Who knows. I'm not sure what the rights situation looks like with Indiana Jones films, and I suspect Disney doesn't have full control over it. It's telling that the press release doesn't mention the Indiana Jones franchise.
How many hands will they get on Indy?
Well, it does: it says they have the rights to it. But it also says they only really wanted Star Wars, pretty much; and apparently someone said that the situation with Paramount makes it tricky. It's beyond me.

Yeah, apparently Paramount has distribution rights to Indiana Jones, so Disney would have to negotiate a deal with Disney prior to starting up any new Indiana Jones features.Well, it does: it says they have the rights to it. I expect Episode VII will star Mark Hamill as an older, Ben Kenobi-type, version of Luke Skywalker.
Oh God! The horror of it all.

But does Fox not have the same thing with Star Wars? I can't see why one is harder than the other.

I don't think it does, at least not to the same extent. But does Fox not have the same thing with Star Wars? I can't see why one is harder than the other.

I have also read that they intend to release one every two or three years instead of the first reported 2015, 2016, 2017.
I am surprised by this news too. But I think it is a good idea. It is the only way for STAR WARS to continue and grow should George Lucas happened to catch the big UFO in the sky.
They need to find a director and producer that is just as passonate about STAR WARS as George Lucas. Glad to see he will be on as a "creative consultant".
The competition between Stars Wars and Star Trek continues.

Yeah, looking it it; is it that Paramount has a signed deal to distribute all Indy flicks, whereas Lucas negotiated with Fox for each film? I don't know- seems to be what some say.

With Star Wars, Lucas owned those films outright. So, Fox's distribution rights will probably lapse at some point and go to Disney.

Hey, maybe Spielberg will scrap 'Indiana Jones 5' and do something with 'Star Wars VII' with the creative team...?
No Indiana Jones 5! The fourth one was bad enough, can't they leave this stuff alone?? Jeezz..

No, seriously, this is pretty interesting, but in terms of those brought onto it to direct and write... it just has to be big names. You can't get away with Kersh and Marquand types anymore. They need to go a cut well above those brought into the Marvel franchise.
Star Wars has been buggered beyond belief IMO, so I don't really care anymore. If the new product turns out to be dismal, I won't care. As long as I can one day watch the un-tampered versions of the original trilogy, specifically Empire, I'll be happy.

I thought I would never live to see the day we would finally get 3 new movies after Return of the Jedi (1983).
Oh my God. Really? Is this supposed to be a clever attempt at Prequel bashing?

But I would want to see completely new arcs and characters for the next trilogy. Maybe they can hint at previous stories but re-booting or at least finding its own style would be the best decision IMO.

But the amount of critically and fan praised work out there after 'Return Of The Jedi' in the canon, book form, that introduces memorable new characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Solo children, along with old favourites, and new exciting stories of the New Jedi Order, the Yuuzan Vong war and other bits and bobs, there is so much to handled right.
I worry that the new film would be animated...but I think that's just recent worries over all that Lucas seems to do with Star Wars now, animate them for children. A live action, to the core of the orignal, film could be a lifeline for the Star Wars films to make us fall in love over again.

Half the existing movies are already bad and the saga is currently upset. I don't think the franchise has anything to lose.I mean when I first heard the news I was more shocked than anything. I don't want those movies to be really bad, because that would upset the entire Star Wars saga. If they get a really good director and they make these movies really good.. I will still probably go see this in theaters wearing my favorite Darth Vader shirt... xD

I think this is EXCELLENT news!! I was watching my nephew play the Force Unleashed video game and I thought "this is cooler than all three of the prequels! " , so, a Star Wars film with new blood at the helm with total geek-fanboy affection for the material could result in exactly what we wanted from SWE1,2(I liked SWE3 thanks to The Emperor). This could bw feakin awesome actually. I thought this thread would 20 pages by now. Anyway, I love this news because I'm so tired of Obama-Romney-Benghazi-current events negativity...
Bring on EPISODE VII !!!

Well for this I think it's either they bring Star Wars back to life, or they kill it. There's no middle-ground for this I think now, win or lose. Simple.
Got this from ComingSoon.net this morning which is slightly annoying with the vast amount of brilliant material out there they will now have to ignore in the LucasFilm canon...
It was announced that Disney has bought Lucasfilm and plans on creating an all new Star Wars trilogy with Episode VII hitting theaters in 2015, followed by a new movie every other year.
Once this was announced and we all calmed down a little, the typical fan fare of who would direct the new films, who would star in them, and what they would be about began. Many fans began to speculate that the new series would be an adaptation of Timothy Zahn's "Thrawn Trilogy," a series of novels considered canon by the people at Lucasfilm; however, it doesn't seem that way.
E! Online has learned from a source at Lucasfilm that the new films won't be an adaptation of the books. Their source says "it's an original story."
There's still hope though fellow Star Wars fans, as Disney plans on using all forms of media for their newly acquired purchase. As George Lucas said himself in the press release, "Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."
Sources even tell The Hollywood Reporter that one possibility being considered is an Avengers-style movie universe with not only Lucas' planned final trio of films but offshoot movies focusing on individual characters.
