Don't know why it's America rather than UK or Europe

Money. Basing it in America effectively gets us around twice the budget we would get in the UK.

thanks Ian for the reply. I guess it makes financial sense. Quite excited about the news. :)

Templar did spend quite a bit of time in the US in Charteris books.

Or do we still get sophisticated Brit abroad?

I would imagine this, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Wasn't there some noise that they were going to film the series in Canada?

James Purefoy has said that his Saint is ‘out to make mischief’.

I'll be happy if the Saint manages to make it on the airwaves.

amen

Looks like we are on the same page when it comes to Simon Templer B)

http://otr.net/?p=sait has a fair few old Saint radio dramas.

For info...that's about half the number of shows known to exist.

If you're interested in the Saint on the radio I ought to mention "The Saint Solves the Case", the latest batch of CDs from Radio Spirits. This one includes an unbroadcast pilot show from 1940 which features Denis Green as the Saint and includes an introduction by Leslie Charteris himself.

Dickerson - so you're saying that Simon being part of the Knights Templar has been ditched? Phew... And what about Purefoy? Since you seem to be in the know, why did he drop The Saint in favour of The Philantropist, something that seems to flow in the same kind of river, so to speak?

And BTW I read on the net about a script being included in one of the Sain't DVD packages (The Return of The Saint perhaps) called Prince of Darkness, where The Saint battled...vampires?! Could anyone tell me what that was supposed to be about?

Unless things get seriously delayed Mr Purefoy is unlikely to be picking up the halo. Indeed an offer is out to another well known actor to star as ST. As for why he dropped The Saint...well there were some political elements going on that I can't elaborate on here and now, but one day I really hope I can tell the story behind the making of this version of the Saint. There's more intrigue and double-dealing than in your average soap opera.

Prince of Darkness was a script written by Stephen Kandel for Return of the Saint that had the Saint smiting vampires and was considered by Messrs Charteris, Ogilvy and Baker to be unSaintly so never made it into production. A pdf of the sript is on Network's box set of ROTS.

Sorry to hear that James Purefoy is out now... Hopefully a good actor is given the part. It would be great to see this project start filming soon..

Scaramanga, the post you are quoting is over 2 years old, Purefoy is back on the project and it is *supposed* to start filming in New Orleans in July.

What do you think of Purefoy. I never seen any of his work. Do you think he's the answer?

I think he will be a little harder hitting Templar than Moore, Ogilvy or Dutton. He is a decent actor but I have not seen him in a ton of things, just The Philanthropist and Camelot.

I checked out his Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia....i/James_Purefoy

That picture of him in a dinner jacket; he kind of has a "George Sanders" quality to him. That's fine with me because I liked George Sanders as Templar. Maybe that's just me though.

Now lets hope he does well this time since we aare in dire need of a Saint by lack of decent rogues on the telly.

Respectfully, what telly are YOU watching? Seems to be nothing BUT rogues on TV lately....

...so much so, that I fear The Saint will be seen as a second-rate "me too" entry.

Burn Notice. Leverage. Hustle. White Collar. House. The Mentalist. Castle.

Kind of a crowded field, methinks.

I'm a fan of The Saint, both the novels and the show, although the movie starring Val Kilmer was not quite my cup of tea.

What I fail to understand is why haven't we got a "reboot/revive the fanchise" movie, or a new TV series.

Last I heard, they were close to move forward with a show to star James Purefoy, but it seems he dropped this project for something called "The Philantropist". Before that, a couple of years ago I had heard that RKO had a new adaptation of The Saint in New York (didn't even know that they were still around), but little more besides that.

Why hasn't this character been re-adapted for the screen? Simon Templar seems so perfect for it.

Don't the copyright holders quite know how to adapt the character, or is it some copyright issue by itself?

Does anyone have any idea regarding this - what adaptations have they attempted to lift off the ground, or why none of them has been realized so far?

Seems such a waste of a good character and ripping yarns.

Too bad Roger Moore's only cameo in the film was a voice-over in the last 20 seconds before the credits came up.

Purefoy's got a new drama series called Injustice coming up on ITV soon. He looks quite Saintly in that, judging by the clips they've shown.

I'll give Purefoy a try, if and when his Saint gets finished.

If true, this would be a shame as I believe Ian's book had a forward by Mr Purefoy.

In fact, has this book been released yet...?

I believe they're hoping to get it out by the end of next week; the delay apparently being caused by the (now moot?) new series content.

I was curious on the status of Ian's book too. I would like to pick it up soon. Just picked up The Avengers 50th anniversary book. It's top notch! Beautiful photos and a nice overview of the 60's seasons of the series.

Our local RTN (Retro Television Network) is playing the 1960's Roger Moore The Saint series weeknights now too!!!

: )
