It was now eight in the evening and James Bond finally sat back in his chair and stretched, eyes red with weariness. Going through Roberto’s files on the Lap-Top Ysabelle had bought earlier from a shop on the Via de Vialle was dreadfully tiring to say the least.

He’d been at it for the past two hours now non-stop while the girl lay on her front on the bed reading a fashion magazine and he now felt thoroughly hungry.

Bond got up and crossed to the window opposite and lit a cigarette, his arm aching painfully, hadn't stopped in fact.

At least now though he had all the information he needed to get back on track. And the first person he would contact was a man called Giancarlo Berlucci, one of Roberto’s most trusted associates...

Comments on Chapters Eight and Nine--

Very satisfying use of the character of JS (with apologies to Dickens, we might even say he's "recalled to life"). I always thought he'd have made an intriguing character had he not met an untimely demise in Benson's story. Very interesting to see him use the name "Taro."

And, of course, it's a treat to see my namesake put in an appearance. I'm enjoying this.

‘Mr Berlucci? My name is Bond. James Bond. Roberto Grazianizi gave me this number and name to use if I required help.’
There was quite a long pause at that and which Bond had expected considering.
‘Unfortunately, Roberto is no longer with us,’ Berlucci told him finally.
‘I was with him when he was killed, Mr Berlucci.’
‘What is it exactly you want from me, Mr Bond?’
‘I’d like to meet you.’
‘You’re joking of course.’
‘On the contrary, I couldn’t be more serious.’
‘To end up in a ball of flames like dear Roberto? Mamma mia, the fool crossed the wrong people this time, Mr Bond, and I have no intention going down the same path as he.’
‘No harm will befall you, Mr Berlucci. I guarantee it.’
Again there was a lengthy silence, then,
‘Roberto told me you would call. I am what they call a ‘fixer’, Mr Bond. In other words I provide information and hardware – at a very costly price that is.’
‘Just the sort of chap I need then.’
‘In that case I hope you can afford me. You will come to my office in Strada Republica in the north district at ten thirty. Number 13. We will talk and see what you require.’
Bond nodded once.
‘I also need a safe house to lie low for a few days. Two at the most.’
‘That can be arraigned, Mr Bond. But now, if you will excuse my rudeness, I would like to catch another hour’s sleep perhaps. I’m sure you will agree that it is still rather early to be talking commerce.’
‘Ten thirty then.’
‘Oh and please, Mr Bond, do ensure that you are not followed by any members of the so-called opposition. I take my life very seriously I warn you.’
Bond raised an eyebrow at that last, and the man called Il Gattopardo, whatever the hell that meant, hung up...

...People were running all over the place, screaming at the top of their voices, some cursing, others yelling for help. It was panic and chaos and Bond quickly grabbed the girl and pulled her close.
‘The car,’ he shouted through the surging crowd.
‘Who was he?’ Ysabelle called out and a fusillade of bullets exploded the ancient stone of the Fountain of the Rivers behind them.
Three people stooped and their screams were horrific as they were struck by yet another blast of bullets...

Chapter 11 ended with an interesting 'twist', and your taste of chapter 12 only further whets the appetite.

...He tucked his chin tightly into his chest as the new assailant pounded into him and then Bond violently forced the top of his head into the assailant’s jaw, cracking it instantly.

Bond twisted free and as the assailant spat out a wad of blood and broken teeth from his shattered mouth, he drove the heel of his foot into the base of the man’s nose, breaking it instantly.

Bond darted up and looked around for Ysabelle.
There was no sign of her in this utter madness before him and his heart sank.

commotion, screaming, pain, total disorientation...

...Bond reckoned he must have weighed at least thirty-five stone, and as the man called Torosami Suliman turned towards them, his red eyes fixed onto him and there was desire in them, as if Bond was a beautiful present just waiting to be opened.

A cold chill ran down Double O Seven’s spine.

He felt physically sick then and almost vomited with sheer rage blistering inside him, overwhelming him completely.

And Yamada Nakamuro sensed this rage, could actually see the physical change taking place inside Bond. His golden eyes narrowed and he smiled that devil’s smile of his...

James Bond swallowed hard and his mouth had never felt so dry.
‘Don’t do this, Nakamuro!’ he hissed through clenched teeth but he could see that the devil was actually enjoying himself.
‘Please, don’t do this.’
Nakamuro shook his head in disparaging regret.
‘I’m not doing anything, Mr. Bond,’ he said. ‘This is all down to you, my dear fellow. Just give me the name and your companion will be freed.’
‘I told you for God’s sake! No one else has been assigned to your case other than me. Please believe me.’
‘You are a liar. But enough talk. You need a demonstration of my resolve and determination to get to the truth you are holding, Mr. Bond, and as much as it pains me to do this, I can only say that what follows now is all on you and you alone.’
He nodded once to Torosami Suliman who simply flicked his bulky wrist once and the whip struck like a lightning bolt between Ysabelle’s shoulder blades, slicing through her skin...
The girl screamed and her body swung like a pendulum in a paroxysm of absolute pain.
Again, the tip of the whip struck, slightly lower than the first one and the fiery pain burned deeper, dark red blood flowing through the torn skin, down the back of her neck and into her dangling hair.
Bond found himself turning away from the sight, trying to block out her screams…
‘Beautiful,’ Nakamuro said softly, his eyes not blinking once as he watched. ‘Simply beautiful.’
‘Damn you to hell, Nakamuro!’ Bond spat.
Nakamuro turned to stare at him, a disturbing look in his golden eyes as they burned into Bond’s own...

Hiya. My name is Harry. Harry Fawkes. Some people know me as simply Roger Mulvaney. No, I am not two people. I am one. Why am I writing this? I have no idea whatsoever. Am I mad? Most certainly, I must point out. Anyway, below is just a couple of extracts from my forthcoming Chapter ANGEL OF DEATH. You may not want to read them so as not to spoil the complete read when it comes out soon. Is all I can say is that consider these extracts as a simple taste of things to come but I assure you - the best will only be revealed in the whole chapter which I will not be pulling back on. In other words my dear gentle readers, the best is yet to come.

Anyway Mr Fawkes, cut the bull[censored] and gimme the money I hear you say.

Bond appetite, mon ami,

Julian Faulkes had heaved his way through the crowd, compelling the bystanders out of his way. He was tall enough to see over them but the more he pressed forward, the stronger the current of people pushed him back as the fight between Bond and the Japanese assailant built up before them all.
‘Move! Move out of my way!’ he shouted trying to get to Bond.
At some point, there came a rapid blast of bullets...

...Bond found himself turning away from the sight, trying to block out her screams…
‘Beautiful,’ he heard Nakamuro say, his eyes not blinking once as he watched. ‘Simply beautiful.’
‘Damn you to hell, Nakamuro!’ Bond spat.
Nakamuro turned to stare at him, a disturbing look in his golden eyes as they burned into Bond’s own...
‘Hell is now, Mr. Bond,’ he said. ‘And it is you who is damned, my dear fellow. Now please, be quiet and enjoy the spectacle.’...

...James Suzuki closed his eyes at the horrible thought of what they had done to that poor man but his mind focused on what they would do to him if they ever found out that he was an MI5 undercover agent himself. He recalled Major Tallon’s fine words of warning, just before he had boarded his plane several months ago.
‘Remember, James, just get close enough to insert yourself under their skin, that’s all...'

...When the phone rang in his office at MI6 headquarters, M was just about to leave for lunch at Blades with an old friend. Grudgingly, he picked up the receiver and listened, a look of shock appearing on his face.
‘My God, man! When the bloody hell did this happen?’ he said. ‘Why wasn’t I informed earlier…

...James Bond wanted to burst out of his body and through the glass window that separated their rooms and free dear Ysabelle from the brutal pain and torture she was going through at the hands of Torosami Suliman. Her screams for him to help and free her were driving him mad and again he tried closing his mind to it all...

Notes on Chapters Ten and Eleven:

These chapters give us three dialog sequences: Bond and Ysabelle, Nakamuro and Edwards, M and Moneypenny, and they're all nicely constructed.

It's possible, I suppose, to criticize a sentence or two here and there (and anyone who's read my posts on here over time knows that I'm no one to complain!), but the dialog stands up quite well. It's effective in moving the story along while, at the same time, illuminating the characters. In particular, the dialog in Chapter Eleven gives us a lot of insight into what makes Nakamuro tick (and isn't he loathsome!), and we also get a better picture of Midas Gold. The M scene is nice, too, though I'll point out that the old M's name was spelled "Messervy."

Thanks Major Tallon for your kind comments. I'm at present working hard on what I see as a blast of a conclusion to it all now.

Mind you, I've still a lot to go yet but I'll get there.

As for the way I spelt old M's name, I do apologize. I should have checked that one out (like the quote by Lord Alfred Tennyson!)
