Always nice to see someone else list Licence to Kill as their favorite Bond film.  Even better to see both it and Quantum of Solace getting some love.  For my money, those are not just two of the most underrated films in the franchise, but they're just two of the best, period.

I could easily make a case for Licence to Kill being my favourite Bond film. A lot to like about it.

The first 9

Super cool awesome. Mass entertainment with a hint of artistic flourish. Comsumer product with a hint of maverick. Still have no idea how they did it. YOLT is beautiful. You're missing out, those not keen on YOLT.

1 - GOLDFINGER

2 - THUNDERBALL

3 - DR. NO

4 - FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

5 - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE

6 - LIVE AND LET DIE

7 - DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

8 - ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

9 - THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

Casino Royale

Welcome back, Mr. Bond.

10 - CASINO ROYALE

The Bondbusters

Lavish, beautiful blockbuster spectales. (Slight) Disneyfication of Bond going on here though, particularly with TSWLM (Less so with MR's savage doberman attack). MR isn't tremendously engaging, really, but it is lovely.

11 - THE SPY WHO LOVED ME

12 - MOONRAKER

The 2 flawed gems

James Bond on the edge. Not perfect, but fresh, invigorating, and with flashes of truly exceptional.

13 - QUANTUM OF SOLACE

14 - THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS

The rest

The rest.

15 - A VIEW TO A KILL

16 - SKYFALL

17 - OCTOPUSSY

18 - LICENCE TO KILL

19 - TOMORROW NEVER DIES

20 - FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

21 - GOLDENEYE

22 - DIE ANOTHER DAY

23 - THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

I guess you've forgotten Stromberg's secretary becoming shark chow.

You know? I only just realized that's another thing those two films have in common. Treacherous female assistants who get chewed up for their troubles.

Right on, tdalton! LTK and QoS are, to me, two of the most interesting films in the series, due in part to how the character of Bond is analyzed. In these two films, he's living in a completely grey area and you really sense the internal conflict as he's trying to get on with his job, and that's fascinating to me.

I've always dug the minimalist "less is more" approach and, even though they're considered by many to be the weaker Bond entries, those two films in particular are engaging due to what's really at stake: vengeance and the risk of losing yourself in that process.

I've done this before but it was about 3 or 4 years ago when I first joined the forum and just completed a marathon. Skyfall has come out since then and I just rewatched Casino and Quantum tonight so I figured I'd do it again. I also like how some people have categorized them into groups. I think this is helpful because the number doesn't describe everything.

Certifiable Classics (Very hard for this list/order to change)

1. From Russia with Love - THE SPY MOVIE OF SPY MOVIES. No further explanation needed
2. The Living Daylights -  I know this one doesn't always get much love but Dalton's portrayal + globetrotting + a real SPY film = perfection. Bond in Afghanistan gets me every time.
3. Casino Royale - Brought Bond back from the depths of the Brosnan era. Invigorating.
4. Goldfinger - Connery at the top of his game
5. (tie) OHMSS - Possibly the most complete film outside of Casino. True to Fleming. Best Music.
5. (tie) The Spy Who Loved Me - The 70's Bond. Moore's most solid perfomance, but that might just be childhood nostalgia. Anya as Bond's true sidekick really puts this one up there. As someone above said, it was the Bondbuster

Top-Notch Films

7. Skyfall - There is little to complain about but it wasn't an instant classic like Casino. Very great film for the 50th.

8. Goldeneye - The only Brosnan film that is truly compelling, no doubt because it was originally written for Dalton
9. Thunderball - The last one where Connery looked like he gave a S***. Domino is stunning. Largo is a fun villian. Who doesn't love underwater fight scenes?
10. FYEO - Moore's grittiest performance and I liked the story even though it was convoluted. Kristatos is so much fun, but Moore is aging

11. Dr. No - The one that started it all, but it feels weak compared to FRWL and Goldfinger
12. Octopussy - Moore's age was really showing here but I dig Bond in India and the Cold War vibe in Germany

Mixed-Bag (order changes daily)

13. Moonraker - My favorite Bond as a kid, but then I grew up

14  Live and Let Die - Would probably replace TSWLM if it weren't so incredibly campy. Moore is very raw. Jane Seymour as Solitaire melts my pants every time.
15. Quantum of Solace - This one goes up the list everytime I watch it because it is so raw but I really can't get over Marc Forster's quick-cam editing and story is flimsy.

16. License to Kill - This is kind of just the Dalton version of QOS above. So raw, but nothing like its predecessor

17. (tie) The World Is Not Enough - I actually liked the storyline but Christmas Jones is a downer. Still this was the first Bond I saw in theaters and I loved it.

17. (tie) You Only Live Twice - Connery really dials in the acting but the story is a lot of fun, the music is excellent, and Bond in Japan is great.

Pretty Bad

19. MWTGG - Moore and Chistopher Lee have solid performances but my mind wanders too much when I watch this.

20. Tommorrow Never Dies - Too many machine guns.

21. AVTAK - Chistopher Walken as an epic villian. Little else. Moore is ancient.

Putrid

22. Diamonds are Forever - What a buzzkill after OHMSS. Also set the stage for the campy Moore era.
23. Die Another Day - So bad I forgot the name of the movie when I made this list with cousin a few years ago. All I remembered was "The shitty Brosnan one". He couldn't remember either and we are both huge Bond fans

The middle part of this list is liable to change at any time.

Having just watched Thunderball for the first time in an age I'm surprised to see that nearer the top of most people's lists than the bottom... and also surprised to see Tomorrow Never Dies so near the bottom. Yes, the ending is weak however the first hour is pretty flawless, and the villain is very good, certainly of the time, and the remote control car sequence is beautiful...

I'd definitely have to agree with this sentiment.  Never have understood all the love for Thunderball.  Now, it's better than its counterpart, Never Say Never Again, but then again, a lot of things are.  Really, in my mind, the only thing that Thunderball really has going for it is Claudine Auger.

I had to first put the movies of each actor in order of preference, then whittle it amongst it overall.  Here is what I came up with for myself.

1. Licence To Kill
2. Casino Royale
3. Octopussy
4. Goldfinger
5. The Living Daylights
6. Then Spy Who Loved Me
7. GoldenEye
8. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
9. Skyfall
10. You Only Live Twice
11. From Russia With Love
12. Live And Let Die
13. Tomorrow Never Dies
14. The World Is Not Enough
15. Quantum of Solace
16. Thunderball
17. Moonraker
18. For Your Eyes Only
19. Dr. No
20. The Man With The Golden Gun
21. A View To A Kill
22. Diamonds Are Forever
23. Die Another Day

The Living Daylights is the better of Dalton's 2 in my opinion. That said, the pacing is odd as it goes from a Cold War-thriller to a drug-smuggling operation. The PTS is one of the series' best though (after Casino Royale and From Russia with Love).

Not a full overhaul of the list, but I've recently revisited some of the lower ranked films in my book, and had a couple of changes of heart.

Not as bad as I remember: YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and TOMORROW NEVER DIES
Not great but not disastrous: THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and OCTOPUSSY
Still rock bottom: DIE ANOTHER DAY and A VIEW TO A KILL

Full ranking to come.

Surprised myself quite a bit here, particularly in the middle rankings, and fighting over the top three. This is about right currently though:

  1. Skyfall
  2. Casino Royale
  3. From Russia With Love
  4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
  5. Goldeneye
  6. Moonraker
  7. Thunderball

  13. Dr No
  14. The Living Daylights
  15. The Man With the Golden Gun
  16. Licence to Kill
  17. Diamonds Are Forever
  18. Live and Let Die
  19. For Your Eyes Only
  20. Octopussy

I was surprised at myself that YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE fared so well last time I did my list. Good to see I'm not the only one.

It is actually really good until the volcano craziness and even then it's fine. There are some excellent scenes before that - meeting Henderson, the fight in Osato's office, meeting Osato, meeting Tiger, the car chase, Little Nellie. This is all excellent stuff. 1967 Tokyo looks futuristic too and the special effects were very good for the time.

All of the Connery films were escalating into something greater. This is true with From Russia With Love following Doctor No. There's a similar grounded tone, but it's all expanded upon. I think this is best exemplified with the ending sequences - the helicopter swooping and the boat chase. Goldfinger was something of a tonal change, but it was also a template for spectacle and glamour. The plot is ambitious to say the least, however it's all focused on Fort Knox. Thunderball's plot threatens the world. So does YOLT's, but it's taking place in outer space, and the methods are even more bold. DAF took this even further, and we all know that's not to everyone's taste. But I digress. There's a lot to like about YOLT.

With my re-watch session finishing the first 20 films (plus NSNA), I thought it would be interesting to do a new ranking before entering "Phase Two" a.k.a. the Craig era.

When I started re-evaluating my opinion on the films I feared that overfamiliarity with some of them would be a disadvantage for them.  That did not happen to be the case.

Neither do I think that my long abstinence from watching the films (amost three years) was the deciding factor that changed my views on them.  I believe it was the chronological order, seeing the films as they were conceptualized and released, that made me appreciate EON actually trying to give the formula a different spin with every new film, sometimes enhancing its impact, sometimes diminishing it.

In comparison with my last ranking in May 2012 (boy, does time fly) - this is what so far has changed for me:

21.  NSNA (no change, still at the bottom of my list of favorites)

20.  TWINE (huge drop from no. 3, while TND rises just as extremely from here)

19.  DAF (another huge drop from number 5, with GE shooting up into the top 10 - man, what was I thinking in 2012? )

18.  FYEO (no change)

17.  DAD (dropping from no. 12, and GF rising into the top 10 again - hmmm)

16.  TB (no change)

15.  LTK (drastic drop from no. 6, and OP rising up, up, up)

14.  AVTAK (dropping slightly from no. 10, with LALD rising again)

13.  DN (no change)

12. YOLT (dropping only one place from no. 11)

11. MR (dropping from no. 9)

10. TMWTGG (dropping from no. 7)

9.  GE (rising a lot, from no. 19)

8.  GF (rising also a lot, from no. 17)

7.  OP (rising... man, if something rises in this current list, it really does rise, from no. 15)

6.  LALD (also really rising, from no. 14)

5.  TND (biggest riser, from no. 20)

4.  TLD (dropping from no. 2)

3. OHMSS (rising from no. 8)

2.  FRWL (rising from no.4)

1. TSWLM (no change, still my absolute favorite - and not only because of my extreme nostalgia for it)

So, not that it would interest anybody else but me - but I´m waiting for an important call before I can go back to work, also I´m quite lazy right now - what has happened because of my re-watch session?

Only five of my all-time favorites have remained in the top 10 (TSWLM, FRWL, OHMSS, TLD, TMWTGG) with two of them dropping like flies (TWINE and DAF) and LTK also losing its appeal to me.  Instead, unloved films like TND, LALD and OP gaining the most from my re-watching them.

These three could be considered as absolutely light-weight entries, so maybe I was starving for more fun?  Then again, DAF dropped so badly, and that one is even more light-weight, isn´t it?

Maybe TND, LALD and OP have gained so much ground with me because they are pretty unprentious, pure entertainment with strong turns by their leads - yet, they have interesting plot-elements and visuals that set them apart.

And the big dropper TWINE might have suffered from my enjoying its predecessor so much that it showed its many flaws too clearly, whereas before I watched TWINE not in context but simply for its attempt at a more serious story.  And as I said in my review, failing where SKYFALL succeeded did not help TWINE at all.

I´m curious how the re-watching of the Craig era will effect my final ranking.  Right now I would place all Craig-Bonds in the top ten, which means that three entries there would drop out of it.  This is how I view the Craig era now:

3. CR

2. QOS

1. SF

But do I really prefer all of them to my current top 10?  Or will a repeated viewing of these three films jumble the others around?

Oh, the excitement...
