A bigger budget does not equate to a better film or better box-office returns - so I don't care about that so much. Sometimes scaling things back forces the film-makers to be more creative.

And it's not that Skyfall looks or sounds cheap! Skyfall will make a healthy profit and personally I'd rather see a stellar meager budget Bond than a megabucks braindead [censored].

To compare Skyfalls final takings to the other Bond films I have found this chart, adjusted for inflation, that shows where each Bond film stands

The actuals are in and it's slightly up on the $77.7m to $80.6m. So even better, believe it or not.

http://www.screendai...5048277.article

Bond is back with a vengeance: Skyfall opens on $80.6m

UPDATE: Sony Pictures and MGM’s 23rd entry in the James Bond pantheon delivered an astonishing result as it opened top in all 25 markets, seven of them through Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) markets and the remainder through MGM licensees.

Interesting table.

This is slightly off topic but can anyone explain the big dip after Thunderball and the relatively poor performance of TMWGG?

Part of the reason for the drop off is that by 1967 the mid-60's spy craze was in full force, James Bond was no longer than audiences only choice. He also would've seemed like a more middle of the road choice at this point, as films like Modesty Blaise and Casino Royale played up the camp over the top nature of the genre, while The Man Who Came In From The Cold and the Ipcress File presented more realistic alternatives to James Bond. The market was becoming over saturated and Bond would have no longer been seen as the fresh new option at this point, audiences still went to see him but he had already become such a regular staple of the cinema that audiences were less likely to watch the new Bond film multiple times, instead they would watch another spy film or could wait for the next Bond film or Bond double bill to arrive.

As for the further drop with OHMSS that would have been a combination of a new Bond, significantly longer running length and the end of the 60's spy film boom (remember George Lazenby left the role because the figure of Bond was seen as passe at the time and he was convinced the series would end after another film anyway)

Good thoughts. It really surprises me because YOLT strikes me as still being right in the middle of the initial Bond craze and (IMO of course) its a wonderful film. The spread of imitators (and some excellent ones) is a good explanation.

I'm still confused by the relatively poor performance of The Man With the Golden Gun,

Mate, if you can find something else that sucks that good, please introduce me.

Its maybe not as iconic as the films either side but its still a very good Bond film. Really surprised by the drop off.

Just great news. 550M$OS 750m$ WW seems possible but we will see.

It seems it will pass MR and TSWLM adjusted to inflation. GF and TB seems impossible to pass but I think it has a chance to pass YOLT and even LALD.

Skyfall shakes international box office, stirs up $125.2m
2 November, 2012 | By Jeremy Kay

James Bond soared past $100m through Sony and MGM licensees on Tuesday (Oct 30) and there should be plenty more from 007 this weekend as he ventures into more than 50 territories.

Highlights are expected to come from Germany, Argentina, Taiwan, Italy, Hong Kong, Spain and Thailand.
Sony Pictures Releasing International’s Hotel Transylvania has generated $98.3m and the animation hit will cross $100m this weekend.
Paramount Pictures International’s Paranormal Activity 4 stands at $55.4m and opens in France, Japan and Belgium. Bait 3D opens in New Zealand and Fun Size opens in the UK.
EuropaCorp’s Taken 2 stood at $201.7m as of Oct 30 through Fox International, while Ice Age 4 had reached $713m and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter $73.2m ahead of the Japanese debut.
Two awards season contenders arrive in the UK: StudioCanal opens Rust And Bone while Entertainment launches The Master.

In Italy Skyfall earned more than 3.5 million euros in 3 days. It is going to match the 7 million euros QOS earned in all its time at cinema, but in only 7 days

'Starting to think'. I'm certain it will do rather better than $700m worldwide.

The worldwide take means including North America.

Unless there is a dramatic and unforeseen turnaround in Skyfall’s fortune ‘overseas’ or ‘non-domestic’ (odd phrases for me as I’m in the UK, but that’s the excepted parlance when talking box office) will certainly do more than $600m. So when you add any potential North American money for the world wide take... well...

Two weeks ago this was my prediction: Total for Foreign box office: $450M - $500M. Total for Domestic: $210M. Worldwide Total: $650M - $690M

At almost $300M foreign BO, The film will do anywhere from $500M-$550M. Domestic will probably stay the same, $210. Worldwide, at this rate, you're right it'll make more than just $700M worldwide. Anywhere from $730M-$760M is my estimate.

Yes. I think you’re in the right ballpark. However, I’m going to suggest a bit higher. As you say, non-domestic stands at around $300m – so your total of $450m -$500m would mean it only taking another $150m to $200m in the whole of the rest of its run overseas. It made the lower end of that estimate in the last 3 days alone. This would represent a dramatic turnaround for its popularity, and one that I don’t see happening.
I think the final overseas tally will be more like $600m to $650m.
Domestic, I think could be $210m to $240m - let’s split the difference and say $225m. So, I’m going to stick my neck out here and say I think we are going to see a worldwide take of over $800m

Inflation adjusted, the top 10 Bond films are…

1. $1,037,291,060.32 - Thunderball
2. $932,346,267.74 - Goldfinger
3. $843,280,463.96 - Live And Let Die
4. $773,204,227.54 - You Only Live Twice
5. $707,967,950.50 - The Spy Who Loved Me
6. $682,098,608.86 - Casino Royale
7. $670,341,133.13 - Moonraker
8. $662,795,358.02 - Diamonds Are Forever
9. $629,928,504.77 - Quantum Of Solace
10. $596,667,068.63 - From Russia With Love

We know it’s going in there somewhere. I’m going to stick my neck out even further and say that this film could push LALD out of position 3.

That would be simply incredible, and wonderfully appropriate in light of the special relationship of LALD to Mendes and Bardem.
