He could always use it to strangle someone and mutter "how's that for safe sex?".

Or

"The only protection you need is from me."

Or

"Here's Johnny"

Or equally unlikely and tiresome equivalents

You know that just using a single condom is calling for serious trouble? Always make it three. At least.

It's not necessary. And it's kind of disgusting. My two cents.

I'm referencing the smoking. The condom bit has left me unmoved. Perhaps for the better.

I don't mind Bond drinking Vodka martini's at all. :)

I understand what people are saying about the Fleming connection of smoking, but I find smoking completely unattractive. :)

Exactly! It is not just about being PC and a role model (well of course that is under consideration as well) but drinking martinis is still considered glamorous and smoking is not anymore like it was in the 50 and 60s. Now in modern movies it is always villains or degenerate drug users that smoke.

Personally I don't have a problem with Bond lighting up on film, but I understand why he is not smoking anymore.

Scene
Bond goes up to bartender

Bond: I'll have a vodka martini, shaken not stirred
he looks over at a beautiful woman
Bond: My name is Bond, James Bond
woman: I am Jillian Juggs
Bond: excuse me for a minute while I go outside in the back alley and smoke a cigarette

I could see him lighting up a cigar with a contact (DAD style), but no more cigarettes for Bond in film. It just don't work anymore. Unless, of course, it was a period piece. Then he could smoke like a chimney.

While a cigarette might be pushing the boundaries too far these days, I think Daniel Craig smoking a fine cigar in a refined establishment over drinks would be a classy touch - and given this new curve of Bond's origins - would show audiences the newly minted '007 ' is learning to savor and appreciate the finer things in life...in between all the murder and mayhem! Would be very Flemingesque if done well ;)

Could you kindly explain why you think Bond would have to excuse himself from something to go out smoking? As a smoker myself I can't see where you wanted to go with the above 'scenario'. Please forgive me for being slow.

I ask because I know for a fact that heavy smokers can go for ages without a cigarette. I've been to nightclubs, dinners, weddings, God knows where else and have never excused myself simply to go out smoking and I smoke about 40 cigarettes a day (if not more).

I also fly almost everyday (have done for the past twenty-two years) in a helicopter for two to three hours non stop and I certainly don't ask the pilot to kindly land so that I can light up (No. I don't smoke in the helo either).

I smoke when I can smoke.
Simple as that.
And so would Bond.

If I'm outside, enjoying a pleasant moment on the balcony of some exotic Casino, enjoying the warm starry starry night, I'd light up one of those Royals and inhale deeply on the thick grey smoke and simply enjoy that moment thoroughly.

But if I'm inside and I go up to the bartender and ask for a vodka martini, shaken not stirred (I drink Scotch most of the time. Mind you, I like my bubbly too you see) and look over at a beautiful woman, yes, I probably would say: My name is Fawkes, Harry Fawkes; and if the darling says 'I am Jillian Juggs', believe me you I would not interrupt such a moment by excusing myself to go smoke a cigarette in the back alley.

And again, I'm a forty cigarette a day smoker.

Mind you, I would smoke a cigarette on my way to my parked Aston Martin while I tell the sexy thing about my time in the *** and how many people I've actually killed in my life,,,,

No seriously though, just because somebody smokes doesn't mean its as if he's hooked on bleedin' heroin or something.

It is not as bad as some make out!

Is smoking sexy?

Bloody right it is!

The whole point is that today (at least in the US) you can't smoke anywhere. So instead of just lighting up a cigarette like Bond would have done in the 60s, he has to leave the building and go to the back alley to smoke since in most establishments you can't even smoke 100 ft from the front door.

Again, I am not a smoking Nazi (although my wife is, she is a former smoker whose father died of lung cancer at 59 years old) and am known to light up after a few drinks, but I do prefer cigars and I do think Bond smoking a cigar would appear "more glamorous" than a cigarette.

However even though I am not a smoking Nazi, I don't think it is sexy, especially after dealing with the smell of a smoker. I work in the wine business and my nose is significant (the main reason I don't smoke) the smells get in the way of really being able to smell or taste the wine (or food). FOr the same reason I don't wear cologne.

lol :)

I never thought I would see the day where the US's last hold out, Las Vegas, would have smoking restrictions, yet now they do. You can walk down the street with a cocktail, but you cannot light up in a restaurant.

In most states you cannot smoke in any public building, bars included.

BTW, where are you from Harry?

It's so painfully stupid. If one wants to go to a non-smoking bar, one should go to a non-smoking bar. Next: Fully-clothed topless clubs. (Somebody might walk in and be offended.) Steve McQueen would not approve.

Part of the bar experience is the cigarette smoke mingling with the fine sounds of pool cues, full glasses, and high heels. The country is turning into a nation of puss-- Nevermind.

I'm going for a smoke.

Well, not really. What some people might forget is that:
- smoking is prohibited in some countries, not all.
- in those countries where smoking is prohibited, it is prohibited in public areas (i.e, not private locations).
So, basically, you can have Bond smoke a cigar in many countries (e.g, Broz' smoking a cigar while talking to his sleeper agent in Cuba; DAD) and/or you can have Bond smoke a cigar while he's in someone's estate (say, the villain's lair) or even in his Hotel room (for those hotels which do allow it).

Bond should not be political correct. As the original character smoked cigarettes, he should smoke cigarettes. I agree with those that a machine gun could work but only once or twice in a movie and in a cicumstance that askes for it. I do like him to use his silenced handgun most of the time or even better: his wit. That's what I hated about TND, Bond being Rambo. Ugh!

If the film and script works it in in regards to automatic weapons cigs etc then fair enough but i do not agree with the sense of having it in just for sake of it. I do not see any difference with him smoking or not. We go on about things been PC but is it that or is it that it does not matter either way. I mean i watched living daylights the other day and Dalton is smoking a cig and he looked gay. he did look gay sat on a desk with a fag he looked like a chick so it might not always work, i did have a chuckle to myslef when he gave Moneypenny a quick slap on the [censored] because today they could not do that.Hell you only have top look at how over the top things got with Andy Gray and old Keys to see how things have got crazy. If anyone hears way we speak about lases and recorded it i be strung up by female pc brigade. Point is the producers ahve to be careful because a massive back lash can effect sales no matter what anyone says. Not so much though in regards to the cigs that does not matter either way.It suits some people but not all and who is to say DC would not look gay with a cig between his fingers. Just leave him how he is thats the best bet

Don't worry, mate.

If you ask female work colleagues to shove their hands down your trousers and feel your cock like Gray did, or you ask business acquaintances who are clearly emabarrased if they had vigourous sex with a former girlfriend and then suggest that the same acquaintaince could be found every night hanging out of the rear end of the girl in question like Keys, don't worry it won't just be the female PC brigade who are after stringing you up.

A number of fathers, brothers and male friends will also be in a hurry to have a word with you, too.

Is cancer relegated to smoking only?

I know guys who never touched a fag in their life and died of cancer. I also know guys who lived till they were well into their seventies and still smoked and felt and looked 10 times better than people of their same age bracket who didn't smoke.

I don't won't to generalise here but I'm sick of such arguments with regards to Bond smoking.

I mean, heck, the poor guy could die any minute now from a bullet between the eyes, you think he gives a damn about cancer. Not to mention kidney failure (the chap drinks like a whore too or didn't anyone notice).

Oh, right, I know where we're going here.

Bond-San should be squeaky clean.

Of course. Silly me. I forgot. This is the new age we're living in. Not the sixties anymore.

That's right.

No drink.

No smoke.

No sex with other women (AIDS anyone).

No living on the edge.

Goody goody clean politically correct Mr. James [censored]ing Bond. And just 'cause some people out there might start doing the [censored] he does and hurt/kill themselves.

Read my lips though: IAN FLEMING'S JAMES BOND IS A HEAVY SMOKER. HE IS A HEAVY DRINKER. HE [censored] WOMEN FOR THE SIMPLE PLEASURE OF IT. HE KILLS MEN AND WOMEN AND DOESN'T GIVE 2 [censored]s ABOUT IT.

AND THAT IS WHAT YOU SHOULD LOVE ABOUT HIM!

So please, all you anti smokers out there, give the POOR guy a break and let him be what his creator intended him to be in the first place.

;)

hey smudge76, don't apologise mate. No need. As far as I know (and which is one of the main reasons I come to this site (it's the best one on the whole net)) everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as you don't insult the other members. I respect your opinion and it is opinion like yours that set the debate going. So, keep up with the posts and don't let anyone detract you. If you think TD looked gay smoking, then, fine. Let's argue it out and see where we get (without insulting one another of course). So cut a long story short, [censored] the apology :D !
