Favorite Sean Connery James Bond Film

From Russia With Love -- the only really straight-ahead spy thriller is an easy winner for me.
Dr. No -- Yep. This really is my second favorite, despite the fact that it's really dated, like it could have been made in 1954. I like the Connery's raw performance.
Goldfinger -- Overrated. Guy Hamilton is a much smoother director than Terence Young, but I miss Young's mise-en-scene.sixty
Thundereball -- First of the Big Bonds, but somewhat less the sum of its parts. Young seems a bit at sea helming a film of this scope.
You Only Live Twice -- as the apex of the sixties spy boom, it's a hoot. As a Bond film, it stinks, and may contain Sean Connery's worst performance as an actor.
Diamonds are Forever -- A Roger Moore movie starring Sean Connery. So lightweight I'm surprised the images stuck to the film.

No way, it's a unique performance and progression to reach his zen-like Buddha state of YOLT he had to get through the nervyness of DN/FRWL and the super smug GF/TB to a point where he's beyond even having to show himself off.

That's an interesting perspective, and certainly an arguable one. I can certainly see how you could look at Connery in YOLT and thing that he is Just Too Cool.
I tend to see an actor so bored with his part that he can barely keep his eyes open.

The last ones I still love, just not as much. I think Diamonds are Forever was the first Bond film I saw through and through.

I picked You Only Live Twice because it's the closest Connery got to being in an epic, outrageous Moore-type Bond film.
Nice! I'm thrilled to see some love for You Only Live Twice. People often complain that Connery's performance was "mailed in", and maybe it was, but it inadvertently helps the film. Connery's understated performance as Bond helps anchor Roald Dahl's outlandish space plot. I love the locations, the escapism, and Barry's beautiful score. This isn't the best Bond film starring Connery, but it certainly is my favorite.
To think, in You Only Live Twice, Bond was one air conditioning unit away from going into space. He'd have to wait twelve years before getting another chance in Moonraker. Both films directed by Lewis Gilbert.

Diamonds Are Forever is is finest work. It's simply the most entertaining of his movies.
Diamonds Are Forever is another Bond film that gets a lot of criticism, but I don't think it's that bad. I actually find it rather fun.

Goldfinger. I don't know, there's something about a gold lady and a man who loves gold all in the same movie.
Remember folks, money is not evil, it's :
...the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

Amen (and I am being serious).
I believe that You Only Live Twice is my favorite Connery Bond film. I really stands alone and it's cool seeing a British agent in Japan. The characters were lovable and I especially liked Tanaka. He was pretty good. This was also the first film where Connery started getting a little big and his interest to playing the character kind of winded down, but I still think it's his best one!
You Only Live Twice is my favorite film with Sean Connery, too. Good point about Tanaka. I thought he was a wonderful counterpart to M.

DAF is without a doubt my least liked Connery Bond film by far. DN, FRWL, GF, TB, & YOLT are all excellent films that are stylish and cool....and then there's DAF. A complete cheese-fest, more cheese than anything Moore or anyone else ever did.

Commenting on DR NO from the James Bond dvds is a little like being asked to review 'Genesis" or "The Gospel According to Matthew." It IS what it is! Connery WAS Bond from the instant he appeared on screen and remember Ian Fleming, his creator was still alive at this stage. (Fleming in fact saw the first three Bonds but died before the release of THUNDERBALL)

Fleming died before Goldfinger was completed.
It's nice to see some belated love for DAF. It was the first Bond I ever saw, and in retrospect it is easy to see that Connery was more engaged in it than he was in YOLT. It had all the elements that the series is known for, and I was happy with it.
That said, it comes in second on my list after THUNDERBALL. TB had all the elements in spades.
Nothing really comes in last for me. There are those I like, and those I like best.

Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball.
Not necessary in that order, but there we have: the beginning, Bond at Casino, the three Bond girl formula, the elegance, the wit, the non-over-the-top gadgets, the strange but non-ridiculous villains... Everything what Bond is or should be.
Connery IS Bond.
(Well, I´m not so radical. I also love OHMSS, TLD, CR...)

This actually ranks as one of my favorite Bond movies. I loved the fact it was so different.
I think it has some of the best dialogue of the series and Barbara Carerra as Fatima was so deliciously evil that she was the best femme fatale of the whole Bond genre. NSNA is a movie that regularly finds its way into my DVD player
Agreed. NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is different, yet stylish. Even if the ending is a bit of a letdown (DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, LIVE AND LET DIE, All Brosnans anyone?) the movie is a class act. Connery is better than in its two last Bond films and the casting is one of the vey best out of 22 movies. The take on the nuclear threat differs sufficiently to justify its existence and the locations are gorgeous. NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is good, even if some of you rejects its different filmmaking style.

YOLT is by far my favorite Connery Bond film. It simply destroys the other ones and is one of my favorite Bond films overall, while the other ones are either pretty low on my list or really low.

I cannot tell you how strongly I disagree with this assessment. In FRWL, we see SPECTRE lay the genesis of a plot, with Bond set up to face an inevitable one-on-one confrontation with a seemingly indestructible killer, and we watch "the fuse burn" (Fleming's phrase) as the entire chess match between the two men comes to a final battle, terrifically staged in no less a setting than the fabled Orient Express. There is suspense (the scene in the mosque), action (the battle in the gypsy camp), and, yes, even some humor ("Will you make love to me in England?"/ "Day and night."). It's an intelligent, even riveting, story, and its scope is increased by the helicopter and speedboat battles added at the end. Tatiana is very beautiful, but obviously naive, and it's surprising that you cite her as annoying at the same time that you praise DAF (with a heroine who amply warrants that description). As for Bond ally, I suggest that comparing Kerim Bey to Jimmy Dean's Willard Whyte requires no further discussion.FRWL is terrible! boring plot, annoying Bond girl, boring Bond ally and a villian that Bond could kill with a door knob. DAF is his best for its humor and entertainment value.
I quite liked DAF on my first viewing, but it has sunk like a stone in my esteem in the years since. John Brosnan, in his seminal James Bond in the Cinema, pointed out that the story calls for a young Lauren Bacall, whereas instead we get something closer to Lucille Ball. He wasn't impressed by Wint and Kidd either, and neither am I. As for Charles Gray's Blofeld, he's got to rank as the most ineffectual villain in series history (he has Bond imprisoned in a room with a hatch in the floor, conveniently located above a rope), and his threat to obliterate Washington with a laser generates no suspense whatever. When the threat is laughable, it's not possible to generate suspense by adding a character hammily intoning, "Two minutes and counting." As for humor, well, I'll give you that, but I'm not going to Bond films for comedy. I want an intelligent thriller, featuring that dangerous fellow with the license to kill.
Judged on that scale, FRWL delivers. Sadly, DAF does not.
