I feel like Casino Royale only works if you buy into the love story. The whole third act hinges on it, what with Bond frolicking with Vesper on the beach and going shopping in Venice. Eva Green is extremely beautiful so Bond ending up with her is believable, but some of that dialogue is cringe-worthy.
SPECTRE managed to weave a more natural love interest into the story without making that the sole focus, and most importantly without making Bond out to be a lovesick puppy. They are simply two characters who share a similar pain and decide to go along for the ride as allies and lovers.
I feel like Craig's era is one of missed opportunities, but despite having some plot issues the tone of SPECTRE was pitch perfect. I wanted more of this, and less of what we actually got.
