Why does anyone care about what gets an Oscar and what doesn't? It's just Hollywood slapping itself on the back for publicity. It doesn't affect the cinemagoing public in any way.

My favourite films of this year have included Rabbit-Proof Fence, Goldmember, Anita And Me and I enjoyed DAD too, up to a point. If any of these got an Oscar it wouldn't increase or decrease my enjoyment of them at all.

If I was a film producer, all I'd care about was how many cinemagoers my films attracted. Who cares what the critics think? They don't pay for their tickets.

too true Coop, too true. but y'all know why DAD didn't get squat, don't you? several years ago the Academy passed a rule saying they could no longer give nominations or awards to films that were part of a series. (Goldfinger, i believe, was nominated for something like special effects / set design, no?) i am currently researching into this ruling and so will have more info soon, but if anyone knows better then do not hesitate to post it here.

That's not true, what about the "The Lord of the Rings" films, the Star Wars series, and some others. I'm drawing a blank right now. DAD could have at least gotten "Best Makeup" for Zao's face. "Frida" and the awful "Time Machine" were both nominated for best makeup:eek: The Academy members just don't take Bond films seriously, even if they're good.:)

Yeah, diet soda really is disgusting.

And it is quite a pity about the CGI in DAD - for one, it's very out of place in a Bond movie, but it's never bad enough to make me not love that film.

Damn, Terminator 2's CGI did look a lot better. That was also a really awesome movie. Anyone looking forward to Terminator 3?

I think everyone's forgetting that the Oscars, or any other awards for that matter, don't hurt anyone, they just benefit those that have been nominated; ergo, there's no reason to get so upset. (By the way, solitaire, I don't mean to be an *** here, but if you're going to correct someone's grammar like you did w/ Won Ton, you may want to learn how to spell "hypocrisy" first..)

Anyway, what does everyone predict? It's early, I know, so predictions now will differ than those of a few days before the ceremony, but why not?
Here are my predictions--these are based on previous awards and such, not my personal preferences:
Picture--Chicago
Director--Scorsese
Actor--Brody or Nicholson
Actress--Kidman or Moore
Supp Actor--Cooper
Supp Actress--Streep
Orig Screenplay--Far From Heaven (it has to win something, and this will suffice, especially if Moore loses Best Actress)
Adapted Screenplay--Adaptation or The Hours
Animated Feature--Spirited Away

"i think i fairly defined a dogmatist in my response. from your responses towards me i can refer to you as such. also, your still stuck on insulting me. you didn't give any reasons why my opinion was wrong, except that i was stupid and obviously wrong because i don't agree with you.
you're right, i don't know you, and by the way you seem to like attacking people on the forum who state their own opinions, im glad i don't."

Congratulations, Won Ton! You just had your first conversation with "Reply-and-get-insulted"-solitaire. He bothered me then and now he still bothers me, but I quit arguing with him 'cause it's a) not possible to get to a good conversation and :) just not worth it.
Trust me, don't get too upset and save your time.

At least, there two points I totally agree with you, solitaire. TTT is definitely the movie that deserves the "Best Picture" Oscar. What the LOTR crew did with TTT is simply amazing. The animation of Sm

there's always bob barker.:)

two towers is definetely the best movie of the year, they did an excellent job with the cgi. the score was good, Ian McKellen was excellent again as gandolf. while i didn't particualarly like how they increased the love intrest part of the story, i just shrug it off and hope they have good reason for it.

Actually, Bob Barker has made several advancements on me a few years ago, but I got a restraining order against him. Maybe that will foil his diabolical plans...

Adam - If Daniel Day Lewis doesn't get the Oscar for best actor then the awards are more of a farce than ever. His performance was simply amazing. You totally bought into him as that character, but that character is so different from the actor that it really is hard to believe that he pulled that off as brilliantly as he did.

He deserves the Oscar for that performance.

Go Derrick, so nice to find another evita fan. People who think chicago is good should look back 7 years for the best musical of recent years.

I'm not saying I think Brody or Nicholson should beat him, I just gave my picks based on the current buzz, which will probably change.
Brody is the only non-winner (Day-Lewis, My Left Foot; Nicholson, 3 Past Awards; Cage, Leaving Las Vegas; Caine, 2 Awards), which gives him a huge advantage. Nicholson generated huge publicity and praise for About Schmidt; plus he's getting old.
If I had my choice, I'd choose Nicholson, simply b/c he's my favorite actor, but each performance is pretty unique & deserving.

For me, it's very simple: DAD deserved nothing. TT deserved everything.

And by the way:

"I wish I had a nickel for everytime someone accused me of being "insulting" on this forum I could retire a millionaire."

So, if so many people said you're insulting, didn't you ever have the idea that it could not be all that wrong?
And I wish I had a nickel for every insulting and pointless post of yours; then I could feed every poor child in Africa and China for two years and still retire as a millionaire. :)

"For me, it's very simple: DAD deserved nothing. TT deserved everything."

How can you say that? DAD got what it deserved: two Golden Razzies for Madonna :) :)
Concerning TTT: it doesn't deserve everything, but definitely quite alot. :)

I didn't say your -threads- are pointless, I said your -posts- are pointless. There's a slight difference in there, isn't there?
And you already gave the answer to the question why I "feel the need" to reply to your posts: most of them are insulting and no-one should get insulted without being allowed to defend him-/herself. And I think you can't just go here and there and reply to someone who's just stating his/her opinion that he or she is an idiot, only because they don't agree with you, without being told that this isn't right.
And if someone says WHY he/she (doesn't) like(s) this or that, they just get another insult.

"I've always considered you to be an idiot, and you continually prove my point."

You just can't stop it, can you?

The simple solution to your problem with me is to never reply to any of my threads. People stating their opinions are fine, but you have said "offensive and insulting" things since I have been posting here. Mostly homophobic. That is the main reason I detest you and your "opinions".:)

Can you stop it?
