[OHMSS Spion]

Is it just me, do this movie and SPECTRE seem like they will share a lot of common threads? Both feature the return of a criminal organization from the 60's (SPECTRE and The Syndicate) and both will have some political drama with other agencies wanting to shut down our hero's agency and combine it with theirs. To be fair both of those seem to be themes common in other films, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but I'm wondering if part of the reason that M:I 5 got bumped up to summer rather than winter was that there would be lot of comparisons between the two plots, intentional or not. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I think they bumped it up to summer so that it wouldn't be crushed by Star Wars.

I think those are superficial similarities at best. I am not anticipating a lot of common threads between SPECTRE and Rogue Nation. It is a good pick-up, Spion, but I don't think M:I re-booting The Syndicate will have the same resonance to the story or to fans as the return of SPECTRE will.  I just think Cruise and Co. are dipping into their M:I ideas bin, but will be using what they find in a very different way to how it was originally constituted: viz Brian De Palma taking the idea of Jim Phelps from the original series and turning it on it's head in his film Mission: Impossible.

 

I'd say the reappearance of The Syndicate in concert with SPECTRE is coincidence only. While the general movie-going public will make some high level general comparisons between our two franchise-leading Super Spies of James Bond and Ethan Hunt, it will only be to the extent they have ever done so. The Syndicate in M:I RN seems to be a rival or "anti-IMF", and the trailer indicates we will see direct competition between them with the two organisations facing off. SPECTRE by contrast will be a much more Quantum-like organisation I suspect. I do not think the casual movie-goer will draw too many parallels between the two. To the extent that shadowy organisations, deep-seated conspiracies, and good guys fighting for their existence are currently de rigueur in these kinds of films we could put down to zeitgeist.

 

You do draw an interesting comparison between MI6 and IMF both being under fire from the authorities and having to justify their existence, but of course we have already seen this scenario re MI5 several years ago in Season 3 of the TV series Spooks. It's practically trope.

 

While I'm not expecting any parallels, you do make me wonder if EON and Mendes would be tempted to re-shoot minor scenes or dialogue if the earlier release of M:I RN does reveal some accidental similarities.

 

Re release dates, from where I'm sitting, M:I RN will definitely be coming out in winter!

While I'm sure it's a coincidence that they're both reappearing now, and not either franchise trying to copy the other (and these things happen, like Antz and Bugs Life, or the two Snow White movies that one year), I'm kinda wondering how much it's both franchises looking at the reappearance of HYDRA in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and thinking "hmm, so audiences will buy a secret organization with a codename again? We can use that." And of course the rights to SPECTRE returning to EON for perfect timing. At any rate, I'm looking forward to both movies, and Rogue Nation will be a nice appetizer while we wait for SPECTRE.

It may well be on purpose and even inspired by winter soldier(which I doubt), but the Syndicate were mentioned at the end of Ghost Protocol and the rights for SPECTRE did just become available, so a coincidence can also be argued.

I'm very excited for this movie. The first Mission: Impossible was the first spy movie I ever saw, along with my first PG-13 movie. I'm going to a screening on Monday and then opening night on Friday.

McQuarrie is a great writer and director.  Cruise is always watchable.  The M:I-movies have always entertained me.

I'm seeing this next weekend. I'm looking forward to it. I admire Tom Cruise and his approach to action. In Rogue Nation, for example, he holds his breath for six minutes underwater and clings onto a plane while it takes off. That's wild stuff.

Sounds like another GHOST PROTOCOL, which is to be expected.

What M:I really needs is a great villain for Cruise to go up against. That, more than anything, will help shake up this stale franchise.

Just got out of the screening. Bottom line, I loved it. Some nice callbacks to previous films, a lot of great action, and lots of funny lines. I was interested in how they'd do the secret organization bit, and I feel like they pulled it off well, without it seeming like too much of a retread of HYDRA. And it'll be different than SPECTRE I feel, as that will have a more personal nature, if going by the trailers. There were some moments that felt similar to sequences in Bond films, but probably only for those of us who have seen them all multiple times (so everyone on this forum), but nothing felt like a cut and paste job. If you enjoyed the previous films, especially Ghost Protocol, you will enjoy this one.

Saw the film this evening and it is excellent. Possibly the best of the series. It lacks the scale of Ghost Protocol but I actually feel this was a strength. This was a tighter and leaner film that races along with maximum efficiency. The entire cast is excellent but Rebecca Ferguson steals the film. Here's hoping they bring her back for the next film. If I have one complaint it would be

that the villain is underused. He spends most of the film off screen and when he does appear he doesn't have much to say. He isn't able to make as big of an impact as I would like with his limited screen time.

Ultimately it is a minor point because the rest of the film more then makes up for it.

Saw it last night. Very good. Some excellent cinematography and directing, especially the opera sequence which was the highlight of the film for me. Some nice location work but also some fake-ish London street scenes which, as a Londoner, I found disappointing. Rebecca Ferguson is great as the female lead; very tough, and sexy as hell. But strangely, Jeremy Renner has little to do in this one.

 

Worst thing was that they sprung the SPECTRE trailer on us during the previews, and I had to stick my fingers in my ears, hum the TB and LALD themes to myself, and look at my shoes to avoid any spoilers.

For my part, I wanted to see this trailer on the big screen, but it Wasn't shown.  Clearly we should have swapped viewings.

 

Anyway, MI, superb.  Very clever, everyone on fine form, a thrilling bike chase with stunning cinematography.  Cracking stuff all round.

Some other things.  There were any number of partner production companies, including Bad Robot (JJ Abrahms), Skydance, China TV (or some such) and another unknown name.  Also, Cruise seems to be producing himself this time without Paula Wagner.

 

A very eclectic mix of partners.  I thought this level of producers was something only ever done if they couldn't raise the money from one hit.

I live in America. The number of previews shown can vary wildly from film to film so it is simply not practical to try and time it to the last second. But I get your point. Kind of obvious is would be shown.

I had the SPECTRE teaser too which was disappointing.

 

As for Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation, it was very entertaining. Pretty good action and suspense in it, the motorcycle chase was exciting, Tom Cruise was Tom Cruise, and Rebecca Ferguson was very good. However, I would still rate the original Mission: Impossible and Ghost Protocol better. But Rogue Nation is a solid #3 in the series for me.
