He could always use it to strangle someone and mutter "how's that for safe sex?".
Or
"The only protection you need is from me."
Or
"Here's Johnny"
Or equally unlikely and tiresome equivalents

I don't mind Bond drinking Vodka martini's at all.
I understand what people are saying about the Fleming connection of smoking, but I find smoking completely unattractive.

Exactly! It is not just about being PC and a role model (well of course that is under consideration as well) but drinking martinis is still considered glamorous and smoking is not anymore like it was in the 50 and 60s. Now in modern movies it is always villains or degenerate drug users that smoke.
Personally I don't have a problem with Bond lighting up on film, but I understand why he is not smoking anymore.
Scene
Bond goes up to bartender
Bond: I'll have a vodka martini, shaken not stirred
he looks over at a beautiful woman
Bond: My name is Bond, James Bond
woman: I am Jillian Juggs
Bond: excuse me for a minute while I go outside in the back alley and smoke a cigarette

The whole point is that today (at least in the US) you can't smoke anywhere. So instead of just lighting up a cigarette like Bond would have done in the 60s, he has to leave the building and go to the back alley to smoke since in most establishments you can't even smoke 100 ft from the front door.Could you kindly explain why you think Bond would have to excuse himself from something to go out smoking? As a smoker myself I can't see where you wanted to go with the above 'scenario'. Please forgive me for being slow.

Again, I am not a smoking Nazi (although my wife is, she is a former smoker whose father died of lung cancer at 59 years old) and am known to light up after a few drinks, but I do prefer cigars and I do think Bond smoking a cigar would appear "more glamorous" than a cigarette.

In most states you cannot smoke in any public building, bars included.

It's so painfully stupid. If one wants to go to a non-smoking bar, one should go to a non-smoking bar. Next: Fully-clothed topless clubs. (Somebody might walk in and be offended.) Steve McQueen would not approve.
Part of the bar experience is the cigarette smoke mingling with the fine sounds of pool cues, full glasses, and high heels. The country is turning into a nation of puss-- Nevermind.
I'm going for a smoke.

Bond should not be political correct. As the original character smoked cigarettes, he should smoke cigarettes. I agree with those that a machine gun could work but only once or twice in a movie and in a cicumstance that askes for it. I do like him to use his silenced handgun most of the time or even better: his wit. That's what I hated about TND, Bond being Rambo. Ugh!

Don't worry, mate.
If you ask female work colleagues to shove their hands down your trousers and feel your cock like Gray did, or you ask business acquaintances who are clearly emabarrased if they had vigourous sex with a former girlfriend and then suggest that the same acquaintaince could be found every night hanging out of the rear end of the girl in question like Keys, don't worry it won't just be the female PC brigade who are after stringing you up.
A number of fathers, brothers and male friends will also be in a hurry to have a word with you, too.
