True - I don´t see that either. Maybe it was indeed planned at some point - but after the last two films had become massive hits Cruise probably said: nah, this is my franchise.
Of course, the inevitable reboot after that will feature someone else.

If he stays in shape, Cruise can gracefully hand the reins over to someone that he handpicks as a successor, but it need not be a total passing of the torch for quite a while. Connery pulled off action-oriented roles for years in movies like The Rock, Entrapment, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen without being the full-on "action star." I'm not speaking to the quality of those movies, only his ability to still retain believability as the lead as he aged.

It will be interesting to see whether Cruise can age gracefully into the elder statesman. Connery always had this major charisma that made him believable in anything. I enjoy Cruise´s work a lot - and I do think he has a stellar screen presence. But he cannot even approach Sean Connery.
To be fair, there are extremely few actors who can.

Quite, the man has a knighthood for a reason.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I wasn't trying to draw an equivalency between Cruise and Connery. Connery is singularly unique.

Yep..(Thanks for posting Napoleon!) And we know that along with Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Sean Harris and Alec Baldwin are all returning. Still no official word yet on Ving Rhames but I wouldn't be surprised if he does. And Tom Cruise is cooking up an even more impressive and absolutely crazy stunt for this film which may top his hanging outside the taking off cargo plane and Burj Kalifa tower climb.. ![]()

No Renner this time..

Rhames is confirmed, Renner is not, unless he appears like Rhames did in IV

Some photos from the first few days of shooting.

Since Sean Harris is back as Solomon Lane in this one and seems to be the one in the straitjacket, I'm a bit worried that this film will again preempt what I'd like to see happen in a fifth Craig film, with the villain escaping and plotting his revenge. That is, if that fifth Craig film happens.

It's been short hair followed by long hair every other film, so I'm a bit surprised they broke that pattern. The hair looks about the same length as in Rogue Nation.

Oh, yes, that could steal BOND 25´s thunder indeed.

Looks like Ethan's back on the motorcycle again. That's three out of six films? Four if you count him just riding one to the runway in M:I-3.

Here's a really good interview with Christopher McQuarrie on directing and what tone the franchise will take on now. Interesting comments on Bond as well (not negative).

Thanks for the link - it really is a great interview. Although I still believe that all this work on a script during production is not a sign of new great ideas but of constant second guessing due to panicking producers and studio executives... and movie stars.

It's really worth catching the Empire podcast with him from when Rogue Nation came out- it's fascinating to hear how a film like this takes shape.

Well that's certainly surprising news!
Spoiler tagging this just in case people find it too revealing.
