On watching the film once for now, I was ready to keep an eye out for nods to previous Bond films as Mendes and Craig stated there would be...however I could only see two -
  • 'Goldfinger' with the obvious use of the classic Aston Martin
  • 'GoldenEye' with Q's reference to using an exploding pen

And I don't mean things that happen in this film that almost match other films, but an actualy sly wink to the film itself.

If anyone has seen the film and noted any, careful of big spoilers, or just mention the film, I'd love to see what others saw and try again in future viewings...!

Just seen Skyfall tonight, so I'm finally allowing myself into the spoilers forum. One word describes what I saw - epic.

Anyway, onto the 'nods'...and I think it's worth counting the moments that are obvious nods, along with the not-so-obvious.
Bond stepping on the Komodo Dragon to get out of the pit in the Shanghai casino - Bond stepping on the crocodiles to escape to safety in LALD.
The burly oriental guy who gets attacked by the Komodo Dragon - reminded me of Oddjob.
Bond to Q: 'You must be joking' - Connery's same line from GF.
The DB5 and the gadgets - obvious reference to the same car in GF. What I really liked about this 'nod' was when Bond and M drive out of the lock-up in Skyfall. It can't only be me that thought it looked remarkably like Connery driving the DB5 around Goldfinger's Swiss estate. The narrow lanes, the lighting - awesome!
The palm print coded PPK - similar gadget used on Bond's sniper rifle in LTK.
The older couple standing on the underground station platform that make the quip after Bond jumps onto the rear of the train - this sort of quip is found is almost every Moore Bond film.
Bond breaking the ice while standing on the lake towards the end of the film - reminded me of Brosnan's Bond breaking the ice and then diving under in DAD.

I'm sure that there are more, but my head is buzzing after seeing Skyfall earlier tonight! I look forward to reading what the rest of you think.

An obvious one (or not one at all) but Bond hands Tanner the bag of shrapnel and says "For her eyes only". It got a faint snigger from the audience though, so I'm happy to call it a reference.

Now, I was feeling quite pleased with myself earlier as I thought I'd found another subtle franchise nod, but it might purely be coincidental... The boxes of packed-up stuff in Skyfall Lodge are labelled with a company logo "BW" - Broccoli & Wilson?

Yes, I had forgotten the 'For Her Eyes Only' line. The BW logo on those boxes was bugging me when I was watching; I was trying to think of what it might reference and my line of thought was far more obscure. Broccoli and Wilson - how bleeding obvious!

I loved Whishaw's line asking Bond to return the equipment back intact - not a previous film homage but nice nod towards Desmond's Q and his relationship with Bond.

A fair few - Goldfinger with the car obviously, a 'For Your Eyes Only' line, a nod to GoldenEye with the pen, and of course M's new office is the old Bernard Lee/Robert Brown one. Probably more I'll pick up on second viewing.

I couldn't help feel a You Only Live Twice vibe from the 'Bond's death' opening too, plus the Far East setting.

I don't know if anyone else agrees but I did feel like Eve's costume in Bond's Macau hotel room was little homage to Helga Brandt?

The line "Be careful what you wish for" (Severine to Bond) is also from QoS (Greene to Camille).

I also noticed several uses of the turn of phrase "But of course [something]", which reminded me of Connery's infamous"I'm Plenty' "But of course you are!". Not sure it's a full-on reference.

I was wondering whether "But of course..." was being formed as one of Craig's Bond trademarks. It's used quite a lot. I think two or three times in SKYFALL.

"Sometimes, orphans make the best agents" - a reference to the Bond/Vesper introduction dialogue on the train?

Not forgetting at least one other use during his tenure, in QoS:

Greene: My friends call me Dominic...
Bond: But of course they do.

He actually says 'I'm sure they do' there.

Sorry for being pedantic, it's just QOS is right now on Sky Movies and I heard him say it fresh not half hour ago. :D

Ah, I stand corrected then! :D

See Vauxhall? I'm already unconsciously rewriting CraigBond's dialogues to put the "But of course..." trademark in... their plan works! ;)

Good obs.

Did we hear/see anything about stationary requests from 007, as he sent e-mails for them in 'Casino Royale' and asked Fields to help him find some in 'Quantum Of Solace'?

I can't think of any mention of stationery, sorry... On the other hand, a statonary request might be a nice homage to Moonraker ;)

Now I'm doubting my own memories... I could swear there's a "that's putting it mildly" line in Skyfall, said by Bond (?).

Am I making this up, or does anybody remember that line too?

Can't remember the exact line, but... "I know when a woman is living in fear." (Bond to Severine) - Vesper, maybe?

That's what I thought DC - a reference to Bond's previous encounters with fear and women, so he knows all there is about Severine and what she is hiding. Glad it wasn't just me who thought that.

God this film packs it all in.

'Stop touching your ear' - Bond to Eve in the casino was a nice nod to CR

There were also multiple 'Thankyou's' scattered throughout which really is a DC trade mark now.

The most polite Bond.

Oh yes! :D
But was it "stop touching" or "don't touch your ear"? I would have thought the latter.

Yeah me too :)
It's not to be nitpicky, but "stop touching" means Eve has low professional skills for the job, like the late Carter in CR, whereas "don't touch" doesn't mean anything about Eve, it's just a warning from Bond showing that he's wary since his ealier experience. I'd like the latter better, after all the other indicators do not point at a low-skilled Eve.

Second screening is in order might go tonight!

Enjoy!

Not certain if it was "stop touching", but maybe this is to become Bond's "trademark advice for new agents"...

Speaking of ears: Opening shot > CR "I'm all ears"? :D

No, seriously: the picture in the sniper scene "Woman with a fan" by Modigliani. It's a reference to DN, as it was stolen in 2010 and never found (like Goya's "Duke of Wellington" by Goya in DN).

The scorpion - the careful movements before throwing it off - similar to the spider scene in YOLT?

I found Severine's eye makeup reminding me of Eva Green but I'm not sure how intentional that would be.

Actually, I noticed this makeup even more during a recent ITW (the Royale Premiere, maybe?), and it mainly reminded of that:

The new Walther is a neat nod to both Dr No and Licence To Kill (with the Goldfinger radio transmitter) all in one.

I felt I saw hints of lots of these (the driving off in the car from Goldfinger for sure)

This isn't a Bond reference, but when Bond is in the Tube struggling to open the door Q and Bond are talking to each other using their ear pieces. Q says that Sliva intended to be caught all along.

In The Dark Knight shortly after The Joker escapes Commissioner Gordon says that The Joker intended to get caught.

Did they take some inspiration from The Dark Knight?

I'm not having a whinge about it by any means, it's just been playing on my mind.

I haven't seen the Batman films, so the references were lost on me, but apparently Mendes has acknowledged a "direct inspiration" from the Nolan films, according to this ITW: http://blogs.indiewi...-films-20121018
