Rumour was Beale was to be the villain.
In an early draft Bond met Q in an East End Cafe. Q was described as a rather plump middle-aged man. I'd say that this was the part that he was considered for.

Could well be, sounds like a natural role for him. As I say, Beale for the main villain was just rumoured. If the early script's Q fits his description I'd say that's probably closer to the truth then, especially since there are certain parallels drawn between Bond and Silva.

If King Lear is scheduled for early 2014, i think Sam could start working on 24 (pre-production/casting/ecc) during this summer. Than the second unit could start filming the action scene while he is doing KL, then he could start filming the rest of the film, and the film should be ready for the end of 2014
I thought King Lear was debuting this November? (Either way, pre-production is usually 6 months to a year, so we'd still be looking at a late 2014/early 2015 production start.)

Where did you find this out?

It is amazing to me that everyone is not thrilled that Mendes may be back. He made a Bond film that not only was the biggest film in the franchise's history, but was critically acclaimed and nominated for major awards (and should have won many more). He pulled off the difficult feat of giving us something both familiar and unique, combining the old and new and making a 50 year old franchise seem fresh and relevant to today. The sequence on Silva's island was worth the price of admission. And that single take of Javier Bardem's introduction was a directorial masterstroke- probably the single most audacious filmaking move in any Bond film. We'd be fortunate to have him back.

A good post.
That said, plaudits and revenue aside, 90% of those spoken to in my circle of friends and colleagues couldn't find that much to get excited about. Indeed, people are revisiting QoS and saying nicer things about that film.
Maybe, for my part, and in my dotage, Bond films are only recognised for what they are, one film post their release. Maybe I will relish SF after the release of Bond 24. I do still however enjoy the whole canon.

Well, if folks are going to turn this into just another argument over who's better Newman or Arnold, I'll put my shout in for Newman. David Arnold was alright for the 90s but his work got old and boring. Newman's score for Skyfall was more interesting and classier.

I'm not sure about this. I get the impression that Mendes wanted to do one Bond film only. He's that kind of director, always something different. Maybe the success of Skyfall is making this decision for him.
I only want him to do the next one if he's passionate about it. If he is, cool. If not, it's gonna suck.

But Mendes likes visiting some themes in his movies, and not only in Skyfall. The back at home is for example an essentiel point which appears in a lot of films.
I recommand this excellent article, written by my friend about Mendes and Skyfall http://jamesbonderie...nglish-version/
If Mendes is back for the 24th, I don't think it will be very different in the form.

I expect Bond 24 to have similar themes and will be very close to Skyfall like

I loved Skyfall, so I'm pleased that Mendes will be back, but that's not a failsafe recipe for a great movie. There are so many elements at work, script and casting can also save or wreck a movie.

But that's what makes Mendes a good director: he gets the best people to work on his films.
Tbh it's the cast and cinematographers who make his films worth watching, for me. Mendes' real skill is picking good scripts and getting his cast to deliver some of their best work. Meanwhile, Conrad Hall and Roger Deakins make each film look beautiful. What makes him a good director is his producers letting him give his assembled team room to do their best work. Obviously, it becomes self-fulfilling...
I think his films are a great example of how collaborative filmmaking works and how modern auteurism allows directors to walk away with most of the critical praise.

After reading the last 15 or so posts I had four comments in no particular order that no one in particular may care to hear...
1. Couldn't imagine not having Ben Whishaw as Q. He is one of the things I am most excited about as the Bond franchise proceeds.
2. Love hearing Mendes is likely coming back.
3. Hate to wait on the next Bond but I don't want a half-arsed Bond while trying to juggle his schedule.
4. I have been on the QoS badwagon since opening day.

I think if Mendes does return.....we will likely see either South Africa or New Dehli in the film since neither feature in Skyfall and probably they will use the location eventually as the producer did scout the area so they might consider using it for Bond 24

India fell through as a location for SKYFALL because it was too difficult logistically, which may put Mendes off trying again. South Africa is definitely overdue though, as it was also scouted for CASINO ROYALE.I think if Mendes does return.....we will likely see either South Africa or New Dehli in the film since neither feature in Skyfall and probably they will use the location eventually as the producer did scout the area so they might consider using it for Bond 24

Mendes probably will try to make BOND 24 look very different from SKYFALL - so I expect no dark cityscapes, no gloomy countrysides or London but bright beaches, snow and jungle.

Mendes confirms to The Stage that he's back in the Bond frame
Mendes, whose Bond debut as director of Skyfall last year turned out to the most commercially successful of all the 007 films, grossing more than £100 million at the domestic UK box office alone and over $1 billion globally, added that he is in discussions to direct the next Bond film.
“But nothing is going to be determined until Charlie and the Chocolate Factory [now previewing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane] has opened,” he said. “I’m literally here from 8.30am to midnight every day, and it occupies every inch of my attention. So we’ll make decisions about that once Charlie has opened.”
I think things are a lot more developed than he's letting on and he's timing the announcement to coincide with the opening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Anyway, this is the firmest confirmation yet - from the man himself.

I hope so, as long as they keep the realism.
I would love a snow adventure! Also, Craig would look good in Jamaica, especially with Roger Deakins' shooting it...

Ooo, exciting. I was wondering why they were waiting so long to announce it given it seems all-but-confirmed on the 'net. Guess this was another compromise made for Mendes - he wants to guarantee Charlie's success free from the shadow of Bond.

Been there, done that.
What about the island of Borneo, French Polynesia, Belize, El Salvador or a Pacific atoll?
