I began to check out all those Connery films that I had missed. And I have to say that I was absolutely wrong when I stated on one of the other threads that Connery basically always played the same persona. In fact, he is incredibly versatile.

These are some Connery movies I recently watched (or re-watched) and was simply amazed how good he is (and how good these movies are):

- ROBIN AND MARIAN

- CUBA

- WRONG IS RIGHT

- FIVE DAYS ONE SUMMER

I agree, Connery is much more versatile than many give him credit for.

My 5 fav non-Bonds are:

The Hill - He gives a brilliant, powerhouse performance - and his first film with the great Sidney Lumet.

The Offence - Another gut wrenching performance and truly disturbing. His 2nd with Lumet.

Outland - under-rated movie IMO - and Connery gives one of his best and, in many ways, understated and dignified performances. Just watch how he tries to contain his emotions when he realizes his wife and son have left him.

The Name of the Rose - Just great stuff. He brings such gravity, humour and warmth.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He steals every scene, and again, effortlessly brings unexpected depth and genuine emotion to the film and shares great chemistry with Ford.

"The Man Who Would Be King" is one of my favorite films, Connery or no. But it sure doesn't hurt that he's in it.

"Robin and Marian" is great, but the others I'm just so-so on, except "Wrong is Right," which is horrible. Not Sean so much, but the film.

I'd add "The Hunt For Red October," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and (for a real change of pace) "Finding Forrester".

Also, back in the days before internet spoilers, there were few moments more awesome than the one in "Time Bandits" when Agamemnon takes off that crazy helmet/mask to reveal Sean Connery! I still get a smile just thinking about it.

Yes, The Man Who Would be King is superb. I'll have to bump Indy 3 to 6th place on my list now.

I'm a huge fan of Indana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Rock, Highlander and The Anderson Tapes.

I really like The Hill, Rising Son, The Untouchables, Outland, Wrong is Right and even Zardoz. I think I am one of the few people who like Family Business. I actually saw that when it came out its opening weekend during Christmas of '89.

Most of his others I can watch. I've always wanted to see The Offence and The First Great Train Robbery, which I taped years ago and never watched.

Some I've never been able to finish like The Molly Maguires, First Knight, Time Bandits and Medicine Man.

A couple of his more acclaimed films I am not real fond of at the moment are The Man Who Would Be King, which I had a VHS tape of years ago, and The Hunt For Red October. I saw that when it came out and haven't bothered with it since.

I love FAMILY BUSINESS. Despite its weaknesses it has some wonderful scenes and Connery, Hoffman and Broderick are just spectacular fun in their roles.

I thought he was wonderful in The Offence and I also have a soft spot for Time Bandits. I love the final scene where he jumps onto the fire engine and winks at the little boy

Agreed. I sometimes like to think of The Rock as a Bond film if for no other reason than it's a much better send-off for Connery in the role than either Diamonds are Forever or Never Say Never Again were.

I'm amazed that "The Man Who Would Be King" isn't near the top of everybody's lists;
as someone else posted, this is one of my all-time fave movies;
if you havent seen it, this is simply a must-see, a classic in every sense and Connery's strongest performance.

This is almost impossible to restrict to 5, however by way of opening the debate, here are 5 more odd-ball offerings that are still great too watch:

MARNIE (1964)
THE MOLLY MAGUIRES (1970)
THE ANDERSON TAPES (1971)
A BRIDGE TOO FAR (1977)
RISING SUN (1993)

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING
THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER
ZARDOZ

(Yes... ZARDOZ.)

Oh, I'm with you on Zardoz. A great story I thought but the film could have been better.
Apart from that ...
Highlander
Outland
Hunt For Red October
The Man With The Deadly Lens (aka Wrong is Right, I believe?) I've just ordered that on DVD
Untouchables

All of the rest, he is good in but they're not my favourites.

Following up my odd ball selection...
has anyone seen these 1950s movies?

ACTION OF THE TIGER (1957)
ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER PLACE (1958)
TARZAN'S GREATEST ADVENTURE (1958)
DARBY O'GILL & THE LITTLE PEOPLE (1959)
ON THE FIDDLE (ok this one is 1961)

All before he was famous.
The Tarzan one is quite good. Anthony Quayle's in it too (playing the villian - Sean is his sidekick) it's in colour and is very violent for a "kids" movie.
On the Fiddle was a sort of slapstick crime caper that I remember being mildly amusing.

Speaking of Tarzan's Greatest Adventure, it's ironic that since Connery is a mere henchman in here and the lead Gordon Scott would then go on to star in a few of the Eurospy movies of the 60s due to Bondmania.

I remember Outland had a badguy setting up some gun and his eyes were freaky glowy like from Blade Runner.

The Rock: If for nothing else just this line "Losers always whine about their best. The winners go home and f*** the Prom Queen."
The Man Who Would Be King: second because it has both James Bond and Harry Palmer.
The Hunt For Red October

Darby O'Gill is currently showing on the Hallmark Channel. I'm disappointed that they've dubbed some of the voices of the main actors...I guess they dubbed the Irish accents too hard to understand.
