Serra's song is the worst thing ever to happen to Bond music. I recall Jim, our moderator, commenting on listening to this song: "I'd rather be sprayed with hot dung."

If Kleinman does pull off something special that truly adds to or emphasizes the effect of the song, I wonder if those who have so far disliked the song on its own may change their opinion once they have those visuals to add to the experience? Has that happened to anybody with any of the past songs?
In 2008 I was hoping I'd like AWTD more with it accompanied by the title sequence. But no such luck - I still didn't like the song. I think No Good About Goodbye should've been the title song for QoS. The melody was utilized by David Arnold in the soundtrack and I think it worked quite well.
I was just thinking how great No Good About Goodbye would work as the end title for the film. "I Never Left," then Vesper's necklace in the snow, segueing into the gentle strings leading into that melody with Dame Shirley singing Bond one more time. Works so much better than the rather jarring gunbarrel/bond theme at that moment.

It's such a dreary song and puts me to sleep. Writing's on the Wall is much better, IMO. It has more of the necessary ingredients of a 'Bond song' in the first ten second alone, and it does have its moments of soaring vocals.

I expect I'll enjoy that even more when I watch it again after the film opens, when I turn up the sound so I can hear the song.
Then again, if the song is as dreadful as half the posters say, maybe I'll just leave the sound off...

I spotted this on Classic FM's website but I can't find it anymore - turns out Newman conducted the orchestra for this.....

Mm. Not really one of the greatest Bond themes ever, but nice video.
Still no MGW? Man, he's been VERY absent in this production. Hope he's alright.

Thanks. Was looking for the instrumental yesterday.
Surprised we still haven't found a site with any Thomas Newman previews yet.

Indeed. Not even on iTunes.
Pre-ordered the score CD for its German release this Friday. So... three more days...

Three more days until I have to excuse myself for a couple of weeks in order to avoid post-premiere spoilers from across the pond.

Nothing on iTunes here. Strange.
As for Thomas Newman being involved with the theme - I've looked on the Classic FM site and haven't found anything either, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was involved. It's interesting - last time on Skyfall we had one "interpolation" as it was called of the theme in the score CD, but here we have a complete instrumental version, apparently. Admittedly Sam Smith wrote and performed WOTW much earlier than usual in the film's production - but if Thomas Newman was involved on the recording side of the song might it mean it also gets a few more "interpolations" in the score itself.
We'll know within a few days!

Last Sunday on social media - not here - I commented that in just over a week I'll finally know, amongst other things, who Franz Oberhauser really is - and he might really be Franz Oberhauser.
By the end of 26th October I'll know.
I don't envy you the period between 26th October and 6th November. Why can't they just release it on the same day everywhere? But they never have, as far as I know. (And we've been in the position of having to wait here too!)

As an alternative, here is the actual song with vocal removal (the best by far that I've found on the net)....

I don't know if this is already discussed (57 pages is too much to quickly read), but I'm listening right now at the version of Sofia Karlberg (never heard of her) and that is a very great version. So it's not that a bad song afterall, it's just the singer, not the song.

Take a listen to this amazing rendition of Writing's On The Wall/Skyfall sang by talented 15 year old Laura Smith. Beautifully blended together with the 'Skyfall' theme in this piano mashup, this girl sings WOTW far better than Sam Smith IMO.

I still hate this song, but if the instrumental version is used for the opening credits, I'll squeal louder than Sam smith in the actual song. Lol

So what you mean is that it is another shorter version what you can hear in the movie and is not the same as the album instrumental version?!

Yeah. Another even shorter version than what we get on the OST album that's Newman's own arrangement

It's like, 12 seconds or something.
And regarding the 'WOTW' song, it makes so much sense with the gorgeous title sequence, matching up lyrically and emotionally to the film. One of the best title sequences in the whole series, not just the Craig era.
