The Persuaders," but Bond? No.

I'm not convinced that you're completely accurate TRS. In fact, I might say Moore is the LEAST Bond-like actor and his films tended to drift into comedy. Very un-Bond.
