I've just listened to the score snippets from a few pages back, sounds rather on the brilliant side, doesn't it? As everybody knows I'm not a music buff; but I know what I like and this sounds fine to me.

So he watched the film again last week. Specifically called me afterward to sarcastically thank me for pointing out the score. "Now I can't watch it and not notice how terrible it is," were his exact words. "What the hell was that guy thinking?"

You and your brainwashing. Poor guy.

I am just glad that I am not the only one who hates GoldenEye's score

I too, initially, was not a fan of Goldeneye's score, QOS..but now I have come to love it as time has gone by.. A little something different now and then never hurts and keeps things interesting is my opinion.

Now as regarding our first preview of Newman's soundtrack...simply AWESOME!! Have to say that "New Digs" is my favorite of the three tracks.. as for those who might be worried about no Bond theme or Bond-esque feel to the score, RELAX!! I'm sure there is plenty of Bond theme in the other parts of the score. It's just being saved for when the soundtrack is released...or, if we're lucky, we get some more preview tracks!

Dove, I feel the same New digs is the best in the lot and you are right about Newman NOT dissapointing ! I liked it :) , Though David Arnold's score will remain my favourite and will always have a special place in my heart :P , This feels a bit refreshing and like you said a change once in a while is not bad (As long as they return back to Arnold again!).I hope the rest of Newman's score continues in this same way

PS: I could never grow to liking Goldeneye's score even though it was the first film I seen in a theater in my life ..It just feels so clunky and uninspired

It's got a pretty lo-fi, grungy sound, but uninspired? What bollocks.

I guess Uninspired is a wrong synonym, But whatever it may be called, its just terrible,Its sets a really depressing feel to the whole movie IMO

The first and third track sound a bit too much like Why so serious, the Joker theme from TDK.

I like the score so much (so far) That I'd be more than happy to have Newman come back for another Bond Film Score. Of the five Bond Film Score's Arnold did, only one I like, QOS.

The first track has a syncopated and sequenced groove like Why So Serious, but the similarities end there. They're both influenced by electronic music (listen to 80s Newman scores like Desperately Seeking Susan and you'll what I mean).

What's your opinion on the fourth track 'Severine' guys? I think it sounds beautiful.

Track 27 'The Moors' I think could be for the Lodge shootout, or something else.

To be honest, only the track Severine is truly sticking out for me as the stand-alone track out the three. Lush and exotic just as Bond should be. I love this track.

The other two I can take or leave and could just as well be in a Bourne movie or any other generic action film these days. Still, it's all a welcome change from the norm and doesn't sound so jarring it should hurt the film. I see many like it, but I have to say the opening track "digs" track is perhaps my least favourite out of the three. Anyway, my opinions will no doubt vary once I've seen the piece as a whole.

That said, composing is the toughest of crafts. All I'm looking for is for a couple musical tracks that help make the film great and the rest of the tracks to support the film. If we get that, I'll be quite happy.

Quite. I'd imagine this is sort of like reacting to the otherwise-excellent QOS score if "Somebody Wants to Kill You", "Forgive Yourself", and "Target Terminated" had been the first previews released. Some solid tracks amongst them, but not exactly the highlights.

Tony Lewis on twitter:

Tony Lewis@MusicEditorcouk
@Skyfall007Fan @jamesbondbr the bigger cues aren't on this compilation.

Exactly. And if you read that conversation history, he's not referring to duration. He's referring to the 'sound', as in, Newman's work is "subdued" (the person's words), but there's more conventionally Bondian music in the score as well. Promising.

Certainly they want to keep the best for the film/soundtrack, no question. But, if you're going down the path of putting out music tracks as a form of a teaser like a film trailer ... shouldn't that be really good stuff? Otherwise, what's the point?

I thought they had teased the good stuff, I really liked what they released in that Youtube piece.

Listening to it again, sounds a bit of something you would expect from a Bourne movie,I still feel Arnold would have done a better job in a proper Bond like manner, though I liked what I heard from Newman, I am guessing our more senior CBn members wont be too fond of this track

I agree, it has it's own unique and distinct sound.

I think Newman has done great so far!

I have been questioning using Newman for this score as he doesn't usually fit in this mold be it seems he found a nice middle ground between his usual sound and the more bombastic Arnold approach. I've always known that he could compose great music but an action film like this worried me some but for the few seconds I listened to while jumping around the Youtube preview it seems I'll be happy to add another Bond score to my collection.

I kind of like the track "New Digs". It reminds me of the safecracking scene in OHMSS and the airport scenes in CR. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

I was hoping for the biggest departure from the established "Bond sound" since Serra's GOLDENEYE (which, incidentally, is my favorite non-Barry score). Looks like I got it. Can't say I love everything there, but it's nice to have a change of pace. I think the finished score has even more stylistic variety than is evidenced in these three tracks, given the more Arnold-like cue you can hear in the CAT clip.

That said, I love the "Severine" track, which is very reminiscent of "We Share the Same Passions" from GOLDENEYE.

No one should be. It's all about how the music fits/compliments the scenes in the movie. I know some have got their knives out already but seriously, let's watch the film on the big screen before rendering a final verdict.

Very nice work. This is a score I already feel more comfortable believing I'll want to listen to for pleasure, which already elevates it past the majority of Arnold's work, which, with several definite exceptions, has been growing stale for me. And good for Tom Newman for not being sucked into the conventional wisdom of "If it's not Barry, it's crap." Been waiting to hear music in these movies that is this much of a change-up for a good while, now. I only hope he uses the Bond theme sparingly, maybe once in the PTS (done) and one good, solid time in the film proper to make that scene really stand out. Other than that, I'm good hearing small developmental riffs on it, but I don't want it in my face 4 separate times in the movie; that's a little much. Since it's been talked to death lately anyway, a good example is GE: The Goldeneye Overture (featuring the guitar line on timpani-- lovely) and the film version of "A Pleasant Drive in St. Petersburg" are really the only major instances of the Bond theme after that fabulous gunbarrel music (which was my favorite since OHMSS at that point).

Can't wait for the rest.

I'm really hoping we get a good Bond theme at any point in the film, to elevate the action or just for the cool factor. Very slick work so far.

It's not bad music. It just doesn't grab you by the throat as, "Bond." It could be any number of other things. That's the one aspect of it I don't like.

Reserving judgement, though. In the context of the full album (and by lord, I want to hear the full track from that train chase so badly), I don't think I'll ultimately care that the tracks have a Newman-y sound to it as long as there is enough definitive, Barry/Arnold-inspired conventional Bond music wrapped around them.

I mean, it's not as if Newman's trademark tinkly piano is going to accompany the gunbarrel.

EDIT: In terms of "generic-ness", I've actually, really, come around on The Moors. It's not melodic action, but it's intensely rhythmically-driven music and no doubt will amplify whatever's onscreen. There's a nice little Bond theme riff on a flute at one point, too. Played mysteriously and syncopated in a way that's not normal, but still very cool.

Here's my problem with New Digs: I agree, it's groovy and cool and neat ambience (very reminiscent of 'Inside Man', which was far and away my favourite QOS track), but it's just so distinctively Newman that the Newman overpowers the Bond. I don't mind both influences being strongly there, I just wish the balance was the other way. The low horn notes partway through are like this wonderful little breath of Barry air, I just wish there was more like that.

I don't know what a "Newman" track sounds like so that could also factor into why I find the work so enjoyable. What are his trademarks?
