While we have a general video game discussion thread, I thought we could also have one dedicated to the new console generation that has and is about to launch. The eighth generation includes Playstation 4, Xbox One, Wii U (debatable), Playstation Vita and Nintendo 3DS.

As it currently stands, I am most excited for PS4. Sony appears to really be serious about taking the market back. They are targeting the core gamer by making the PS4 all about games. Xbox One, at least on the outset, does not appear to be the successor that 360 deserves. Blocking out used games, requiring an internet connection and promoting the TV side appear to be alienating the core base that made the 360 so attractive. Microsoft needs to step up their game if they want to hold serve against PS4. The Vita, while currently well behind 3DS, may start to make a comeback upon PS4's launch.

As for Wii U, it's debatable that it is even an eighth generation console. The visuals aren't even as crisp as the 8 year old X360 or the 7 year old PS3. This console appears to be more of a stop gap to a true next-gen console that arrived several years late, than the console Nintendo is banking on for the next cycle. Nintendo is relying on the same tired franchises that we've been playing for 30 years and a number of third party developers/publishers have declined support for it. Most notably, EA stating they have no games in development for Wii U. Nintendo has to do something big or else we may be witnessing the downfall of Nintendo.

Nice idea - the hardware side of things!

I have been with Microsoft since the XBox and then 360. I am ready for this XBox One BUT now the idea this seems to be everything else except, at core, a games console looked fantastic but is it what we really want?

I need to look into the PS4 as it seems the pros are stacking up for what they will offer...

Yeah, that was kind of what I gathered from it. Microsoft seems to be repeating the mistakes that Sony made with PS3. It's still very early so we'll see how things play out (we still haven't actually SEEN the PS4). I've been a PS gamer the good ole' PS1 days, but I've never disliked Xbox. I hope that Microsoft is able to get it's head of it's ass by the time this thing launches.

Sony - First Place

Microsoft - Second Place

Nintendo(as usual) - Third Place

This about GAMING, not television, social networking, none of that. Sony is getting it right, Nintendo tried to but failed, and Microsoft is failing.

I used to have the PSOne and then PS2, then moved to XBox and the 360, so have done both, bar the PS3.

I agree Ace, the XBOne looked very swish, fast and stylish, but the showcase was like watching a new LoveFilm/Netflix sort of service - splitting screens to watch a movie and look at the internet? It's good, but the consoles were for next-gen games first, the other stuff comes second but it felt this was the other way around.

I know price will make a difference and just what the clear cut specs are to each when we know.

I've spent THOUSANDS of dollars on the Xbox 360 and the games, DLC, Live, all of that.

I might just make the move to the PC platform.

Probably a sound investment. Also, I can't understand why MS is so intent on promoting Kinect. Why does the Xbox One require it?

Another thing, Xbox TV. Who is going to want to pay for that, for something like the Halo TV Series?

The more and more I think about it, the more I get uptight.

I am looking forward to the new Call Of Duty Game, Ghosts, however I wasn't impressed with the 10 seconds they showed for EA Sports UFC. That whole trailer for EA Sports Ignite Engine was dominated by the NFL and FIFA games. MMA is becoming a big household sport and I feel It needed more than 10 seconds of just a cinematic cutscene of WEC 53.

True, but I think they did that because of the sales whores that FIFA and Madden are. I wasn't impressed by those either.

The new engine is nice, but I really don't see a difference when compared to their current one. The UFC thing just irritated me, being a fan of the sport of MMA.

So there's supposed to be 15 new franchises with 8 of them being exclusive to the Xbox One.

Oh and I can't help but think how new games like Batman: Arkham Origins, Grand Theft Auto V, Saints Row IV, and many more are going to be hurt by eighth gen consoles.

With all of the new things they want to introduce, I'll be surprised if it's false. It'll most likely be true.

I wonder what Microsoft would do if Xbox One in fact does have always-online DRM and the launch is reminiscent of the Diablo III and SimCity launches. This is why it would be disastrous if Xbox One does have this.

Even worse for the X1 than the always-online DRM, though, is the possibility of having to pay $60 to MS just for the console to play a used game.

I'm not sure, but they basically confirmed that you will be paying to play used games and from what I saw it probably is going to be that high.

Anyone like to play the estimation game? Don't know how? Simple. Guess how much money they'll lose for wanting people to pay to play used games.

One as in it's all come full circle, I guess (?). 720 was never going to be the name. Something people came up after the 360 had been out. Take the original which fanboys called for a bit, Xbox 180, then add 180 and you have the second console, Xbox 360, add 360 and they figured the third console was to be called Xbox 720.

I loved reading some reaction to the console from social media, one being:

"Why is it called X-Box One? Because Microsoft have taken 359 steps backwards."

"I don't need my fridge to watch TV, nor my laptop or mobile phone or car. So I sure don't need my games console to either."

"The worlds most expensive TV remote."

All good points now I think about it with a clear head.

I'm still not sure this really answers the question about paying a fee for used games. Although, it does seem like something similar may be in the works for Playstation 4, but like Microsoft, Sony isn't talking.

I would imagine that both Sony and Microsoft are going to have some way of trying to prevent the sale of pre-owned games built into the PS4 and XBOX One respectively, it's just a matter of them figuring out exactly how they're going to pursue that.  I think their best bet would be to try to accomplish it from the retail end of the problem, where they'd be dealing with Gamestop and other retailers directly, rather than at the consumer end.  They could probably generate a similar revenue stream that way while also saving some PR with the consumers if they did it that way, but I can't say I fault them for wanting to recoup some of the money that these retailers have been making off of their merchandise, however they decide to go about doing it.

So funny!

I`m probably going to go with a PS3 or 4 because it has a Blu Ray and Grand Theft Auto. If Nintendo only had GTA, I`d be all over the Wii U and as much fun as I`ve had playing it, I`m not running to the store until I see some actual decent games come out for it. My only interest in Xbox is Halo and that was when it came out.
