I think Moore carried the films through a very awkward period in history, and had the films tried for a Connery clone, the franchise may have died a death. While some of Moore's quips and gadgets make me cringe a bit, I still think he was a damned fine Bond, and deserves a huge credit for stepping up to the plate after Connery. Connery was not an easy act to follow, but he managed it with style.

FYEO. I love the PTS, no matter what anyone says. The rest of the movie is pure gold. Great Bond girls, great suspense, great everything. Second would be OP.
It's great to see For your eyes only up there in 2nd place behind TSWLM.
Also, I feel the PTS is underrated. It is quite a dramatic scene, and one of the best things about it is that there is no score, just the constant humming of the helicopter, until Bond regains control.

Although I have to say it only beats The Spy Who Loved Me by a hair. Definitely my two favorite Rog films.

2. TSWLM(Jaws hampers this film)
3. LALD(Good premiere, Moore best performance)
4. TMWTGG
5. AVTAK(one of the worst, Moore was 58!)
Haven't seen Moonraker or Octopussy. Overall Moore in his earlier films played a good Bond. He was best in LALD. But his best film IMO was FYEO. LALD had that long, boring boat chase. If Moore had signed on earlier he would have been terrific. Another reason he's not in top 2 Bonds is b/c his lack of physicalness. When you watch Moore's fight scenes there unbelievable. Whereas you actually believe Craig or Connery COULD kick you ***!

2. Moonraker
3. The Man with the Golden Gun
4. Live and Let Die
5. Octopussy
6. For Your Eyes Only
7. A View to a Kill
I think TSWLM and MR are Moore at the height of his powers. MR's plot is pretty much the same, only in space, but it's damned iconic and influential. It is spectacle and fantasy through and through. Fun done right.

Personally, when I watch a Roger Moore film, I want camp played to the hilt. If I want a serious outing, I’ve got Dalton or Craig for that. Camp is not necessarily a bad thing when it’s fun like this. His others are just too campy... fun to watch, but too campy.

I wasn't implying camp is bad... I came to Bond via the novels and Sean Connery films, so Roger Moore's Bond - while entertaining - was often too campy for my taste.

For Your Eyes Only, IMO, was kinda dull because they removed all the gadgets and humour. I enjoyed the over-the-top bonds that Roger was able to do. Live and Let Die was fun and The Man With The Golden Gun was great too - I loved Britt Ekland. She was absolutely gorgeous. Barbara Bach was hot too, as was Kristina Wayborn of Octopussy.
Ken Adam's sets in Spy Who Loved Me/Moonraker were awesome. I also loved the Marvin Hamlisch score in Spy and John Barry's score in Moonraker.
I wasn't a huge fan of A View To A Kill. Roger was super old, the mine set looked dull and it did not really feel like a bond movie.
With that said, Spy is number one. But as a kid growing up, I loved the Moonraker movie and still love it to this day. Tons of entertaining and great scenes. The openings for these were great too: Ski Jump, and Fight in the air with Bond taking the parachute and swerving Jaws.
Roger Moore 4 Life!

No Moore film does it better.
With the possible exception of Octopussy...
As an interesting sidenote, I saw recently that the BFI online review of the Bond films rates Moonraker higher than Spy. Yes, the British Film Institute...

Tsk, tsk. Moonraker has some fine stunts and some great moments and I could never truly dislike it (the way I actively dislike TMWTGG and have difficulty enjoying it), but it is basically an inferior rehash of everything TSWLM got so perfectly right, with Star Wars thrown in.
And following my recent viewing, I would understand the argument advocating Octopussy, but I can't agree.
Moore's performance in OP is definitely his best, though. It showcases his impenetrable charm, his goofy sense of humour and his ability to take proceedings seriously when need be. Octopussy herself is also easily Moore's best Bond girl and possibly one of the best Bond girls, ever. There are times when Bond truly seems as though he is falling in love with her.
My problem with the film is that its madcap circus environment and settings (as well as Bond's increasingly weird apparel) are just too bizarre for a Bond film and don't accurately celebrate the franchise (or more importantly, the formula) well enough.
As for those who think For Your Eyes Only is Moore's best, again I understand, but I disagree. The film is a decent, serviceable little thriller and I'm quite glad it exists, to show how Moore could take the character seriously with the right director, but I'm glad he reverted to classic Moore in his following two films.

"For Your Eyes Only" is the only good Bond film of his stretch, and "The Spy who Loved Me" is okay. The rest are pure rubbish (though I liked certain parts of View to a Kill - like the milkman assassin sequence).

001. For Your Eyes Only
002. Live and Let Die
003. Moonraker
004. Octopussy
005. The Spy Who Loved Me
006. The Man with the Golden Gun
007. A View to a Kill
Numbers 3 to 5 are fluid, but that's where I'd put them today. Ten years ago, for instance, I would have placed The Spy Who Loved Me higher, but I was more impressed with Octopussy than I expected on my recent viewing.
Ultimately, I like them all. I was even surprised at how much I enjoyed The Man with the Golden Gun (which I had previously avoided re-watching) and A View to a Kill (which is still seriously flawed, but - c'mon - Christopher Walken!).

The Spy Who Loved Me
Octopussy
Live And Let Die
Moonraker
The Man With The Golden Gun
For Your Eyes Only
A View To A Kill
For Your Eyes Only is a good movie, don't get me wrong, but it's just so bloody dull! I can honestly say that this is the first Bond movie that I have sat down and watched, and got completely bored by it. Hopefully the BD will do it some justice.
Saying that, the movie does have some great scenes. The PTS and the Death of the Countess spring immediatly to mind. There is just nothing particuarly groundbreaking about it, it has no tension and the villains are incredibly, INCREDIBLY useless. I don't find them menacing at all.
