We got one for sound editing! Hot Damn!
I just involuntarily shouted out sitting here at home at 3.20am in the UK. I was waiting for Mark Wahlberg to say "Argo". Amazing.

Fantastic! James Bond has officially won it's first Oscar in 46 years.
Really sad to see it miss out for Cinematography. Skyfall is definitely the sexiest Bond film to date. Fingers crossed for best original song!

A Shirley Bassey appearance and an Oscar win. I guess that is as good as could be expected. Still, it's rather feeble for 50 years. What happened to the all-Bond actor appearance thing that was rumored?

That was never going to happen, the Academy President denied the rumour months ago, and the Producers issued another statement about two weeks back. We've also had denials from several Bond's that they had even been asked to appear (including Sean Connery's spokesperson, so it is not as if he refused to do it and they had to come up with another plan...it looks like this was always their plan.)
Having said that I can't understand why that video tribute (presented by Halle Berry of all people) was the best they could come up with...although Shirley Bassey did an amazing job with the theme.

I think Roger Deakins will come back for Bond 24 and have better luck winning

Great news, and regarding Best Original Song, about time! Well done Adele. Nice to know I've now got an Oscar winning/Golden Globe winning Bond theme downloaded and on CD.
It's a pity none of the classic John Barry themes were ever nominated though. For example, Sir Tim Rice always thought Diamonds Are Forever should have been - maybe there was an issue with the lyrics?
Still at least Dame Shirley Bassey got to belt out Goldfinger!
It's a bit like waiting for a bus - you wait 40 odd years for an Oscar, and then two come at once!

Deakins was robbed! Life of Pi was all post production CGI smoke and mirrors!
Very happy for Adele though, well deserved!

Best Song and Best Sound Editing.
The Song win was predictable, the Sound Editing was not. So... 2 for SKYFALL. Good. Deserved.
But really, this tribute...
A nice enough montage. But IMO Shirley Bassey performed only in a very mediocre way, undersinging so much (I know this is a trick of aging, out-of-breath performers, she´s saving it for the last note).
So... that´s all the Oscars want to honor James Bond with?
Pathetic. The cheesy FOR YOUR EYES ONLY number back then was more inventive. And Cubby getting the Thalberg Award at least was a real tribute. But this?
Frankly, the whole show was an embarassment IMO. I wanted to like MacFarlane but he really did not pull this off at all. I almost prefer the ill-fated Hathaway/Franco hosting. Heck, even William Shatner alone would have done it better.
And who timed this? 17 minutes for the opening monologue which was not nearly funny enough.
Even the bits for the other presenters were sub-par. Nothing funny at all.
Instead all of them just trying to be funny and failing big time. Awkward, awkward. Even Chris Rock was better at his Oscar stint.
And don´t get me started about Roger Deakins losing again. Or Thomas Newman losing again.
What a weird, weird show. Can the Oscars get any worse? Billy Crystal´s turn last year was bad (I loved his first two years back in the 90´s). But really - this show has always been mishandled in the last years.
The last really good Oscar show, IMO, was the last one which was hosted by Steve Martin alone. He really knows how to perform, to be funny, to be alert and quick with an improvisation.

what will it take for Deakin to win an Oscars..........the effect on james Bond tribute was not great could have been bigger and amazing if they had Sean Connery or Roger moore show up.......did Daniel Craig or the producer even come at all?

Wow! 2 Oscars in 49 years and we equaled that in one night. 1.1 Billion Dollars, 5 Oscar Nominations and 2 Wins. I never would have thought any if these things would happen in my wildest dreams.
I must admit I was thinking the same...
A very impressive year / event / result.

Poor Roger Deakins....
I wonder if the reason could be that a large number of the voters only see these movies on the dvd/blu rays they're sent.
I watched SF on blu ray last night and much of Deakins' work is lost on the small screen, since in the best cinematic traditions he relies heavily on the wide shot in key moments when other, less confident filmmakers would cut to the close.
For example, when we first meet Silva, exiting his elevator, it stays on wide shot throughout the whole of his 'Rat' story, as he approaches the tied up Bond. In the cinema i could see his facial expressions clearly from the start and really appreciate his performance. But on my tv (which is a respectable 42inch and very high spec, so it's not to blame) i could barely make out Silva's face until he was pretty close to the camera and much of his story had been told. Much of the detail of Bardem's work was lost.
That's just one example - this was a serious issue on many occasions. It's not a problem with Deakins' work, which is magnificent throughout the movie. But what it does mean is that unless you see it at the cinema you fail to fully appreciate his photography - the restraint of his wides that allow for the performances, rather than the performances being made in the edit via the cuts to-and-from close up etc.
And with most of these voters being busy industry workers, how many of them got to see SF at the cinema and how many rely on the free dvd/blu rays they're posted of these movies. Hence, is it a surprise that Deakins never wins?
A side note: i have to temper this theory with the fact that i haven't even seen Life of Pi and it may simply be an even better looking movie - reviews across the board did indeed praise it's exceptional use of 3D, even when the film itself was seen as good, but not great for the most part, so the really big surprise of the night was that it won Best Director.

Well I'm glad I stayed up this morning for the ceremony, a nice mixed bag of winners. 'Skyfall' did me proud with 2 Oscars, very pleased!
Echoing what you say, it took a while for the hosting to pick up speed but once it did it flowed well, even if the auto-cue was the star of the show with some wooden presenters handing out awards and simply reading lines.
Highlights for me:
Dissapointments for me:
Probably more but that's off my head. And I feel I should check out some of Daniel Day-Lewis's films with his 3rd Oscar win for Best Actor.
A star-studded night, and one of the smoother awards.

W(...)
- John Travolta's hair
- The 'Jaws' theme used to cut speeches short
I noticed that too and wondered if Travolta wears a toupee? I noticed there are some articles online that show his hair at different lengths within a short time period.
Its always funny watching peoples speeches get cut off.
Looks like we haven't seen the last of that little girl from the Oscars just yet, she's been cast as Annie in a Will Smith and Jay Z produced film. [1]
