Admittedly, it helps, but I remain hopeful that the upcoming director's cut of THE EXPENDABLES will win you over. :P

Resident Evil: Afterlife

I've always enjoyed the Resident Evil movies, I know they're far from being oscar worthy material, but overall they've been entertaining one way or another. The first was great, Apocalypse was alright, Extinction was great, if not on par with the first. Afterlife however, is just awful.

Who the HELL is the Executioner? and who created him? Why is Afterlife full of pointless slow motion shots? Why does Alice never show any emotion at all? Why is she making a video diary for half an hour? Why do the zombies have weird tentacles? Yes, I know that they're from Resident Evil 5 but honestly, it's never explained. Why are they here? Why is Wesker dressed like The Terminator? Where is Jill Valentine? She was credited but I'm positive that she wasn't even in the damn thing. Why does Clare dissapear for half an hour? Oh, and probably the most important question of all, who in the right mind hires composers under the name 'TomandAndy' to compose a movie like this?

Also, I love how confident they are about a sequel. They even left the damn thing on a cliffhanger. Probably one of the worst cliffhangers I've ever seen. The only redeeming feature I can actually think of in this garbage is Milla Jovovich and even she isn't on top form.

Overall, probably one of the worst films I've ever seen. Bad acting. Bad writing. Bad dialogue. Utterly pointless. They should've stopped at Extinction.

Yeah. I think NYFF is playing it next month, IIRC.

I need to set aside time to see it.

Have you seen much of Godard's post-60s work? If not, I'd try to check out something beforehand so you know what you're getting into. NOTRE MUSIQUE or IN PRAISE OF LOVE are the two recent Godards that I find worthwhile.

UTRH was fantastic. I saw the world premiere at the San Diego Comic Con and it was a smash hit! The only issue I had with it was John DiMaggio voicing the Joker, but other than that, it was flawless.

Saw a critics screening of Aronofsky's "Black Swan" this week which jumped straight into my top 5 of the year list (The Town, Inception, The American and..something else!)
Definitely a must see; outstanding direction with a couple of amazing perfomances.
Will be surprised if I see many better pics this year, it really had an impact on me and 4 days later i'm still thinking about it...

[rec] 2

A very good film. Definitely not as good as the first, and the last act wasn't really that impressive. I love foreign films though, and I really do find most of them superior to the films we get over here, without a doubt. For a horror film, [rec] 2 is great. The hand held camera stuff is brilliant, and highly realistic.

Buried.

Easily one of the most imaginative and brilliantly crafted films of this year. Everything in this film is perfect. The lighting, the camera angles, the plot. Brilliantly driven and acted. I found myself on the edge of my seat quite a few times, and felt I could relate to the simple fact that most humans are useless in a crisis. This is not just a film about a man in a box, it's so much more than that. It's full of depth and story. Some say they found the film very claustrophobic but I felt oddly soothed by the whole affair. I actually dropped off for a few seconds on several occasions. Not because the film is boring, far from it in fact. It's just full of natural sounds, which were really relaxing, in an odd way.

It also came to my attention that some people just don't know what a good film is. They just can't appreciate anything different. The cinema was full of fat and scruffy teenagers, expecting to be scared. They ended up disappointed due to the lack of blood and gore. After the film finished, all I heard was profanity. The film was awful apparently. To tell you the truth, it's one of the best films of 2010. It's different and imaginative, and just such a massive step up from the generic movies the film industry is churning out at the moment.

I loved the soundtrack as well, the opening titles were quite Hitchcockian.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One

I've always been a massive fan of the Harry Potter series, but I felt the series really lost something after Goblet of Fire. Order of the Phoenix and The Half Blood Prince were decent entries to the series, but they felt rather dull and uninspired. Though I found the final act of Half Blood Prince fantastic, and probably the best final half hour of the series. Now, we come to Deathly Hallows part one. My biggest concern with this, prior to the screening was the idea of David Yates directing. I personally find him rather boring, BUT with Deathly Hallows he actually hits the nail on the head. There's some really awkward moments, but overall it's more than a solid entry to the series. The reason I think Yates has made a success of this is because it's so different. It's a road movie. No Hogwarts. No Teachers. No Dumbledore. No safety. It's fantastic.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson really do give their best performances of the series. Plus, we FINALLY get the Harry Potter theme music in an action cue. Something I've always wanted to hear. The first 20 minutes are absolutely delicious, though I would've like to see more of the Dursleys. I always wanted to see the moment where Vernon, Petunia and Dudley come to an understanding with Harry. There's some really brilliant and touching scenes present in Hallows. I especially loved the scenes set in and around Godric's Hollow as well, one of the highlights of the movie for me. I really enjoyed the mini pre-titles sequence, too. Beautifully directed. It was brilliant to see Alan Rickman also, even if it was for a few minutes. Severus Snape is my favorite character in the entire series, and during his entire scene I was sitting with an insane grin on my face. I'm glad to say he didn't feel missed at all, though. The film flowed perfectly. Some reviews I read stated that they found most of the countryside stuff boring. I'm the complete opposite, I actually thought the scenes were a refreshing change from the usual Hogwarts locations. In fact, most of the cinematography was stunning.

Overall, a fantastic entry to the series, one of the best. There was some stuff the film makers decided not to include that bugged me, but they were quite faithful to the book overall, so I'm alright with it. Eagerly awaiting Part Two.

:****.:

Saw 3D
So, it finally comes to an end. I can't make up my mind whether this was good or bad. I loved the return of Doctor Gordon, but the twist was rather noneffective considering he only pops up in the movie twice. I didn't like how Jigsaw was only in one scene. I didn't like how Jill has been turned into a damsel in distress. Nor, do I like how bad the effects are. But, the last act of the film is quite strong. I loved Hoffman in the police station, it was rather cool. The twist was entertaining, but as I said before, non affective.

This is pretty much all I say. A weak entry with a mildly satisfying closure. Please don't make another one.

Saw a couple of great movies this last week;

The Fighter
Definitely one of my faves of the year. Well written and directed and some superb performances; Wahlberg is solid, Adams and Leo very good and Bale is sensational, a very strong bet for the supporting actor Oscar.
I'd reccomend this to just about anyone; well worth seeing.

The Kings Speech
Another great movie with strong performances; I thought Tom Hollands 'The Damned United' was one of my fave pics of last year and this is as good if not better. Firth, Rush and Bonham Carter are all terrific and should all pick up Oscar noms; another one I'd strongly recommend.

The Ghost Writer had to be literally one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. Attempt at humor- admirable, plot line that keeps you guessing- not bad really, overall- just an incredibly boring movie. Can't believe how many people put it in their top.

Tron Legacy
I'll be honest. The trailers for this one looked absolutely awful, the only reason I actually went to see this was because my friend said he'd pay for my ticket. Tron definitely isn't the best film in the world, but I really really enjoyed it. The 3D is probably the best I've seen. Yes, I'm including Avatar in that. The CGI is gorgeous, and I honestly feel like I want to go and see this again. This is coming from someone who isn't that much of a fan of 3D, btw. But yeah, a very enjoyable ride. The only gripe I have with it is how painfully awful Sams dad is to watch. He's totally CGI, and considering how beautiful everything else is in the movie, it's really off putting that he looks so bad. I haven't seen the original so I have nothing to compare it too, but I loved what I saw. Beautiful.

I'm going to try and contribute - bearing in mind my taste isn't the same as everyone else's:

Inception - A decent movie, with some decent set pieces and some acceptable acting, it seemed like the sort of movie that thinks its cleverer than it actually is.

Sherlock Holmes - Good movie, nice reinterpretation of the legend that is SH. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law do Holmes and Watson justice - not quite sure about Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler though.

Iron Man 2 - A movie that had a good concept, but failed in the carry-off. The only decent set-piece was the Monaco fight - and Scarlett Johanssen was hideously miscast as the terribly written Black Widow. Their original choice of Emily Blunt would have been much better.

The A-Team - Like SH, the casting in this remake is more-or-less spot-on. Sure, there's no real character through-line to the plot, but when you've got set-pieces like the flying tank and the heist in Iraq, those sins can be forgiven. A suprisingly excellent film.

Knight and Day - Similar in concept to Killers, mixing a romantic comedy with a spy-thriller. Here, the elements don't gel quite as well as Killers and, despite some awesome set-pieces, I can't help but think that Roy would have been much better cast with someone like Sam Worthington or Eric Bana.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World - I went to see the movie because my kid brother thinks the books are awesome, but I have to admit that I'm probably just the wrong side of the target audience to appreciate it. That said, there was plentiful eye candy on offer - and I did enjoy the interplay between Scott and Wallace.

Killers - (see review on Knight and Day) The romantic-comedy and spy-thriller elements blended, more or less, effortlessly here - from the beautiful scenery in Nice to the domestic interplay back in the USA. Some pretty good casting too - including Katherine O'Hara as the mother.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - It's probably a good thing that the movie looked good - including the brief flashes of Jake Gylenhaals tasty chest - because there was little substance underneath everything. A pale imitation of Clash of the Titans.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief - I love me some Greek mythology and this reinvention of the mythology is an excellent attempt at cashing in on the Harry Potter phenomenon. And, in a rare event, this is probably an occasion where the plot works much better in the film than it does in the book.

Red - I went to see this on my sixth relationship anniversary. There are very few films where I wish that I'd not seen - but this is on that list. I just didn't enjoy it. The elements just didn't work.

The Tourist - Saw this last week with my kid-brother and he almost fell-asleep. I agree, there was something worthwhile about the plot and the few set pieces, but the movie was hideously miscast: Jolie and Pitt had zero chemistry. I'm curious about seeing the original French film.

Heartbreaker - Romain Duris is my future French husband and a top piece of Euro-totty. This is one of my favourite films of the year, ostensibly a romantic comedy though there are elements of 'Hustle' (a UK tv show). Well cast, well filmed - decent plot. I dread to imagine how the remake will destroy it.

Clash of the Titans - I've heard the following used: 'It crapped all over my childhood'. The phrase is most apt here - it looks good, it sounds good, but it lacks all of the charm of the original.

The Sorcerers Apprentice - I saw the film, on my own, one afternoon - because I quite like Jay Baruchel. I didn't go in with much expectations, but came out pleasantly surprised. More so than Percy Jackson, this movie adapts the HP concept to an American setting - can't wait for the sequel.

I'm almost done with all of the 2010 films I've been wanting to see. Going to have to wait until February for the last of them, though, so here's my (mostly) final list.

:*: :*: :*: :*: :*:
Toy Story 3
The American

:*: :*: :*: :*:
The Runaways
The Town
Knight and Day
The Disappearance of Alice Creed
The House of the Devil
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

:*: :*: :*:
Salt
And Soon the Darkness
Predators
Splice
The Ghost Writer

:*: :*:
Edge of Darkness
The Expendables
The Book of Eli
Shutter Island
Iron Man 2

:*:
The Crazies
Green Zone
Grown Ups
Eat Pray Love
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Dinner for Schmucks

:-:
Resident Evil: Afterlife
Old Dogs

MOVIES LEFT TO SEE:

I'll also go by UK theatrical release, I know at least a couple of these was released in the US in 2009
:*: :*: :*: :*: :*:
Toy Story 3
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

:*: :*: :*: :*:
Inception
Shrek Forever After
Megamind
The Expendables
Hot Tub Time Machine
Edge of Darkness
MacGruber

:*: :*: :*:
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Red
Invictus
Kick-[censored]
Cop Out (Though three stars is probably a little generous)
The Lovely Bones

:*: :*:
The Princess and the Frog
Iron Man 2
Little Fockers
Gulliver's Travels (Again probably being generous here; it does have the single worst scene I've ever seen in a cinema!)
The Book of Eli
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Get Him to the Greek
Saw 3D (Easily the worst of the lot!)

:*:
Alice in Wonderland
Clash of the Titans
