Xenobia (12 Mar, 2002 11:09 p.m.):
MBE:  I like the poem, and in context of Bond the poem works -- but not the title, for Bond is no coward.  He will die today, thank you very much.

From here on out, I am refering to this movie as NAT -- Needs Another Title.

-- Xen

So Bond will die today, and not return for another adventures, thats not Bond is it? He's not a coward because nobody does it better then him.

I don't see your reasoning, Bond's always survived, and we know James Bond will be returning, he gives it his all in his missions, and will Die Another Day, sure he will die sometime, but not the days were watching him on missions in the films, unless were its billed as the last Bond, but its not, Bond will be returning in Bond 21, Die Another Day suits the film fine, Bond is no coward, and would do his best not to die at the same time do the job for King and Country.

I just remembered a song by Dream Theater called Another Day and while it is a little too heavy (but very melodic) for a Bond the lyrics are very appropriate I feel and could be sung to suit a Bond movie

Great minds think alike :-)

I just saw your thread on it, James. :)

PS: Daniel may want to start a dedicated thread about title song speculations as there are threads all over the place on this subject.

I was just looking into further details of the title. I found that MGM registered the domain on Feb 14 2002! That's a long time ago. Seems they had it planned for quite some time, I wonder why the long delay? One month of legal investigation? I have a feeling they had to buy the rights to this one, maybe someone else was using it or something very similair!

Think about it. One month ago they registered the domain. So how long before that were they throwing it across the table at meetings?

Anyway, I really like the title. And it's good to see that the majority do too.

A lot better than that Beyond/Beneath the Ice/Sea stuff we've been hearing about. However, I don't particularly like it too much, nor do I dislike it. It's rather plain, but still sticks in my head. I'd probably like it better a Benson title for one of his books.

Count me in on liking Die Another Day as the title. At least it's not Attack of the Face Changers or The Lurking Menace or something.

Also, anybody thinking it is too close to Tomorrow Never Dies should keep in mind the story that that film was supposed to be Tomorrow Never Lies, but a printing mistake changed it to Dies, which stuck from that point on.

Just for fun, I thought I'd break down the recurring words in the titles. You'd get:
The 5 times (The Man With the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, The World Is Not Enough)
Gold 3 times (Goldfinger, The Man With the Golden Gun, GoldenEye)
Die/Dies 3 times (Live and Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day)
Live/Living 3 times (You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, The Living Daylights)
With 2 times (From Russia With Love and The Man With the Golden Gun)
You/Your 2 times (You Only Live Twice, For Your Eyes Only)
Kill 2 times (A View To a Kill, Licence To Kill)
Love/Loved 2 times (From Russia With Love, The Spy Who Loved Me)
Day 2 times (The Living Daylights and Die Another Day)

Plus, if you wanted, you could throw in Never Say Never Again and Tomorrow Never Dies and the original title From A View To A Kill and From Russia With Love. I may have missed one or two. What can I say? I've got a 40-minute drive home from work and a lot of time to ponder until Nov. 22.

Sounds very good.

Uh oh. They used the word "the" in TMWTGG, TLD, and TWINE. Lets over react.

As long as the film is good.

We gotta hope they start adapting books again. How many years has it been since an adapted book?

We need the Union.

High Time to Kill (Great name in my opinion)

Doubleshot (RENAME: More Than Meets the Eye (Le Gerant is blind, no?))

Never Dream of Dying (Great Name. They've never used Dying in a title.)

But a 4 word, five word, 4 word trilogy? I dunno.

Although:

From Russia With Love (4)
Thunderball (1)
You Only Live Twice (4)
On Her Magesty's... (5)
Diamonds Are Forever (3)

So take the Blofeld trilogy YOLT, OHMSS, and DAF, and you get 4,5,3. Close.

Why would they use the title of the book if it is not based on the book? That eliminates comparing future adaptions to books.

I'm amazed by the tons of people on here that actually like this hooooooooooooooooooooooooooorribly BORING title. Die Another Day?!?!?!?!? I asked several of my friends and they all said the same: "Sounds way too much like Tomorrow Never Dies, plus it sounds like some cheap TV movie of the week."
Lets jsut hope the movie will be way better than this sad, sad, saaaaaaaaaaad title ....

Just an observation about the title and CBN. :)

After all these months on the CBN forums I find it a little strange seeing the title at the top of the Forum Index page instead of "Bond 20" and "Bond 20 And Beyond". :)

And the word "Die" makes it look a little German.

Yes, that's right, Blofeld's cat. But it's harder to imagine Arnold Schwarzeneggers pronunciation of this title - trust me. I can't get this out of my head... ;-)

Well, here are some quotes which I found at http://www.quotemeonit.com
There's also a Tina Turner song with this topic. But in my opinion these quotes emphasize Bond's situation in this movie. It seems 007 is fighting Colonel Moon not once, but twice. And so on...

He who attacks must vanquish.
He who defends must merely survive.
- Master Kahn

He that fights and runs away,
may live to fight another day.
- Traditional Proverb

Fighting is like champagne. It goes to
the heads of cowards as quickly as of
heroes. Any fool can be brave on a battlefield
when it's be brave or else be killed.
- Margaret Mitchell

You must not fight too often with one enemy,
or you will teach him all your art of war.
- Napoleon Bonaparte

ROFL - I had *exactly* the same feeling.

For the last three days I have been battling with German to get the new server up and running, and reading lots and lots of German technical pages.
Now everytime I see "Die An...." my brain flips into German decoding mode and for a split second, it all looks very very wrong.

And what a title it is. I like it a LOT. It's much better than Double Cross or Beneath The Sea. Not quite sure if it's better than Beyond The Ice. But it's very good though. Looking forward to see it.

"Die Another Day"?

Well initially I was over the moon to finally have the title, but 2 minutes later I thought, shoot: "Beyond The Ice" was better.

Bu tI guess the MGM/EON marketing people stepped in at one point and tramped on Bab's favourite title as "an unmarketable nonsense especially when translated". Hence we have DAD.

Oh well...

MI6 secured the .co.uk and .tv domains, so hey ho, time for CBN & MI6 to plough ahead with the best coverage of a new Bond movie the world has ever seen.

Great things are upon us :)

I just thought I'd mention though, I've seen it in the media a fair bit. It was page 2 news in MX which is a Melbourne newspaper. Bond is in the media again :)

No. :)

Promise? Really, that title makes me roll my eyes, right up there with... sorry Mr. Fleming... Thunderball. Unique doesn't necessarily mean better, sometimes it can just mean weird or goofy. ie: Wizard of Ice. Uh no thanks.

Eon has made it quite clear that they will NEVER EVER use a post-Fleming Glidrose title, EVER! It's not about rights (they own the rights), I suspect it's about ego. If they were going to use a non-Fleming Bond book title I think we can all agree this would have been the time to do it. After today, I'm ready to go on record and say we will NEVER see a Bond movie called COLONEL SUN or ICEBREAKER or any other Amis/Gardner/Benson title.

Thanks zencat.

Interesting. After the Colonel Moon -> Sun theories, I thought they might be going to use it.

I'd still like to see something added to the title to give a fuller ring to it. DIE ANOTHER DAY is a good title, but it just seems a little too streamlined for mainstream audiences.

Well, my first impression was "another die" title so soon after Tomorrow Never Dies. But then we had Licence to Kill soon after A View to a Kill. It's certainly much better than that Beyond the Icerink ****, which never sounded Flemingesque at all. DAD might grow on me eventually, although I wouldn't have minded a title with "death" in it - maybe something like DIE ANOTHER DEATH for example? :)

As promised, I have returned with more reactions from the 'general public'....

badblokebob says: they announced the title of Bond 20 2day: "Die Another Day"
NeverEnder says: hmm
NeverEnder says: not too bad

badblokebob says: "Die Another Day"
K'jstii K'uin K'ra says: lol
K'jstii K'uin K'ra says: bears absolutely *no* resemblence to the previously predicted titles.
K'jstii K'uin K'ra says: and i preferred Beyond the Ice
badblokebob says: ah well, i'm sure it'll grow on us
K'jstii K'uin K'ra says: Possibly.

badblokebob says: "Die Another Day"
the chinkey man says: original (ish)
the chinkey man says: sounds cliched though

So, I think it's safe to say that most people [I know] think it's funny rather than good. Ah well, it's only those kind of people that Eon/MGM have to try and sell it to :)

Also, we can't forget the second thread that's been started that is against the title. I don't know if that same thread would have been started if the title were Beyond The Ice, since the anticipation was there and everyone had expressed their support/criticism beforehand.

Three words: ABOUT BLOODY TIME! Ahem. Anyway, at this point I was about to take any title, be it bad or good. Getting sick of calling it "Bond 20". I think it could work, given some other titles from years past (Octopussy?). I think that we're all so used to calling it Bond 20 that we aren't used to "Die Another Day." I kinda like it.
(BTW zencat, sorry about the PM from before, I sent it to the wrong person.)

Gosh what do I say? Die Another Day

What a bloody cuss fantastic title! Yes Beyond The Ice grew on me. Yes I loved Cold Eternity. But Die Another Day is fantastic.

Well done to Eon Productions for picking a good title. And the same goes to MGM for letting Eon pick a good title!

I'm pretty certain we'll see the title as some form of dialogue. Perhaps someone who saves Bond's life in the torture scene? "This isn't the day to die Bond, die another day, not now..."

Finally a bloody good title for Bond 20!

And what a day to release it! My birthday ;D Thank you to Eon for such an honour and such a memory!

Found at of all places AICN in the Talk Back section:

A.E. Housman
THE DAY OF BATTLE

"Far I hear the bugle blow
To call me where I would not go,
And the guns begin the song,
'Soldier, fly or stay for long.'

"Comrade, if to turn and fly
Made a soldier never die
Fly I would, for who would not?
'Tis sure no pleasure to be shot.

"But since the man that runs away
Lives to die another day,
And cowards' funerals, when they come,
Are not wept so well at home,

"Therefore, though the best is bad,
Stand and do the best, my lad;
Stand and fight and see your slain,
And take the bullet in your brain."

I love Die Another Day--Beyond the Ice was such a horrible title. The word "Beyond" in a title sounds like something a 7-year old would title a story with because he can't think of anything witty. Other than the fact that Brosnan has already been in a film w/ the word "Die" in the title, it's a perfect choice.

There seems to be a general opinion that DAD is an "OKAY" title, but nothing to get excited about. I really hope that with LT as DIR, Bond 20 will be alot better than OK. For the 40th AV, maybe everything will be more exotic and/or original than the new title. The title's not bad, but it's just not what you would call outstanding. It's sort of the "SAFE WAY TO GO"

Yeah, it's obviously not Flemingesque in any fashion. That's why I'm saying Bensonesque. Here, take a look at my reasoning. These are the books he's done, including the film novelizations. Zero Minus Ten, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Facts of Death, High Time To Kill, The World Is Not Enough, Doubleshot, Never Dream of Dying, The Man With The Red Tattoo, Die Another Day *considering he does write the book to the movie* Makes perfect sense to me. He's written five books that have the word 'death' or 'die' in them. All have been pretty damn fun good reads. So yes, to me DAD is a good title. It'll lead to Bond 21...what could that title be? Die Another Time? :)
