The imdb is now listing Ron Shelton as director for the pilot...
I take it you concur with this bit of news. Any further news when this may actually begin filming?

Interesting asusmption. Should be some more details forthcoming in a couple of weeks or so...

This morning I looked at the 'IMDB states..' line and immediately wondered whether 'Ian states..' accordingly.
Figured, 'Bet he bloody doesn't...'
Carefree insouciance tempered with furrowed brows over lack of movement. There really is a furrowed brow of sorts. Although in this, there is a conflict marginalised by experiences of recent 'moving image' Saintly outings and their respective successes... or lack thereof.

You've been saying that for the last couple of years!

Well, I figured that if it was not true, you would not point it out to us. I guessed this is your way of telling us who the director is without actually "telling us"

The final product is almost a by-product.
Ian is probably a bloody marketing expert. 'Just enough to keep them wanting more. Every movement forward is a step equal to half the final distance, i.e you never actually get there.'
Kidding Ian. Best of luck...

I am, sadly, well aware that we've been here before and as always am well aware that this could still fall flat on its face before getting anywhere near a camera. However things are looking better than they have done in a long time and I'm once more optimistic about the whole project.
I only wish I could share some of the things that have been discussed but I'm not going to until I know for sure contracts have been signed.

Indeed, have we been anywhere else?I am, sadly, well aware that we've been here before and .....
And in this, I am certain you have demonstrated the best policy.I only wish I could share some of the things that have been discussed but I'm not going to until I know for sure contracts have been signed.

Thanks for the update Ian! Hoping we see a new Saint project get off the ground!!

I like Ron Shelton (Bad Boys 2 aside). The heroes in his sports movies always seem to display a sort of Saintly insouciance. Just as long as he doesn't cast Kevin Costner as The Saint!

I was just flicking through TCM's schedule to see if there's anything I feel like watching in the coming days, and on October 12th (that's this Tuesday) they're airing eight Saint films starting at 10am. Thought I'd pass this info along for fellow US folk.
cool, thanks for the head up. I have them on VHS but would like to DVR a nice digital copy of them.

And in the UK there is a current dvdrelease of the Saint's double trouble by Odean Entertainment with 2 other releases of George Sander movies expected next month namely Two Falcon movies.
Thanks for the tip on the RKO Saint films!!!
Has anyone heard anything further about the new Saint project? It's been a while...

A mild wondering as to when one can hear about the unfolding events...
Agreed. It would be nice to know what the actual plan is or if this is ever going to happen.

Aahh ! The Saint ! I love this TV show ! Not the first series in black and white but all the others.
I actually think the black and white episodes were the best. They were not as Bond influenced as later episodes were to become and they were adapted from Charteris short stories.

YES ! Most accurate.

Agree, I love the B/W series - still enjoy the colour series, but many of those (original) stories were weak, especially toward the end.

So, less cut and thrust and more mild mannered.
As for the later colour epiodes, yes there were far too many Bondian similarities where the Saint is flying Harrier jets and playing with the Gadget Makers. I think like we say (to lesser or greater agreement) Bond operates best in Europe, so too does the Saint operate best in London, and the later episodes really never had him in the capital if memory serves.

I would also agree. I really enjoy both the color and black and white episodes though.
The Persuaders, The Avengers, The Saint, The New Avengers... I've really enjoyed them all!
Return of the Saint was challenging to watch.
Is there any news or rumors about any of the above series coming to blu ray? I've been holding off on The Avengers. I saw the new UK Optimum DVD's but would really like them to be released on blu ray. I have the Peel series on region 1 DVD from A&E. My folks have the King years and a few of the Cathy Gale ones on DVD. Just finishing up the King series.
Sorry if this is going off topic from The Saint a bit!

I love The Return of The Saint! Well, I admit, some episodes are challenging to watch, but overall I enjoyed the series - especially Ian Ogilvy, who I thought made a great Saint. And I loved the location filming. That Venice episode was amazing!
I haven't heard of any of those series getting released on Blu-ray. There were rumors (and even an Amazon listing) that Optimum would do The Avengers on BD when they started doing these Special Editions, but they didn't seem to pan out. Perhaps it's still in the works. Doesn't seem like it would make much sense to release those early videotaped episodes in high-definition, though. I love the Optimum DVDs though! The special features are amazing, and the episodes look better than they ever have.
I think A&E has lost the rights to the series here in America, but I keep hoping that they or someone else will pick them up again now and license the Optimum features for Blu-ray release. A&E released The Prisoner and Space 1999 on BD; maybe they'll consider The Avengers or The Saint... Here's hoping!
I'd love to see The Persuaders! on Blu-ray most of all, because even the best DVD transfers to date have left a little to be desired, but I really doubt that will happen since it would require a lot of work for something I can't imagine would sell that well, unfortunately. But, again, here's hoping. Even more than that, though, I hope that Network somehow unearths the supposedly lost masters for Ken Thorne's score music and puts out one of their fantastic soundtrack sets for The Persuaders!...

Understood. thanks for the post! What episodes do you consider the best for Return of the Saint? I like Ian as an actor, but for some reason just can't seem to warm up to him as The Saint. I'll try and watch a few of them again though. I agree on location work for Return of The Saint. It really gave the show a much higher budget feel.
Hopefully The Avengers, The New Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders come to blu ray.

While they never did explore the criminal aspects of Moore's Saint, there were some insinuations as to his dubious life.unlike Roger's Saint who just drifted through life saving girls with little explanation as to how he bought his sportscar.

Hm, let's see... Besides Duel in Venice, I also liked The Village that Sold its Soul for the same reasons of a great location. The Poppy Chain was good, where Simon takes on the drug trade. I liked The Imprudent Professor, with Catherine Schell. (I tend to like things with Catherine Schell!) The Armageddon Alternative was pretty good, in which Simon has to save London from a mad bomber. It's been a while since I've watched these, so I'm afraid I don't actually remember them too well. There was one I remember really liking that culminates in Simon storming a castle (in an Eastern Bloc country) to save a girl being held prisoner there. I think there was also a rocket launcher involved in the attack. Was it Assault Force? It might have been, but I'm a little hesitant to recommend that one outright, because Assault Force could also be the episode I hated most, in which Simon assembles a mercenary team. But I think that one was Yesterday's Heroes, maybe...
I definitely don't like Return as much as I like the Moore series, but I still like it - particularly the location filming and Ogilvy himself. And the Jag.

The episode you are thinking of - the rescue of the woman kidnapped by the Albanian Secret Police - is actually THE JUDAS GAME, not ASSAULT FORCE. It was intended as the pilot, I think. Not a bad episode but not a very typical episode with Simon Templar doing "Saint" type stuff.
