Hmm..have to say I'm very underwhelmed by the title and the extremely boring looking cover.. :( Personally, I'd prefer "Project X" as a title, but I suppose it really depends on the story.. I do plan on checking this out though..hopefully it will be a better novel than Devil May Care, which I did enjoy to an extent, but we'll see..

I don't know any James Bond fans that would be against having 007 smoke in CARTE BLANCHE. It's an important part of his character IMO but Jeffery Deaver has told us that his James Bond would no longer smoke.

Yes, and people say all sorts that changes or puts the audience off the scent for the right reasons. Perhaps the task in hand results in Bond taking up the habit again? Or maybe Carte Blanche is a brand name of cigarettes used as a business front...? (!)

This really could be something special. The key now is to keep our expectations in check. We have yet to read a page of Deaver's work, so a lot remains to be seen. So far so good. :)

It's also sort of what this reboot is all about...Deaver has Carte Blanche to reinvent James Bond.

Ermm... how many times are the films and the novels getting rebooted?

As far as I know both only had one reboot. So to answer your question One

Reboot is the new buzz word for "doing another one". It used to be the next chapter, instalment, follow on or sequel but in the times we live in that is not fashionable, the consumption of product is so transient now (does SPIDEY 4 really need to be a reboot?) and fewer and fewer films are actually rebooting anything in their paper-thin attempts to not be sequels.

OHMSS was another film reboot. They didn't call it that but it was. How so?...................... Well, Blofeld does not recognize 007 and he should according to YOLT. Or maybe YOLY was the reboot and they went back to series after that? Either way.... one of them was a reboot.

" The title and UK cover design of the new James Bond book were revealed at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature in Dubai on Monday 17th January 2010." IFP Website

Looks like the US will be getting something different.

Also looks like a typo on the year.

Poetic licence goes almost as far as the need to make money from a cinematic cash cow. Cinema's potted history is full of what is now termed ret-conning and "rebooting" but would have been classed a re-imagining or the further adventures of...

Films:
-Bond was rebooted in CR. At the end of that film, "James becames Bond". But in QOS, Bond is still thinking in Vesper until the end, so he gets rebooted again and we're crissing fingers to have a "normal" 23rd Bond film.

Books:
-Bond returns to 1965 in DMC continuing his adventures where Fleming left him off, and now he returns to nowadays... rebooted.

I think many people in the Bond universe are taking too much "carte blanche" since 1999...

Invisible cars, Gunbarrel out of place, Parkinson-suffering cameramen, Bond stealing shops, Bond versus Al Qaeda... OMG, what's next? Bond of the future against Blofeld's android nephews?

I think Carte Blache might be one of the most Flemingesque titles of all the continuation novels. I think it could have multiple meanings as well. "Carte Blanche" might be a reference to Bond's "licence to kill." It's also sort of what this reboot is all about...Deaver has Carte Blanche to reinvent James Bond.

The title and cover is sophisticated, gutsy, confident, and literate. Everything about it echoes the 1953 edition of Casino Royale.

Totally agree zencat.

Question, will there be a different cover for the US, as was the case with Devil May Care?

I've fired off an email to my U.S. contact (who has been very helpful and responsive). It's a Holiday today. Maybe I'll hear something tomorrow.

Simon & Schuster will undoubtedly give the US alternative cover art.

I like it. CARTE BLANCHE and the themes in the book that it refers to sound very Fleming to me. The cover is simple, elegant. Not what I was expecting, but it does inspire confidence. That's not the cover of a book the publisher is unsure about. Even Faulks' DEVIL MAY CARE proclaimed its connection to Bond louder. This design says they're certain they've got a winner with this one.

I don't think it makes sense in a modern context for Bond to smoke. Sure, Fleming's Bond smoked, but nearly everyone in the 50s and 60s smoked. It's a different world now, one in which smoking is no longer equated with glamour and sophistication. Quite the opposite. If anything, smoking has become more associated with the poor and the weak-willed.

Here's a crazy idea. Not saying I want or expect this, just an idea.

What if they made four different covers, all pieces of a larger puzzle. You know, the cover under this would feature the source of the smoke, etc. Each cover would work on it's own (as this one does), but bring them together and they form this cool revealing image. Oh, and there would be a fifth version that would feature the entire image, but that would would have a very small printing and be infuriatingly rare. Then schmucks like me have to buy them all. What a beautiful dream. :P

I agree with Gravity. And yes, I understand that finding a title for Bond is a hell of a job... except for Deaver, who has already picked the title for his next Bond novel and has "carte blanche" from IFP to use it...

YELLOW PAGES, a James Bond novel by Jeffrey Deaver.

An obligatory rant: More than frustrating, I have to say, that our great nation of Canada will undoubtedly be lumped in with the US launch and create a sort of hybrid North American beast. Mid-May would be considerably more preferable, and in my humble, arctic opinion, more logical given that we were technically part of the ol' Commonwealth first, as opposed to nowadays being treated solely as America's geographical hat.

I can't say that this appeals to me. IMO Jeffrey Deavers James Bond isn't Ian Flemings. Flemings was born in the 20's and served during the 2nd world war. Deavers on the other hand was born in the 60's and has served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ive said this before and I'm gonna say it again 'Think they have taken the reboot a little to far'

And the title just doesnt have that Bond vibe to it
