Call me radical, but I don't think we actually need a song. Lets be brutally honest, the last good Bond song was Goldeneye, and that was 14 years ago. All the title songs since then have been "meh" (TND, YKMN) to "Oh my God, I'm being raped in the ear!" (DAD, AWTD). They just aren't gettin it.
At the same time, David Arnold is doing some stunning things with the films scores. I say use some of his work. Lets go the OHMSS route and have a title piece of music instead of another awful song. I think the title songs are the one unnecessary relic of the past to survive the reboot. Lets go the whole hog and really move forward. The series is hitting heights it has never hit before with the new direction, lets keep going.
Having said that, I don't think for a second they'll consider it, but I think its the right way to go.
SO many generalisations, so little fact...
Tina Turner was NOT the last decent Bond song. That is opinion. Not fact.
ANOTHER WAY TO DIE was actually a very funky and contemporary sounding tune that aids the film perfectly. Whether it was like a 1967 classic Bond tune is irrelevant.
Although I agree that an instrumental theme tune could work. But it would not be something some would like. We are not in the lush age of Barry orchestrations any more.
I would actually say AWTD is detrimental to the film, as completely incongruous to it's tone. The lyrics jovially mock Bond, while Alicia and White scream, in mess of John Barry inflicted funk rock.
Though I wholeheartedly agree with your last comment. The scores desperately need to a breath of fresh air in terms of a new composer, to see how it fits Craig's Bond.
Though I won't mind a full blown instrumental of Arnold's "Inside Man" theme- definitely one of the best tracks he's produced... er sorry I mean "composed"....
I agree. INSIDE MAN is a cracking burst of Bond music - and particularly non-Arnold too.
I disagree on your thoughts on ANOTHER WAY TO DIE. The lyrics of Bond songs have "jovially mocked" Bond since the days of Matt Munro. They are are meant to be a sardonic homage to the man and his world. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER is about oral sex (check any interview with Don Black) and THUNDERBALL is about a man's near-erotic obsession with Bond. ANOTHER WAY TO DIE is far from detrimental to SOLACE. It is a song on the run. As is the film.
Well Zorin I have to agree with you in all aspects of this conversation/argument.
Going back to the start of it, I dont think there has been a BAD title song since Goldeneye in my opinion, although Madonnas song was fairly border line, I still managed to enjoy it, Garbage and Sheryl Crow did fantastic title songs.
I wasn't a huge fan of another way to die at 1st, but it defiantly grew on me, and now I quite like it. Alica's voice is a bit pitchy but its nothing horrible.
Chris Cornell's 'You know my name' wasn't short of amazing either. So from someone with the opinion that Goldeneye was the last decent theme song I can see why you don't want another one, I feel sorry for you.
