God I HOPE HE WON'T BE CARRYING EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE. IT'S SO MUCH OF A CLICHE ON TV/MOVIE THESE DAYS. Sick to death of it. I hope it will be fun and easy. I don't wan't it to be graphic like Entourage but at least it should have the same vibe.

Never seen Entourage but you and I seem to be on the same page...

B)
Words can't describe my happiness. I am dying to see an adventurer/playboy on screen tackling bad guys and chasing women. The Entourage is about 4 guys living the high life in Hollywood. It is a bit graphic but for what it's worth it's not politically correct just trying to have a good time.

So what do you think? Cast an unknown actor or take a wellknown face like Paul Bettany or Ralph Fiennes for example and which age should he be

Casting an unknown is a longer process because there are more actors to consider, and of course it's harder to sell the product, but this method can yield an actor closer to the ideal. Well-known actors have a public profile already, making it easier to imagine and pitch to people, but this way is not without the potential pitfalls of typecasting, or fitting a likeable personality to a character. Anyway, according to Ian Dickerson they have got a well-known actor.

I would be willing to lay money that Dougray Scott is our man.

It is too bad that Purefoy left the project. Watching The Philanthropist, I have little doubt that he would have been an excellent Templar.

I had the misfortune recently to catch a programme in which Robson Green was fishing. He caught a fish and then danced around like a crab had nipped his nadgers. My first thought was what's with all the excitement? It's a fish. You have them with chips. My second thought was that fish would make a better Templar than you.

I guess whoever put his name up on www.saint.org has a sense of humour too. Wasn't you by any chance?

Someone I know recently set his digital video recorder to record that Robson Green fishing programme because the EPG shortened the name of it onscreen to 'Extreme F...ing with Robson Green'. Well, you would, wouldn't you?

And yeah- I think I'd be surprised if it wasn't Dougray Scott now.

Robson Green and his fish as Templar.

"Go an' nick me role wud yee fishy pet?"

Dougray Scott as Templar and his missus as Patricia Holm. As there's some debate as to whether Patricia will be British or more exotic European, ironically Claire Forlani could play either.

Oh I'm not saying it would be pleasant, but it would be one of those things you'd just have to witness out of curiosity!

Unless they're throwing us a massive curve ball I do believe Roger himself just gave us the definite answer:

James Purefoy isn’t the Saint, as his availability changed I’m afraid, but they do have a rather excellent actor signed up ... not sure if I’m allowed to say just yet, but his initials are DS.

Yeah, in response to a question about whether or not filming was still going to go ahead in Canada and he would have a small role.

Or Donald Sutherland, who is arguably rather inappropriate for the role but does bring with the quality of being alive.

As long as it doesn't turn out to really be Djames Snesbitt I'm happy.

A well in some sense the Saint did return to the big screen. In the movie Iglourious Basterds by QT there is a moment that the Jewish cinemaowner Shosanna is sitting in a cafe reading a book, which can be clearly seen is :Le Saint a New York.

I guess while waiting on the identity of the New Saint performer it is something.

I just wondered if the book has some meaning to QT whose movies always seem to have ideas beyond the story he shows. What does the man think of The Saint.

Does this mean that bringing back The Saint is all QT's idea?

Probably won't be any formal announcement for a week/10 days for a variety of reasons.

Which gives me time to get everything done.

Interesting. Right around the time I'd thought production might begin given Roger's "September" statement. Time will tell I suppose.

Slightly OT to recent discussions, but I ordered an omnibus-ish thing containing five Saint stories last night, and I'm a bit curious as to what fellow Saint fans think are the best of the lot. Stories contained are The Man Who Was Clever, The Lawless Lady, The Saint Closes the Case, The Avenging Saint, and The Saint vs Scotland Yard.

I'd also be interested in recommendations of Charteris' works. There seem to be two sets of collections currently around called 'The Best Of The Saint Volume...'. Any good?

I'd obviously highly recommend them because I put them together for Hodders but it depends what you're after.

If novels are your thing then go for titles like 'The Last Hero' (aka 'The Saint Closes the Case'), Getaway (aka 'The Saint's Getaway'), 'Prelude for War' (aka 'The Saint Plays With Fire'), 'The Saint in New York' or even some of the latterday stuff like 'The Saint and the Templar Treasure'.

If you'd prefer short stories go for 'The Brighter Buccaneer', 'Boodle' (aka 'The Saint Intervenes') or 'The Saint in the Sun'.

Hodders wouldn't let me include any novels in the compilations so we went with 'classic' Saint short stories and stories that suited Roger's Saint.

Ian

Ah, that must be the misnamed volume 'The Saint: Five Complete Novels'

Personally I'd probably favor Closes the Case and Scotland Yard a tad above the others, but it's quite close. They're all good early Saint adventures.
