Okay, here's my newly updated ranking:

24. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
Poorly written, directed and paced. Connery looks bored. Plus they put Blofeld IN A DRESS!

23. DIE ANOTHER DAY
It's an explosion in a cringe factory. With extra smug.

22. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
Dull, overrated, poorly paced. Not enough Christopher Lee. Too much Britt Ekland. And Sheriff JW Pepper.

21. DR. NO
Iconic stuff from Connery but I find it largely boring.

20. LIVE AND LET DIE
Brilliant soundtrack & theme. Would make a good Shaft thriller, but it ain't a Bond movie.

19. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
Flashes of goodness mired by a tone that doesn't fit Roger Moore, a poor villain & love interest, and dodgy pacing. And we must never speak of the PTS.

18. TOMORROW NEVER DIES
Overrated. Brosnan on autopilot. A crap villain. Moments of greatness but it's a poor man's TSWLM.

17. NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN
Connery is brilliant but the rest is dodgy and corny. Awful soundtrack. And Small-Fawcett.

16. A VIEW TO A KILL
I love it, but it's a poorly made film. Moore is too old & the second half is very bland & cheesy.

15. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
First half is a great Cold War thriller, second half a jumbled mess. Dalton still bedding in, but weak love interest & villains.

14. QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Bond trying to be Bourne, and looking more like a brought-to-life IKEA catalogue. Distinctly average.

13. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
Great PTS, and then it's all downhill. Sophie Marceau is great, Robert Carlyle wasted. Could have been ballsy, opted safe for quippy.

12. LICENSE TO KILL
Very iffy first half gives way to a tight, exciting second. Not entirely a Bond film but Dalton is great, as are the love interest & villain.

11. THUNDERBALL
Classy, sexy, entertaining first half falls into a stodgy, dull second. Looks gorgeous, great story, Connery at his best, but not fully the sum of its parts.

10. MOONRAKER
Frequently daft and bonkers, but Moore is enjoying himself & the villain is exceptional.

9. GOLDFINGER
Iconic, classic, legendary... but hollow. It's all just too easy for Bond. A bit overrated IMO.

8. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
Oft-spoofed but a bit different and memorable, with the best Blofeld incarnation. Connery looks tired though.

7. OCTOPUSSY
I know it's not a great film, but it's ludicrous and mental and silly and utterly fun. Moore has never looked so comfortable.

6. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Connery's best. Intelligent, exciting, glamorous, cool. Set the bar.

5. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
Moore's best. Epic, thrilling, funny, just joyously Bond. Shame the villain is crap & love interest can't act.

4. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
Forget the fact Lazenby is a bit wooden, it's a terrific, classy story with a brave, moving conclusion.

3. CASINO ROYALE (2006)
Surely the definitive adaptation of Fleming, given a fresh sheen. Craig is immediately brilliant, superb action, moving story, gut punch ending. Excellent.

2. SKYFALL
Everything Casino Royale was, only with an extra, classy, 60's style Bond cherry on top. Exciting, funny, moving, iconic. It's almost the best yet.

1. GOLDENEYE
Nobody has done it better. Not yet.

I guess its a rite of passage to reply in this thread:

23. The Man With The Golden Gun
I love Maud Adams <3 but theres too much terrible in this film, Lee underused, Ekland and Herve horrible. Astro stunt ruined by whistle. Terrible theme song.

22. Moonraker
Offensively stupid. Shockingly clunky. Corinne and her death probably the best things in the film. Drax a tremendous bore. Chiles on valium. A pigeon does a double=take.

21. Die Another Day
The reason Bond needed restarting, Has some nice ideas, like the Ice hotel and the Bond-as-prisoner, but cringeworthy CGI and awful characters. The Batman And Robin of the franchise. Nearly killed it stone dead.

20. Diamonds Are Forever
Badly paced, Connery couldn't care any less, unfunny. Jill St John awful. Elevator fight best scene.

19. Octopussy
Not truly terrible, but I never feel the need to re-watch it. Has some good scenes and again, Maud Adams. Yum. Berkoff is Russian general as Nazi Dalek.

18. The World Is Not Enough
Angry at misfire. Marceau is excellent. Richards worst Bond Girl ever. All the ingredients are there, but the cake was ruined. Could have been Brosnans finest hour.

17. Tomorrow Never Dies
Watchable, shorter runtime helps it. Martial arts is great. No one is better at "running-in-a-suit-with-gun" than Brosnan. Carpark and soundproof room fight are great.

16. The Living Daylights
I really *want* to like this more, but I always find it sags too much during the second/third act. I like D'abo and the late 80s synth score. Awesome kitchen fight and fight on the plane rigging. Great theme song and first half hour.

15. For Your Eyes Only
Nicely dramatic, too confused about whether its straight or funny, take out most of the "humour" and it'd be better. Moore is great. Melinas moustache, not so much. Pre titles and "Rocky outtakes score" awful.

14. A View To A Kill
A bad film, but I love it. Golden Gate scene is awesome. Walken completely watchable and brilliant, Jones is great too. Hilariously bad old man rumble in Staceys house. Blank faced Roberts during entire film. Best theme song.

13. Thunderball
Domino <3

12. Goldfinger
I like all the iconic-ness and I realise the films importance at laying out "the blueprint" but Bond spends most of the film walking round with his hands in his pockets, middle sags big time, First and Third act are great.

11. Live And Let Die
Moore instantly comfortable as Bond. Solitaire gorgeous. Kotto is great. Let down by Kanangas death. Fake funeral is genius. WOrlds longest speedboat chase. Moore glues the bad together and rises above it.

10. Licence to Kill
A breath of fresh air. Dalton headbutting his way to victory. Davi is terrifying. Head explosion FTW. Leiter unbearably cheesy. Great PTS and action. Slows down to a crawl about an hour in.
An important film, I can see why some fans hate it though,

9. You Only Live Twice
*My* Goldfinger, I love its scenery, characters, fight scenes, action, music, locations. It keeps moving, always something to look at, Akis death still sad after all these years. Pleasence Blofeld is great.
Special mention to terrified cat.

8. Quantum Of Solace
Fast, brutal and pacey. Kurylenko maybe my favourite girl. Bond gets his act together and mixes business with vengeance. Artertons death shatteringly brutal. Hotel finale great. Feels like a welcome rest-stop in between the grandeur of the films bookmarking it.

7. Goldeneye
Bond rescued. The series returns with the loudest bang. Brosnan having the time of his life. Janssen gorgeous. Scorupco and her cardigan likeable. Fantastic PTS, maybe the best ever.
I honestly think some elements of the film have dated *worse* than many older films, but I think it rises above those issues and is *always* rewatchable.
Music during Ferrari chase the worst music of all time.

6. Dr. No
Ahead of its time. Good run length. Three insanely beautiful women. Good music. Dark violence. Still watchable 50 years on. Almost flawless

5. Skyfall
Breathtaking shot, masterfully directed. A story that takes 007 where he's never been but needs to go. Marlowe is jaw dropping in many ways. Not a single bad performance. Jardem terrifying. Feels shorter than its runtime. Lighting and action direction the best in the series. Liberally borrows sound and style from Chris Nolan's movies, but good creators steal from the best.
A bit contrived in its final scene, almost cheesy. Everything else raises the bar. Already impatient for where we're going next.

4. On Her Majestys Secret Service
AWESOME fist fights, fast editing gives film a dream-like sense. Lazenby uppercutting guys to the moon. Rigg is awesome. Savalas stylish. Hugely important film in the series. Only let down by a super slow middle section, the way-too-60s "indoctrination" of the girls and waaay too much obvious ADR.
Always moving finale, she'll duck *this* time, I'm sure of it.

3. The Spy Who Loved Me
Moores finest hour. Bond in full mission mode, great action. Espirit is cool. Bach is gorgeous. Jaws used properly. Lavishly shot. Pyramids/ruins part is visually awesome. Moore's Bond steps his presence up a gear.
Some terrible audio cues (Broken down van and final refrain of main song) the only letdowns. Still looks amazing after all these years. The most rewatchable film of the entire series.

2. Casino Royale
Batman Begins to DADs Batman And Robin. Took a franchise on the verge of total integrity collapse and showed, simply, that if you get a group of people who know what they're doing, give them a strong story and get your act together. You can create a new life, and a masterpiece, as long as you stay focused on your goal and dont kowtow to the whining "fans" and naysayers.
Casino Royale takes Bond into a world where his films can be taken outside of the "Bond filter" we have for our fave series, and into the realm of *actual* film competition.
CR isn't just a great "Bond film" it's a great film, period.

1. From Russia With Love
It probably isn't my first choice of a Bond movie to watch, but it's the only one I think has no flaws at all. I see it as pretty much perfect in direction, pace, action, story, character.
Grant fight one of the best screen fights ever. Connery dark and dangerous, Gypsy camp is great. Pedro ends his life with a performance and character that is immortal. Bianchi gorgeous. Klebb deliciously evil.
Awesome title sequence. Film looks incredible on BluRay.

So thats my entry. I'm sure you'll appreciate, that list list can slightly shift on a monthly basis (especially the top 5 and bottom 5) but the placing is *roughly* accurate.
Like answering the question of who's "my favourite Bond" I find this list crazy difficult to set in stone permanently.

And of course, this is only my opinion and I'm not expecting everyone to understand how GF and TB only *just* beat VTAK :D

Cheers for reading :)

Interesting opinion.

I find it the less good of all the saga. But you seems to consider it as good as Casino Royale or The Spy who loved me.

Very interesting ranking, kissarmy71. It's not often you see all of Craig's film's at the bottom and Moonraker right at the top! Shows that everyone sees something different in Bond - part of what makes the franchise so great.

New rankings based on seeing Skyfall and watching all of Bond 50 in order. I don't dislike any Bond film, but there's just some I like better than others. The top ten of mine could really interchange (well, really any of them could outside of the top five - it always depends on my mood but generally I prefer the more serious character driven films). It's hard to put them in one definitive order. Ties are ones that I enjoy equally at that level from a particular actor.

1. Skyfall / Casino Royale
2. From Russia With Love / Thunderball
3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
4. The Living Daylights
5. Octopussy / The Spy Who Loved Me
6. Goldfinger
7. GoldenEye / The World Is Not Enough
8. Dr. No
9. Quantum of Solace
10. Licence to Kill
11. Live and Let Die / Moonraker
12. The Man With The Golden Gun
13. Tomorrow Never Dies / Die Another Day
14. For Your Eyes Only
15. You Only Live Twice
16. A View To A Kill
17. Diamonds Are Forever

After finishing Bond 50 which was the first time I've watched all the films in order, I really felt like my bottom three were the weakest in the franchise. You Only Live Twice, for example, felt really lackluster sandwiched between the excellent Thunderball and the brilliant On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Die Another Day I enjoyed, probably because it had been so long since I last watched it and consider it even with Tomorrow Never Dies as far as being a pretty entertaining and "fun" Bond film. Even though For Your Eyes Only is perhaps the most down to earth of Roger's films, I've never particularly cared for it.

12. The Spy Who Loved Me
13. The World Is Not Enough
14. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
15. Octopussy
16. A View To A Kill
17. Never Say Never Again (It's a connery Bond movie, so I list it.)
18. Die Another Day
19. Diamonds Are Forever
20. The Man With The Golden Gun
21. Moonraker
22. Live And Let Die

For me, #1 & 2 are a virtual tie. Ultimately, I like them all, but some have too many moments that make you groan in disbelief (or disgust at such bad writing) - but I'd only say that the bottom 5 fit in that category.

Jeez, almost exactly 6 years later and my list isn't all that different. I do think I've warmed up (again) to a few at the bottom (Diamonds Are Forever for one, The Man With The Golden Gun for another). The one I was REALLY puzzled by was Goldfinger at #10. I'm not a big fan of that one. It's got a great reputation, but it's not all that good. Bond is a bit of a bumbler in that one, and he repeatedly gets captured, has to be rescued by other people, and then someone else saves the day at the end. Add to that the poor casting for Felix Leiter and the underwhelming settings and the movie is a real letdown. It's got a few famous lines and characters, but other than that it's near the bottom of the bunch, IMO. I don't know why I rated it as highly as I did in 2006.

So here's the updated list circa 2012 including QOS and Skyfall:

1. Licence To Kill
2. Dr. No
3. From Russia With Love
4. Thunderball
5. Skyfall
6. Casino Royale
7. The Living Daylights
8. For Your Eyes Only

Last October, I watched every official Bond movie for the first time. The following list is the result of my 'Bondathon':

23. Diamonds are Forever
Terrible, terrible, terrible. It isn't 'so bad it's good' it's 'so bad it's really, really bad'. The worst portrayal of Blofeld by far, a bored Sean Connery, lazy action, terrible henchmen and a level of camp that is the highest in the official franchise makes this the worst movie of the franchise. I like the theme song and the movie isn't boring, but those are the only nice things I can say about Diamonds are Forever.

22. Moonraker
Booooring. I don't care if James Bond goes into space, the movie is just very boring. There are a couple of cool moments here and there though, like the boat chase and the opening scene. But Jaws falling in love? Really?

21. The World is not Enough
Bland and mean-spirited. Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist is one of the worst Bondgirls ever and Pierce Brosnan doesn't seem to have a good time in this one. TWINE is definitely one of the blandest in the franchise.

20. Die Another Day
Ridiculous, but with a couple of redeeming scenes. The editing is awkward, the villain is annoying, and there's an ice palace? Is this Batman & Robin (1997) or a James Bond movie? However, it does have a couple things that make it at least somewhat enjoyable. I liked the first half hour of the movie (before the worst Bondgirl ever shows up), I liked the swordfight and I liked the car chase. The rest of the movie is, admittedly, pretty terrible though.

19. A View To A Kill
Kind of boring and stupid. The Bondgirls can't act, Roger Moore is REALLY too old for the role at this point and the action is lame. Even Christopher Walken as a James Bond villain isn't nearly as exciting as it sounds. And what was up with the California Girls song?

18. Live and Let Die
Boring. It has my favorite Bond theme song, but the movie itself is kind of boring and annoying. I don't have much to say about this one, I just didn't enjoy it. Jane Seymour is beautiful though.

<Big Gap>

17. Quantum of Solace
One of the blandest Bond movies along with The World is Not Enough. This movie is poorly shot, poorly edited and poorly directed.

16. Licence to Kill
Ehm...I'm not a big fan of this one? There's no real plot, I hated the role Q gets, I didn't like the 'love triangle' and the movie was just...weird. I dunno, maybe it was Benicio del Toro. The last action setpiece is awesome though. It's not terrible, but it's just a little below average for me.

15. Thunderball
Way too long and a little boring as a result, but still a pretty enjoyable movie. The action is a little lame and there is a lot of gimmicky stuff to be found here (the jetpack, the underwater scenes). Luciana is one of the most attractive Bondgirls out there though, and Sean Connery gives his last fun performance.

14. Octopussy
Meh, it's okay. I really liked the villains and I liked the action. It certainly has some boring moments, but as a whole, it is a pretty entertaining movie.

13. The Man with the Golden Gun
Yes, it is terrible. Yes, it is THAT high on my list. Why? Because it is so bad it's good. Unlike Diamonds are Forever, which was painful to sit through, TMWTGG is a fun ride. But I completely acknowledge that in terms of quality, this is probably the worst James Bond movie. It is ridiculous, over-the-top and makes no sense, but I can't help it: I really, really enjoy it.

12. You Only Live Twice
Another guilty pleasure. The funny thing about this movie is that Sean Connery gives his worst performance by far in this movie. He looks bored and uncomfortable. So Sean Connery is the weakest part of this movie, but the rest of the movie is fun.

11. For Your Eyes Only
Roger Moore's second best. Roger Moore gives his best performance in this one.

10. The Living Daylights
The more I think about this one, the more I like it. Much better than Licence to Kill, imho.

9. Casino Royale
Yeeaaah. I don't like it as much as most people. It's still great, but I was not a fan of the action and I didn't like the exits of the villains. The scenes inside the casino are by far the best parts of the movie.

8. Tomorrow Never Dies
Another yeeaaah. I really like this one, I don't know why it gets so much hate. I love Elliot Carver, I love the fact that they repeat the Bond theme a lot, the action is great, the Bondgirl is great, Brosnan is great, this movie is just great. It isn't perfect; Teri Hatcher is terrible and kind of pointless and the plot doesn't make a lot of sense, but I thought this was almost an homage to the classic Connery movies. Y'know, two parties fight in a war and a third party profits (like described in Dr. No and From Russia With Love)? Almost as good as GoldenEye imho.

7. The Spy Who Loved Me
Best Moore movie by far.

6. GoldenEye
Definitely one of the most entertaining Bond movies. I really didn't like Natalya Simonova and Alan Cumming as an over-the-top Russian hacker, though.

5. Dr. No
A classic, although it does feel a little cheap. It was a very satisfying and entertaining watch.

4, From Russia With Love
Maybe a little more boring than Dr. No, but in terms of quality it is much better.

3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
A brilliant movie with a mediocre James Bond. George Lazenby isn't great, but he isn't awful either. He's okay. He certainly is the worst of the Bonds. Telly Savalas is great as Blofeld and I loved the ending.

2. Goldfinger
Iconic in every way. Iconic villain, iconic lines, iconic henchman, iconic Bondgirl, iconic action.

1. Skyfall
Loved it, loved it, loved it. It isn't perfect and it may eventually drop on my list, but for now it is my favorite. It is fantastic.

Not yet.

Goldeneye # 1? wow...incomprehensible plot holes, that sauna scene...superman Bond...

Indeed, a surprising choice - but this thread is all about personal choices. And I love the fact that nobody has made this one for their top Bond film yet.

Maybe we should search for someone whose favorite Bond film is DAF or DAD!

1. Octopussy (Sure it's a little corny and over the top but I always found it to the the most fun)
2. Casino Royale (Craig makes a fantastic debut. Great reboot of the series on every level)
3. Skyfall (Craig brings even more depth to the roll than ever. Not only a great Bond movie but a great dramatic thriller)
4. Goldfinger (Connery's best)
5. For Your Eyes Only (Welcome return to a more serious spy movie after Moonraker)
6. Quantum of Solace (underrated IMO. A fun action filled entry. Craig great as always)
7. A View To A Kill (Not a great movie but a lot of fun)
8. Licence To Kill (Loved how it broke from the formula. Dalton great in this revenge flick. Probably the most underrated film in the series)
9. Tomorrow Never Dies (Brosnans most entertaining)
10. You Only Live Twice (Liked the Japanese locale and Pleasence made the best Blofield)
11. Goldeneye (Pretty Good debut for Brosnan, he just didn't really bring anything special to the roll)
12. The Man With The Golden Gun (Christopher Lee made this movie.Rest is just Ok)
13. The Living Daylights (Dalton was better than given credit for but the 3rd act in this film is weak)
14. Dr No (Connery is awesome in this first in the series. There were just better entries to come)
15. Live and Let Die ( Takes Moore little time to make role his own)
16. From Russia With Love (Great moments but slow in parts)
17. The Spy Who Loved Me (Also great moments but slow in parts)
18. Never Say Never Again ( A lot more fun than Thunderball IMO although movie never as good after Carrera's character is killed)
19.Moonraker (Entertaining but too far over the top)
20. Diamonds Are Forever (Connery's performance feels phoned in)
21. Thunderball (Most overrated in the series IMO. Dull characters and pace.)
22. Die Another Day (Another one that went too far over the top. Bad CGI really hurts the film)
23. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Didn't find Lazenby very charismatic. Some good fight scenes though)
24. The World Is Not Enough ( By far the most boring movie in the series)

Here´s my list... I enjoy them all (except DAD and MR) very much so this is very hard for me... but let´s try :)

1. OHMSS (very loyal to the book, the best Blofeld, character driven, nice pace and action... ok, Lazenby is a bit wooden, but despite that a masterpiece)

2. FRWL (Connery at his best, a great spy thriller, a true classic, loyal to the book)

3. SF (wow, a modern day classic, Craig at the top of his game, great in all ways but jus´t cant beat the top 2)

4. CR (I love it, I love it, Craig IS James Bond from the very start)

5. FYEO (Yeah, has it´s flaws but is my favorite of the Moore-era, a good old espionage thriller and Melina...yummy)

6. DN (The film that started it all, a great and entertaining movie)

7. GF (When I was a kid I used to watch this all the time along TB, a timeless classic)

8. TSWLM (The second best of Rog´s, hugely entertaining, always a joy to watch)

9. TLD (Dalton´s finest, I liked this direction back in the days when I saw it the first time... espionage!)

10. LALD (A childhood favorite, a definition of entertainment, the best theme song, I love this film!)

11. TB (Entertaining film with a good cast, another childhood favorite, Domino, the last good Connery-film)

12. LTK (Hard edged Bond on a revenge... a different but good Bond film, has grown on me during the years)

13. GE (The best of Brosnans, first one I saw on theatre, this one saved the franchise)

14. YOLT (A bored Connery, the first OTT film in the series, Pleasence was campy... a mediocre film)

15. QOS (Hard edged Bond again, better than its reputation but the worst of Craig-era... stupid editing and pace!!)

16. OP (Very entertaining but what´s with the Tarzan yell? It almost ruins the whole film!)

17. TWINE (Mediocre? Yes, but the second best of Brosnans. Denise Richards is just bad, I love Sophie Marceau... could´ve been much better)

18. TMWTGG (Sir Christopher Lee makes this one better than its reputation... if I want entertainment I watch this because sometimes very bad can be actually very good... and I like the Lulu song though Alice Cooper could´ve been much better!)

19. TND (Very boring film, Pryce and Hatcher are bad, dr Kaufman was funny)

20. DAF (Pure comedy and works well in that territory but as a Bond film it´s just a waste of time. Great theme song!)

21. AVTAK (Chris Walken is great. An old fart is running around the world and is trying to stop the Silicon Valley disaster... this is just bad)

22. MR (Stupid film. Drax is great and the dog chase works well but the rest of the film is just pure...)

23. DAD (I hate this film. Had some good ideas but went so far to the universe and turned out to be a grand mess. Hopefully this film is the last OTT stupido adventure in the series... pure crap)

My ordering tends to change every time I watch one, but here's my current version of my list:

1. Goldfinger: Iconic classic. Has a bit of everything that makes Bond great, and does it all incredibly well.
2. Goldeneye: Outstanding action, quality plot, good characters. Only gripe is the inconsistent musical score. Sometimes it’s terrific, sometimes its random noise that's inappropriate for what's occurring onscreen.
3. Casino Royale (2006): Magnificent. A perfect Launchpad for the new continuity. Terrific performances by Dench, Craig, and others. It was refreshing to actually feel tension and danger in the series again, after the nigh-invincibility of the Brosnan era.
4. From Russia With Love: Terrific espionage flick.
5. You Only Live Twice: The definitive over the top Bond movie. Absurd, but it pulls it off masterfully. My favorite version of Blofeld, and my all around favorite Bond villain. Ninjas, carnivorous fish, carnivorous spacecraft, tiny helicopters, rocket guns – it has it all. Only downside is Connery. He’s well past caring by this point.
6. Tomorrow Never Dies: Always had a soft spot for this, my very first Bond movie. Michelle Yeoh is the ultimate non-passive Bond girl. The plot's a delightful spin on the old YOLT/TSWLM style, taking modern media to the silliest of extremes. Great chase scenes in this one.
7. The Living Daylights: A great cold war story, mixed with just the right amount of action and gadgetry. Phenomenal final score by John Barry. The only thing that brings it down for me is Dalton. I hate to say it, but I never liked him as Bond. He does a fine job with the serious aspects of the role, and looks competent in the action scenes. But to me, the man just didn't have any of the charm or charisma the role needs. The one-liners sound too forced.
8. Licence to Kill: To me, this is the revenge for Tracy movie we always deserved, with Felix and his wife as proxies. Dark and gritty, this is a very underrated and overlooked entry. Sanchez is a fun villain, and the relationships between Bond, M, Felix, Q, and Monneypenny are integral. "And this time, it's personal.", indeed. Some subpar acting from the Bond girls "I love James. So much.", some standout silly moments (Ninjas worked well in YOLT, but not here), and Felix's strangely happy demeanor at the end bring it down, just a bit.
9. Thunderball: Classic. Connery's Bond was at his coolest here. SPECTRE really came into their own in this one. The underwater fight at the end drags too much for my liking, though.
10. Skyfall: A solid character driven entry. Gorgeous cinematography, well filmed action scenes, good acting. I like the concepts it explores (Bond's age, relevance in a tech-driven era, etc.) but it doesn't seem to bring them all together as well as I'd have liked. Silva just didn't click with me like he did with others, though. Seems to me that Bardem tried too hard to emulate Heath Ledger's Joker and Hopkins' Hannibal, rather than try something of his own.
11. The World is Not Enough: The pacing is weird, and Denise Richard's performance is the worst in the entire series. Everything else is well handled. Touching farewell to Q, unintentional as it may have been.
12. Quantum of Solace: Vastly underrated. Craig and Dench steal the show once again. The plot is one of my favorites. Seizing control of a country's water supply yields tremendous power. That's how world domination would really work. No death satellites and the like. Just stealthy manipulation of the status quo. Still, the writer's strike prevented a lot from being fleshed out. Feels incomplete in places. And the editing? Horrendous. Worst I've ever seen in a big budget wide release.
13. For Your Eyes Only: Moore's only semi-serious entry. Great use of locales, visceral action, simple and effective espionage plot. Bibi is irritation incarnate.
14. The Spy Who Loved Me: Never understood the long-lasting appeal of this one. Don't get me wrong - the PTS and the car chase are outstanding. Jaws is a classic henchman. But it could have been so much more than a YOLT rehash with detente sprinkled in. Agent XXX is set up to be Bond's equal, but never really gets to demonstrate her skills. She falls into the standard damsel in distress role more often than not. Stromberg's a very bland villain. And the music really rubs me the wrong way. It just seems dissonant. All in all, this is a very average Bond movie for me.
15. Dr. No: I always have a hard time ranking this one. I like it, I really do. But at the same time, if this wasn't the first movie, I'd probably hate it. It does a great job of establishing Bond, his world, and almost all the associated tropes and clichés. But it doesn't do much particularly well, when compared to the rest of the series. The action is comparatively poor, the pacing slow. I suppose the best summary I can give is that it's a terrific start to the series, but it's grown considerably since then.
16. Die Another Day: I'm probably giving the film makers too much credit, but I always saw this one in a different light. It's a microcosm of the entire franchise. What begins as a semi-serious espionage story, wrapped in style, quickly devolves to pun-spewing sci-fi silliness that's trying too hard to emulate the latest crazes (CGI, bullet time slow motion), rather than seeking to *be* what others emulate, as Bond should be. I love all the homages to the previous movies. The first half of the movie is actually pretty good. Things start to go downhill when Jinx shows up, and the movie completely falls apart once the action moves to Iceland. Still, there’s some quality action in there. Besides the parasurfing, of course. The CGI is some of the worst I've seen in a big budget release, even for its time. Intentional or otherwise, there's a bit of everything Bond ever was in here, both good and bad. And I'd like to think that some of the bad was done with affection, rather than honest intent at changing things up. At best, it’s a celebration of Bond that overindulges. At worst, it's the Moonraker of the 21st century.
17. On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Yes, I did just rank this below Die Another Day. Hate to say it, but this one never, ever worked for me. I love the ideas in this movie - a more humane look at Bond and Blofeld, Bond finally finding love and tragically losing her. I love that Blofeld wants amnesty instead of the usual ransom. Both he and Bond are looking for ways out of their lifestyles, but neither can escape their seemingly predestined confrontations. The cinematography is great, the action scenes mostly well filmed, and John Barry’s soundtrack is one of the best. So what’s not to like? Lazenby’s performance is terrible. Nothing he says or does ever come across as natural. For a supposedly serious Bond movie, a campy wooden Bond really hurts things. Blofeld’s mind control is Moore era levels of absurd, and really takes me out of things. But more than anything else, it’s the pacing and structure of the movie that kills it for me. Other than two poorly edited fist fights, most of the action takes place during the last 50 minutes of the movie. It’s overwhelming. Worse, the previous 90 minutes are largely uneventful. The romance between Bond and Tracy seems incredibly forced. As much as I like the song, the montage was just too cheesy for me to take seriously. Both the safe cracking sequence and the Piz Gloria infiltration are glacial and largely uninteresting. There’s never a feeling of suspense or danger until Bond gets captured. And really, he does next to nothing in the way of actual espionage work until then. For Bond’s big love story, his antics with the angels of death really feel out of place. Still, everything from the discovery Blofeld’s plan to the formula-breaking ending are very well done. Great concept, poor execution.
18. Moonraker: Silly and stupid, but I enjoy this colossal shark-jump in the same way I do Rocky IV. The terrestrial action is quite good. Drax is a great villain – probably the most evil one Bond has ever faced. A lot of this movie insults the audience’s intelligence. As such, I remember to leave my brain behind before every viewing. It’s the only way to enjoy it.
* Never Say Never Again: Thunderball. but worse. Some interesting bits here and there. The videogame and urine-weaponization are baffling choices, yet entertaining. Dealing with an older Bond is a great idea, but they never went anywhere with it. Poor music. Uninspired action. Everything looks cheap. A better sendoff for Connery than DAF, but barely.
19. Diamonds Are Forever: Lackluster. Connery’s only in it for the money, but still manages to elevate the proceedings in the scenes where he isn’t bored out of his mind. Should have been a proper revenge story for Tracy. Horrible Blofeld. However, if the villain were a different character, I may have liked him. I like the idea of assuming a recluse’s identity. The satellite laser test in China is the most unintentionally funny moment in the entire series. Wintt and Kidd are great, easily the highlight of the film. This was a big step in the wrong direction – one the series would continue on for the better part of two decades, minus one or two detours.
20. A View To A Kill: Catchy theme tune and score. Awesome performance by Chris Walken. Zorin is one of Bond’s best villains. He deserved to be in a better movie. The PTS is okay. The Beachboys music didn’t really bug me. If it happened to any Bond other than Moore, I’d have taken exception. The Paris chase scene wasn’t half bad. The blimp stuff is silly, but memorable. The rest is just a mix of forgettable sequences or downright bad ones. The Bond girl is really irritating. The comic relief with the police goes on far too long. Moore seems exhausted – he probably should have called it quits a movie or two earlier.
21. Live and Let Die: An awkward product of its time. I don’t like the supernatural elements in this one. Largely unimpressive locales and sets. Mediocre action. Kananga and his henchmen are pretty good, but the evil plan is probably the worst in the series. At least Sanchez had a realistic endgame, based on the tools at his disposal. But with political control of a small country, a large criminal network in the US, a woman who can literally see the future, and an honest to goodness immortal, Kananga set his sights far too low with his “give drugs away for free” plot. Sherrif Pepper and company derail what would have been a decent chase scene.
22. Octopussy: There’s some really good action in this one. General Orlof’s plan is one of the best in the series. I love Q’s more active role. But this one commits the gravest of sins for a Bond movie. To me, no matter how bad a situation he’s in (Casino Royale’s torture scene, for instance), Bond should always retain a sense of dignity. Tarzan yells while comically evading local wildlife, dressing up in a gorilla suit… and yes, defusing a nuclear device in full clown makeup? Disgraceful. Bond is to be laughed with, not at. I can tolerate the ridiculous nature of some of Moore’s movies, but I have no patience for Bond being the subject of ridicule.
23. The Man With The Golden Gun: Nothing. There is absolutely nothing good that I can say about this one. There isn’t a single scene, a single aspect that was handled remotely competently. Christopher Lee is a great actor – his talents are utterly wasted here. The plot it bloated, the humor isn’t funny, the action is minimal and underwhelming. The only decent stunt is ruined with a cartoon sound effect, as well as the return of Sheriff Pepper. It’s an unpleasant experience, from the blue-tinted gunbarrel dots to the whiny reprise of the awful theme song over the end credits. The real tragedy is that it could have been one of the best. The world’s greatest assassin is hunting Bond in a globe-trotting game of cat and mouse. If they’d stuck to that and left the death carnival, third nipple, little person henchman, loudmouthed sidekick, and solar energy powered laser gun stuff out, this would have been great. I really hope EON recycles that concept before retreading Goldfinger or YOLT for the umpteenth times.
* Casino Royale (1967): I’ve seen many awful movies in my life – and usually enjoy riffing on them. But this? This is one of the most soul-crushingly unfunny comedies I’ve ever seen in my life, and on my shortlist of worst overall movies I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched Birdemic three times, but couldn’t bring myself to finish this once!

It's really really hard to pick. Unscientifically ranked by quality-as-a-film vs quality-as-a-Bond-film vs entertainment-value.

1- From Russia With Love
2- Goldfinger
3- Casino Royale
3- The Spy Who Loved Me
5- On Her Majesty's Secret Service (would place a lot higher if it weren't for Lazenby; not that he's bad, but he is the worst thing about it)
6- SkyFall
7- Dr No
8- You Only Live Twice
9- GoldenEye
10- Thunderball
11- Quantum of Solace
12- Tomorrow Never Dies
12- The World Is Not Enough
14- For Your Eyes Only
15- Live And Let Die
15- The Man With The Golden Gun
17- The Living Daylights
18- Octopussy
19- Licence To Kill
20- Die Another Day
21- Diamonds Are Forever
22- A View To A Kill
22- Moonraker

The ones I will defend and/or happily watch again and again (in no particular order)

From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Casino Royale, The Spy Who Loved Me, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, SkyFall, Dr No, You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, Quantum of Solace, For Your Eyes Only, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Living Daylights, The World Is Not Enough
