Can we handle an UNCLE that really goes to international locations instead of the MGM backlot?

I would actually love to see an UNCLE movie that shows off New York a bit like Skyfall shows off London. I don't think there's been a proper New York movie in a while, let alone an action movie. Not including Avengers.

Well that's Cavill 100% out of the picture for Bond if he does U.N.C.L.E.

Superman was bad enough, but Solo is far too similar to Bond for him to crossover, IMO.

I know the same could be said for Moore as Templar and then Bond, but that was TV to Cinema and in an era before mass viral marketing - Cavill's Solo will be drummed into us all on a subliminal level by the advertising savvy Guy Ritchie.

On a brighter note i think he's a great choice for Solo.

According to Burns (one of the writers) the action, ironically, is more Swinging London and European based.

Del: Does anyone know if the Burns script is the one they're using for the Ritchie project or not? I personally haven't seen any indication of whether that's the case or not.

Ritchie is also credited with a rewrite.

Armie Hammer says his next film will be "the man from uncle" starring alongside Henry Cavill.

From USA TODAY Cavill interview:

The actor does not buy into a Superman curse ("If anything bad happens to me, it's not because Superman made it happen"). Nor does he fear being stereotyped in the role — a fate that has befallen other actors.

"There is always that risk. But it's a risk I'm glad to take," he says. "The way to break out of that is to do a different role."

To that end, Cavill just signed on to star as a spy in Guy Ritchie's adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., replacing Tom Cruise, who is no longer associated with the project. He is tight-lipped about his Napoleon Solo role except to say he'll be alongside The Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer, who will play Illya Kuryakin.

"Things are full-steam ahead. It's all very early days. But it's gonna happen," Cavill says before pausing. "Well, this is Hollywood. It's supposed to happen."

"Good luck with that."

Cavill and Hammer are certainly a better fit for this UNCLE effort, especially when one considers there will be more than one film ideally.

So it sounds like Cavill has actually signed. I'm not sure that had been reported previously.

Cavill I get, but Hammer ?  Really ?  How about a more modern casting.  Such as, hire an Englishman to play one (Cavill), but hire a real Eastern Euro guy to play an Eastern Euro guy.  With the concern for the Chinese market in many films these days, why not change Ilya to a Chinese gent, or lady, for that matter, and use a person really from there in the role ?

Because they were casting someone to play alongside Cruise, so it had to be someone with some star power. Making a movie from a 50-year TV series means a lot of people won't be familiar with the original material, so you need names to get people's attention. Or at least that's how Hollywood thinks. Actually, replacing Cruise with Cavill may mean that the two roles are given more equal prominence than would've been likely with Cruise in the lead. So it may come closer to the original series, especially if Cavill and Hammer turn out to have some screen chemistry. Maybe. One can dream.

latest Cavill interview:

LOS ANGELES—Henry Cavill is going from “Man of Steel” to “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” “I can tell you that I am signed on for ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,’ ” confirmed the actor du jour in a recent interview at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.

“That’s so far going very well,” he said of preproduction for the film adaptation of the 1960s TV spy series with Armie Hammer as costar and Guy Ritchie as director.

“I am very excited about it,” added the actor, who has barely landed as the caped crusader but now he’s stepping into yet another high-profile role. Henry is taking over the role after Tom Cruise had to back out because of production schedule conflict (his fifth “Mission Impossible” will shoot around the same time as “The Man From…”). “I can’t wait to work with Guy and Armie. I can’t tell you any details about the script yet because it’s a long way from development… [but it will still be] about the Cold War. American and Russian super spies join teams to fight international terrorism.”

He and Armie will play the roles originated by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum—as operatives in the United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.).

These big breaks came to Henry after he lost a string of major parts where he was a serious contender—the James Bond role that went to Daniel Craig in “Casino Royale” (Henry was deemed too young), Batman (Christian Bale), Superman (Brandon Routh) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

International terrorism? We might not have Spectre around anymore but perhaps Thrush is about to make a comeback.

Love Guy Ritchie, but I'll have to see how Man of Steel goes before I can believe Cavill can carry an action movie, though.

He might be newly retired but David Beckhamis wasting no time in lining up a new career.TheFIX has exclusively learnt that David has been sent the script for Guy Ritchie's new film and will be auditioning for the lead role later this month. Woah!

Our source reveals that after months of private acting classes, the former LA Galaxy star now believes he could nail the lead in new spy movie, Man from U.N.C.L.E.

(Perhaps the villain?)

I suppose if Superman didn't rule Cavill out for Bond then this will... I'm definitely going to have to check this film out if and when it comes to light, it seems to be pretty popular here at CBn.

Here's an equation for you: Man of Steel + The Lone Ranger + Sherlock Holmes = box office smash?

That's what the execs at Warner Bros. are probably doodling on their legal pads.

Cue the Jerry Goldsmith theme music, and memorize the acronym: In The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the Sixties spy series starring Robert Vaughn as secret agent Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as his Russian partner, Illya Kuryakin, U.N.C.L.E. stands for United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.

You can bet that Henry Cavill, the English actor with the fresh megahit on his hands  -- Man of Steel, in which he plays some illegal alien with a fancy cape who swoops around Earth -- and Armie Hammer -- soon to be seen as a masked lawman galloping around Texas with a Johnny Depp-like Indian in The Lone Ranger -- are studying up on their U.N.C.L.E. DVDs and dossiers right now. This fall, Cavill and Hammer will head to Europe to shoot the big screen adaptation of the beloved NBC show. Cavill will be Solo, Hammer Kuryakin.

Steven Soderbergh, recently retired from directing, was working on an U.N.C.L.E. movie a couple of years ago, but Warners took the project away from him. The newly revived iteration has Guy Ritchie, of the two Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes hits, assigned as director. The Man from F.R.A.N.C.H.I.S.E.?

Yes, it looks like they will be really shooting in Europe instead of the MGM backlot!

Now U.N.C.L.E. is really heating up!

With a host of big budget films gearing up to shoot in the UK this summer, the country’s studios are busier than ever. But with the new TV tax credit threatening to bring in even more business, Geoffrey Macnab asks whether the UK has the capacity to cope.

These are seemingly boom times for British film studios. As we enter the summer, several very large budget films are preparing to shoot in the UK.

Kenneth Branagh’s live-action, Disney-backed Cinderellawill be made at Pinewood as will Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. JJ Abrams’ new Star Wars film is also expected to shoot at Pinewood as is Avengers 2.

Over at the Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, the Wachowskis are shooting Jupiter AscendingRush director Ron Howard has exchanged Formula 1 cars for the world of whale hunting with his new feature In The Heart Of The Sea. Meanwhile, The Man From UNCLE is also revving up at Leavesden.

Yes, with luck it will be out for the 50th anniversary.

Here's the latest interview:

Armie plays David’s character, Illya Kuryakin, a Russian spy. Henry landed Robert’s role, Napoleon Solo, after Tom Cruise gave up the part due to a shooting-schedule conflict.

“I would have loved to work with Tom, but at the same time, I’m also excited to do it with Henry, because it adds a different twist to the movie,” Armie said in a recent interview in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

At the time of our interview, Armie said he has not met Henry or David. “I’m excited about meeting both of them,” said the great grandson of the late oil tycoon and art collector, Armand Hammer. “Hopefully, I’ll get to meet David while making the movie. We start shooting in August.”

“I’m also very excited about playing a Russian,” Armie added. “I’m in the middle of my research phase now. I’m studyingicon1.png the political climate during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was a fascinating time globally. It’s such a great script (by Scott Z. Burns), and it’s so funny! Guy Ritchie has such a great take on it.”

Huffington post:

You're playing Illya Kuryakin in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."
Yes.

I feel that people unfamiliar with the show might not realize how cool that character is.
That's very true. I had no idea before I got involved with it.

The actor who played him in the series, David McCallum, became a heartthrob because of this character.
Oh, dude, he had the way with ladies. He had all of the spy gadgets. He was tough. He was cool. He had everything. He was like the original Bond.

It's an interesting movie because "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." was a popular show in the '60s, but it hasn't been a sustained popularity like something like "The Lone Ranger" or "Star Trek." Do you think it needs to be completely reintroduced?
I try not to think about that. I mean, that seems to me-- you know, Guy Ritchie, who's directing it, that's in his wheelhouse. I'll let him worry about that. For me, like I said, my job lies almost exclusively between when the director says "action" and when he calls "cut." So, it could also maybe be more freeing. That we do have a bit more artistic liberties to take with this. Because there are less people who are staunch fans of it.
