Hi guys, I've been visiting this site for ages but only today had to create an account to respond to some of the above comments about the new BluRay box set. You guys who are holding onto your DVDs in the belief that they are somehow better than the Blu's must be deluded. A DVD CANNOT and WILL NOT ever be anywhere near the quality of the Blu, especially as the Blu has been remastered. It simply isn't possible. My BluRays from the original Blu releases look absolutely stunning and I'm hoping the rest of the films are as well - my box set has been shipped by Amazon and is due tomorrow.
Maybe you guys complaining about the quality are looking at a small TV and using a poor quality Blu Ray player? I've got a cinema room with an 8ft screen and HD projector and a 7.1 sound set up...I'm not boasting, but my point is that until you witness your Blu's on a large screen with a decent sound system, you don't know what you are missing. Sorry to preach, but you DVD dinosaurs should (if you can, of course) get yourself some decent home cinema kit and see the Bond Blu's with a completely different light. I was so gobsmacked with Dr No it was like watching a brand new movie. I can't wait for the postman tomorrow....
Welcome! Thank you for the post as well!
Yes, I think seeing and hearing a blu ray movie on a 50"+ HDTV and also hearing a full DTS HD Master Audio track is essential before dismissing the blu ray format!
I've upgraded from VHS to DVD then DVD to Blu ray for Bond!
I've had a look at all the new-to-Blu films now, and on the whole, they look very good. There are issues with some of them, though.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service and The Spy Who Loved Me have windowboxed title sequences.
A View to a Kill is still cropped on all four sides, as per the Ultimate Edition DVD.
GoldenEye is a bit soft-looking, due to the noise reduction.
Thanks for the post!
I would like to know more about the mastering and why some of the titles are windowboxed. There must be a good reason for this. It would be nice for Lowry to answer!
Okay, got in late last night. Took a quick look mostly at the extras disc. If you are buying it just for that reason alone - then forget it. Being Bond was a huge let-down. A bunch of clips I've mostly seen from other sources. It's only 2minutes or so also. Very little else on the disc is worth having either. Disappointing. But have to say that the picture in HD generally looks very nice indeed (from what I've seen).
That's pretty much what I expected. I'm not expecting much for the bonus disc.
Quick update. Costco stores are stocking the Bond 50 blu ray set for $149.99. Same price as Best Buy. Target will match as well, if you have a paper copy of the Best Buy ad. Just take the set and ad to customer service.
good luck!
My set is coming from Amazon and should show up sometime next week.
Did anyone else get the set with free book from Amazon?
How is the book?
