I rewatched the series over the last month or so, rating the movies as I went. Here's how it turned out, best to worst -

1. Goldfinger
2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
3. Dr. No
4. From Russia with Love
5. Live and Let Die
6. GoldenEye
7. The World Is Not Enough
8. Licence to Kill
9. Thunderball
10. For Your Eyes Only
11. The Living Daylights
12. Tomorrow Never Dies
13. The Spy Who Loved Me
14. The Man with the Golden Gun
15. Diamonds Are Forever
16. You Only Live Twice
17. Die Another Day
18. Moonraker
19. Never Say Never Again
20. A View to a Kill
21. Octopussy

I had trouble with Die Another Day's ranking because it still feels like two different movies to me. The first half would've landed it in the area of Live and Let Die/GoldenEye, the second half would've ranked between Never Say Never Again and A View to a Kill. So it ended up somewhere in between.

I enjoy the '54 TV version of Casino Royale. The '67 spoof version, not so much. But I won't compare either to the other movies.

Strange to see another person forgetting about For Your Eyes Only... For about a minute after I compiled my list, I ran my eyes up and down it to figure out why I only arrived at 19 films - Then suddenly FYEO's absence clicked, but only after really looking at the list for a good minute.

Good Bond film, definitely, but the more I think about it, in my opinion it really isn't one of the more memorable installments in the series.

How I rank the 20 Bond films and why.

1. From Russia With Love
Easily my favourite. Plays like a serious detective story and is utterly riveting from start to finish. One I only watch as a special treat to myself.

2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Despite Lazenby's less than stellar performance, this is one of the best action thrillers of all time. A great plot and a devastating sucker punch to the gut ending.

3. Dr. No
Simply for the scene of Ursula Andress emerging from the sea in that little swim suit. Woof!

4. Goldfinger
Ahh, a classic. One of the most enjoyable movies ever made, and Sean Connery is truly iconic in the role.

5. The Spy Who Loved Me
Again, another classic. This is one of the first Bond films I can remember seeing. Moore is marvelous, and in my opinion this is his greatest turn as Bond.

6. You Only Live Twice
Again, huge fun from start to finish. One thing that struck me about this particular entry was the beautiful locations. A film that you can really lose yourself in.

7. Goldeneye
A cracker. Brings Bond into the 21st century, and into the new world order. Deftly deals with the fact that the cold war is over, yet still makes Bond seem relevant. Also, Pierce Brosnan truly immortalises himself in the role, becoming as iconic as Connery IMO.

8. Licence To Kill
A thrilling revenge story with shades of Yojimbo. Shows a different side to Bond, and truly gives Dalton a chance to shine in the role. The script plays to Dalton's strengths as an actor. It's more realistic than the other films, and IMO it's the most under-rated movie in the series.

9. For Your Eyes Only
I like this one because Roger Moore takes it a little more seriously than he did the others. He's even quite ruthless in some scenes. Carole Bouquet gives a cracking performance as a woman out for revenge, and it's nice to see Moore not trying to get her into bed throughout the entire movie.

10. Octopussy
Again a great story, and like YOLT has beautiful locations. This film also has my favourite Bond girl. Maud Adams as Octopussy, yum. She seems better suited to Moore and is more believable as a romantic partner for him, as she's the only Bond girl who doesn't look young enough to be his daughter! I love the opening sequence as well with the little tiny jet.

11. The Living Daylights
I love this one. Dalton hits it out of the park IMO. His take on Bond, whilst different to what we've seen previously is more realistic and human. It has an interesting story, a great supporting cast and is generally a very engaging movie all round. I really like John Barry's score too.

12. Thunderball
Pure popcorn action fun. Although I do find it a little overlong.

13. Moonraker
This like TSWLM, is one of the first ones I can remember seeing. Yeah, it's not the greatest film, but it elevates itself when the story takes Bond into outer space. This contains my favourite musical score out of all the Bond movies.

14. The World Is Not Enough
I like this one! A lot of people don't seem to, but I thought it was really good! I enjoyed the story, and I actually didn't see a lot of the twists coming when first watched it! Brosnan gives a great performance in this movie and the scene where he forces himself to shoot Elektra is heartbreaking.

15. Tomorrow Never Dies
Huge fun from start to finish, reminiscent of TSWLM. Nothing really new here, but proves how well the formula works after all these years.

16. Diamonds Are Forever
This is my least favourite of Connery's Bonds. It seems as tacky and false as the Las Vegas it's set in. However it does have it's moments, such as Wint and Kidd who always make me chuckle.

17. Live And Let Die
Again, never been too keen on this one. I find some of the sub-texts slightly rascist. I doubt this was the film-maker's intentions, but it's always the message I've got from it. It always leaves a sour taste in my mouth after I watch it.

18. The Man With The Golden Gun
Not very good at all IMO. Just boring to sit through. It's a real shame, because Christopher Lee is utterly wasted. And that whole "goodnight, goodnight" thing is tedious and unfunny.

19. Die Another Day
Total pants. Starts of really well, then descends into total lunacy. Invisible cars, ice palaces, gene therapy, no thank you. Brosnan deserved a better send off than this.

20. A View To A Kill
And Moore deserved a better send off than this. Totally wastes it's excellent cast (Christopher Walken, Patrick Macnee) in a boring story. Everyone seems bored in it aswell, and it's tedious to sit through. IMO this is the worst one out of them all, and I've only ever watched it all the way through once or twice in my entire life.
A real no-no.

Honourable Mention:

Never Say Never Again

I didn't include this because it's not an official Bond movie, but saying that I do like it. I like the angle of it being about an older Bond, and Sean Connery excels in the part once again. I always enjoy watching this one.

And I rank them thus:

1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
2. From Russia With Love
3. The Living Daylights
4. Goldfinger
5. For Your Eyes Only
6. You Only Live Twice
7. The Spy Who Loved Me
8. Thunderball
9. GoldenEye
10. Diamonds Are Forever
11. Live and Let Die
12. Dr. No
13. Licence to Kill
14. The Man with the Golden Gun
15. Octopussy
16. Moonraker
17. Tomorrow Never Dies
18. The World Is Not Enough
19. Die Another Day
20. A View to a Kill

To explain the top three:
OHMSS- Tightly constructed, lots of character and momentum, a knight's epic for the late 1960s- a tale of chivalry and fated love. Exciting, touching. John Barry's moody score manages to transcend the film onto a level above all other films in the series. Kinetic cinematography. Lazenby manages to 'suggest' Bond more than playing him, but he never becomes a 'weak link'- the film is too good for that. And as a bonus, a brilliant safe-cracking sequence.
FRWL- Because of Connery being so terrifically focused throughout, and because of the suspense building once we enter the Orient Express. The 'little chat' with Red Grant seems to last forever, but we sense the tension leading up to the fight- a slow-burn effect unequalled in the rest of the series. Very good use of sound, especially when it is used less than you might expect. Bond is a killer and a seducer, but we sense his emotions- there is no need to express them explicitly, as in later films.
TLD- The last truly great Bond film, despite Glen not being one of my favourite 007 directors. Cinematography is somewhat static, little interest in colour or composition. But Glen's strong side also come to the fore: a fluent, detailed storytelling sense. Dalton is more than impressive, especially when you take into consideration that he hardly had time to rehearse the part. Romance, wit and suspense, solidly and effortlessly in the tradition of great spy thrillers like The Third Man and North by Northwest.

I have taken on the tedious and laborious task of compiling the results. So far I have tallied the 41 people who posted on the first two pages of this thread. I will continue to add to it as I have time in the next few days/weeks.

Here it is:

1. Goldfinger, by a whisker over...
2. From Russia, With Love - still a classic
3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service, solidly in third
4. The Spy Who Loved Me - consistently Moore's top vote getter
5. Goldeneye - fans like Brosnan's debut
6. The Living Daylights - Dalton's debut fondly remembered
7. For Your Eyes Only - the return to seriousness passed muster
8. The World Is Not Enough - Brosnan scores in top half again
9. You Only Live Twice - Japanese locale saves over the top film
10. Thunderball - rounding out the top half (bet you thought it was higher)
11. Dr. No - the debut still rates
12. Die Another Day - mixed reaction places it in the middle
13. Licence to Kill - revenge story all over the map from 1 to 20
14. Tomorrow Never Dies - least liked of Pierce's 4
15. Live and Let Die - seems dated
16. Octopussy - surprisingly low ranked
17. Diamonds Are Forever - uh, no.
18. Moonraker - this brings Bond back down to earth
19. The Man With the Golden Gun - and stupid plot
20. A View to A Kill - the geriatric Bond, the worst Bond girl ever, etc.

Most #1 votes: Goldfinger, 9, followed by FRWL, 8
Most #20 votes: Man With the Golden Gun, 6, and A View to A Kill, 6
Movies with both #1 and #20 votes: FRWL (!!!!), Thunderball, YOLT, OHMSS, LALD, Moonraker, Octopussy, A View to A Kill, Licence to Kill, Die Another Day.

I will post an update when I can.

Yeah, I was surprised at Octopussy. Moonraker always lost me when they went into space. As for TND, let's just say that Ian Fleming never gave Bond a semi-automatic.

Equally as surprising though, but the other way around is that The World Is Not Enough was that high based on the usual slamming of that film on CBn.

I believe fully automatic is the term you're looking for.

And I beg to differ, look at the end of DAF. He sits on an anti-tank gun...I don't think Fleming had any reservations about Bond using some heavy fire power if the situation called for it.

And indeed it is, possibly the best way to really rank the movies.

Excellent work, Belvedere

Here's my Eon list (There are some really fine aspects to NSNA; I have never had the opportunity to see Casino Royale):

1 Thunderball (I love the Bahamas...vacationing there a few times owed to TB)
2 OHMSS (Everytime I go sking, I fly down the piste with Barry's theme in mind)
3 Moonraker (fond memories of wathing it on opening day all those summers ago)
4 Goldfinger...the sexiest girls in the series and Connery looks outstanding
5 The Spy Who Loved Me...recall it being overshadowed by Star Wars that summer
6 Tomorrow Never Dies (The score is magnificent, Pierce IS James Bond here)
7 From Russia With Love...nasty bunch of villans
8 Die Another Day...an outstanding 90 percent of a motion picture
9 You Only Live Twice...remember watching this as a kid on ABC tv. Barry scores
10 Licence To Kill...not as Bondian but Dalton is fantastic.
11 The Living Daylights...My first ever 'date' to a 007 movie...slow in parts
12 The World Is Not Enough...I had a wife then, born in England...she loved PB.
13 GoldenEye...Worst score in the series brings it down several notches
14 Dr No...ahead of it's time bringing Barry, Binder, Adams together 1st time
15 Octopussy...Last movie me and grandmum saw together at the theatre. She loved Roger, God bless her soul.
16 A View To A Kill...Great song...Walken does a great job.
17 For Your Eyes Only...remember being underwhelmed at the theatre after the epic-ness of Moonraker 2 years earlier.

The aspect ratio makes these efforts look weaker than they ought to have been

18 Live And Let Die...great song and titles
19 TMWTGG...Lee was worthy of a meatier Scaramanga - Count Dooku's predecessor

20 Diamonds Are Forever...Bond looks chunky, Las Vegas looks boring, Americanizing of 007...a mistake...still great song and titles and Connery puts in a top notch effort in a 'knowing' sorta way. knowing he's getting a nice fat paycheck for himself and good old Scotland.
