The actor involved has a great and I'm sure you'll all be pleased."

Has a great what? I'm not sure, but I think Roger means he approves of the choice.

Still trying to work this one out. It occurs to me that this might not actually be a typo, and Sir Roger's comments might have been deliberately edited because he gave too much away about the new Saint's identity. For example, Sir Roger might have said that the actor involved has -

A great problem keeping it in his pants. (Jude Law)

A great big pair of man boobs like me. (Cary Elwes)

A great wardrobe of frilly knickers. (Eddie Izzard)

A great deal of trouble standing up on St Patrick's day. (James Nesbitt)

A great deal of trouble standing up on any day. (Colin Farrell)

A great amount of contempt for just about everything. (Hugh Grant)

A great capacity for putting stuff up his nostrils. (Steve Coogan)

A great passion for grannies. (Ralph Fiennes)

A great mop of hair like a bog brush. (Rufus Sewell)

A great collection of barbie dolls. (John Barrowman)

Isn't Val Kilmer still interested in returning then?

Wasn't he making positive noises about wanting to return as the Saint perhaps a year ago?

He did at one stage say he'd like to return to the role.

Put the fear of god into me that did...

Pretty much sure that the absence, all the delays and the shoooting in Canada are down to budgetary reasons.

Not entirely. The Canadian location is primarily driven by budget, though currently it is only the pilot that's contracted to shoot there. This project, having been so long in the making, has encountered all sorts of problems including, off the top of my head, the writer's strike, some staffing issues behind the camera, fun and games casting the leading man, script issues...

I'm not sure how much confidence there really is in the Saint concept - studio investment, potential committment (Purefoy's baling out?)- though I'm very happy to be wrong.

Since Sony and Insomnia Media came on board they have been nothing but supportive and keen for this to be done properly. Which is another reason why it's taken so long.

Putting the Saint back on the screen can't be easy. There are A LOT of cliched traps to fall into with the idea (viz the Moore, Ogilvy and Dutton versions).

Absolutely. But we've used the time wisely. We've re-read a lot of Saint books. And improved our concept of what a 21st century Saint would be doing.

That said, I am looking forward to the twist Ian Dickerson and those he is working with are able to introduce. B)

Are you saying we're twisted?!

Well. Actually, now you mention it...

Splendid - always a good idea.

And anyway, they are damnably good fun...

A great deal of trouble standing up on St Patrick's day. (James Nesbitt)

James Nesbitt is a Northern Irish Protestant......

Isn't St Patrick's Day a general celebration of Irish culture and not just restricted to a day of religious significance for Roman Catholics in the Republic?

Jamie boy loves this day and as a famous drinker has previous form to go by. In Edinburgh earlier this year -

http://74.125.77.132...y...=clnk&gl=uk

"The people are very friendly, the sun is shining and it's St Patrick's Day, so it couldn't be better."

Regarding the Chris Evans Radio Show and TFI Friday St Patrick's Day specials -

http://www.independe...itt-666491.html

"Two years ago I was booked to appear on TFI Friday in Dublin on St Patrick's Day. I took part on the Chris Evans Radio Show in the morning which was being broadcast from a bar in the Clarence Hotel. I had my first pint of Guinness at 8.30am and was booked to appear on TFI at 4pm. The rest is a mystery. I went on, but definitely not in a good state."

Sorry to go against the flow, but i just watched my first 2 black and white episodes of the Saint, and i loved them! To my surprise and delight "Arrow of God" also starred Anthony Dawson (Professor Dent-DN) and Honor Blackman (GF). "the Effete Angler" starred a really scrumptious Shirley Eaton (GF) and even the pilot from TB.
Roger Moore is in fine light-hearted form, the dialogue and scripts are polished, stock footage of the Bahamas is alluring, the sets and fashions look great - my missus has also enjoyed watching these and commenting on how elegant ladies and gents were back in the day.
I look forward to seeing more, i hope the standard stays high and more Bond alumni appear.

Glad you liked them Byron. I prefer the black and white episodes to the later color ones as well (the B&W were based on original Charteris stories). Throughout the series you will see quite a few Bond "alumni"

One Mary Goodnight appears in an episode of Return of the Saint, when you get to that series. Fortunately Ekland isn't playing such a moron in that episode...

Yes, I am able to tell you if it is one of the names;-)

Ian

It has, so does the Philanthropist.

Yeah but be fair. Both The Saint and Burn Notice have likeable heroes, whereas Teddy Rist is just an annoying rich B)--a "vigilante playboy" to quote the initial PR--who I'd really like to bring down to earth.

Stalled due to the current economic climate. I hope revived interest due to the pilot may unstall them...

The same question can be asked about James Bond, and he continues to outdo all the spoofs.

The Saint of course, is also not quite as popular as James Bond. I found out about the Saint via Roger Moore. Most people I know personally who are Saint fans found out in a similar manner. Only my uncle, who used to watch it on TV way back when, was not introduced to it via an ex-007. So really I don't think spoofs and things are doing much to hurt the Saint, since it's already not exactly the flavor of the week.

Oh gawd...I can witter on about this sort of thing for hours, but let's see if I can keep it short.

I think there will always be a market for a modern-day Robin Hood; one only has to watch the likes of Leverage and Burn Notice to see that holds true.

Why bother with the Saint when there's other heroes out there doing the Saint's job?

The Saint--and I'll charitably overlook the most recent 'interpretations'--has fun with his adventures. He doesn't rely on gadgets, does everything with style, and believes in the excitement of living. He's not hampered by the loss of a loved one, he's not traumatised by recent adventures, he's simply going out to have fun and right some of the injustice he sees in the world.

God I HOPE HE WON'T BE CARRYING EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE. IT'S SO MUCH OF A CLICHE ON TV/MOVIE THESE DAYS. Sick to death of it. I hope it will be fun and easy. I don't wan't it to be graphic like Entourage but at least it should have the same vibe.

So we agree that we want a new The Saint-Show. But in my opinion it will stand or fall with the new leading man, because with this much competition today he has to be very charismatic.

Malko is right. I will go further and say the chosen actor, director and writers, have to show the Saint is an extraordinary character. The longevity of the Roger Moore series is down, in no small part, to the uniqueness of Roger himself; so was his subsequent success as Bond. I agree with Leslie Charteris when he said George Sanders was miscast but, ironically, the motivation to watch those old movies, more than once, is principally due to Sanders’ sardonic personification of the role. If the new Saint is going to be a success, I think the latest actor is going to have to give an outstanding performance.

So what do you think? Cast an unknown actor or take a wellknown face like Paul Bettany or Ralph Fiennes for example and which age should he be
