Alicia Keys apparently "the winner" for Bond theme

She's okay but she falls prey to the same habits they all do in her musical world...why use one vowel in a word when nineteen will do?
I could be proved wrong and I hope I am on this one, but she does nothing for me and hardly fits with the tone of the film as envisaged in the teaser trailer.
But we could all be very surprised. At least she has a pair of lungs on her.

Garbage were 'edgy'(compared to Tina Turner and Sheryl Crow) yet they contributed a song for Brosnan's tenure as Bond and he was anything but edgy. We're far past the point where a song for a movie and the credibility of the singer (perceived or lack of) is an integral part of a movie's edginess (a word bandied around too many times).
There've been good Bond songs for entries most people don't generally rate as the best in the series (AVTAK being the most notable example and personally I like the YOLT song better than the actual picture as it gives the idea of a deeper film than the one we have). Ultimatley it's down to opinion as there are people who still don't rate YKMN as one of the best or 'radical' Bond songs (DAD is more innovative and it's complete dog[censored] IMO).
Fair points. As nice as it is to have a song that you/I/we might like it really doesn't affect the movie very much.
PS: Die Another Day is an example of where a dismal movie was married to a worse song (or is it the other way around...).

Her song, "Go Ahead" from the movie "Smoking Aces" sounds a little Bondish... Just needs the orchestra...

There is nothing "Bondish" about that song. And we are not in that world anymore. Bond songs do not need to sound "Bondish". We need to get away from the brassy, vampy torch songs. At least for now...

Not sure if I agree there. I think it is really necessary to have a distinctive song; something that's immediately recognizable, memorable, screaming 'Bond!' with the first few notes. That does not necessarily involve brassy stuff; not anymore in our time and age. But I'd love to get a song that's got a certain iconic potential to it. Something that lasts. Alicia Keys' voice would go a long way in that direction already, but first of all it would need a good song to achieve such iconic quality.

Phew, so many rumours about this title performer. I can't wait until an end is brought to all of this, and we get our answer! For what it's worth, I've always liked Alicia Keys, but I'm not sure this is exactly what the movie needs.
I think it needs Oasis, but have a feeling they are just toooooooooo cool.
I've a feeling they're just toooooooooo passé. Although, I believe my grandmother can recall a time when they were cool .
Still, better them than Alicia Keys, who is the very definition of dull, dull, dull. She is just what QoS doesn't need.

I pray that the producers, director and David Arnold are not so bloody stupid as to get some trash "artist" to do this song. The theme song will be vital for this film, to back-up everything they have been claiming they are doing with it.
Massive Attack would not be hard to get, nor Portishead or The Cinematic Orchestra...or someone else actually good. But these kind of people would suit this films vibe best anyway.

Alicia Keys is a far better suggestion than anything we've had so far.All of these names being mentioned are utterly ****!

The only way you'll see someone like Massive Attack is if they do something like fellow trip-hop group UNKLE and work in collaboration with a second artist. I think Massive Attack have been a little too experimental and electronic since Mezzanine, but if trip-hop is the way to go, UNKLE should be at the top of the list (they've worked with the likes of Richard Ashcroft, Matthew Bellamy and Josh Homme before). But I still think Muse or Radiohead would still be a better choice, with a "maybe" over the names Anthony Kiedis and James Hetfield simply because of their voices.Massive Attack would not be hard to get, nor Portishead or The Cinematic Orchestra...or someone else actually good. I agree with you. You make a good point there about the song having to "last". I think Cornell's effort will age well.
There's just something inherently naff about Alicia Keys. She looks and sounds far too produced. At least Beyonce has a presence amdist all that - a presence that is the old 'it' factor personified. But Keys....? No.

I'm not sure I want her for Quantum of Solace. There's absolutely nothing wrong with her. I dig her tunes. I'm just not sure if her tune is right for Quantum of Solace, since I want something... different. Not the same ole same ole.
I hope David Arnold just makes an instrumental tune...

In fact, he's already started writing the lyrics:
Tell me, will I find some Solace?
Tell me, Quantum, Quantum, Quantum
I thought I was on a promise
Then she went and topped herself...

For fun then...I know who it'll will really, really be: Rush
Okay, they're my favorite band, but not quite a Bondian sound.
What Rush tune (from their present discography) would you pick? Points awarded for considering lyrical theme as well as an appropriate sound.
Something for Nothing?
Camera Eye?
Spit it Out?

Maybe it's because I not a huge music person, but I just never get excited about Bond singers/theme songs. Of all the elements in the world of Bond, this is the thing that I'm least interested in. But I'm certainly in a minority here. People and press seem to obsess about this almost more than anything else.

That she's with Sony speaks volumes about the chances of her landing the gig.
They could do worse. For all the naysayers: Sony, having the marketing know-how, will realize that a "over produced" artist as you say Keys is, will certainly add a level of interest for the regular Joe Moviegoer that "edgier" artists would not.
I am 40-years old, and I don't recognize many of the artists being bandied about. Keys is one of the few who I do recognize and I know many people of various ages who love her work. Sony knows this and I'm guessing would push Keys to maximize the movie's appeal to a larger demographic.

I think folks obsess cuz in the past Bond songs have been superlative. That hasn't been the case for some time now, just nostalgia I think. I did think YKMN was close, certainly the best Bond song in quite some time, maybe Arnold can pull another rabbit out of his hat for QOS? That'd be nice.

Youtube MST3K Space mutiny to hear as tom servo puts it "Music Noramally heard at the day inn lounge at colombian heights"
Like i said insert odd humour as it seems people are taking the "who should sing the title song" a bit to seriously it's not like Alicia Keys is writing the movie. Then i'd get nervous.

Good choice. Safe, and a little boring, but good nonetheless. She's one of the best pop artists around these days.

My thoughts exactly.
Why not get someone interesting like Metallica? Let them write it and everything, I bet it'd be a great Bond song (I'm past the point where I care if it gets put in the movie or not by Arnold).

However, I do think Keys is talented enough that there's definitely hope for the best vocals since k.d. lang's Surrender. Still wish the powers that be wouldn't play everything so safe, especially considering that CR was a success because of the ways it shook up the formula.

Agreed (though I think CR's title sequence was the best since '67... I think YOLT is Binder's best effort). I really did love YKMN as a theme, largely because it was a refreshing change of pace. Maybe Keys could do something distinctive, though, rather than just another Bassey homage. This could go either way for me. I loved YKMN because it was the first rock Bond theme since '73 and went along with the best title sequence since '65. If they go back to dancing girls and guns to the tune of some pop song, I won't be happy.

Agreed. Keys is a decent choice, but I would like to see EON make a less obvious choice. There are a lot of great artists out there today, and while Keys is a good artist, there are others that I would prefer to have singing the title track. I know that I've said this a few dozen times recently, but I still think that Lindsey Buckingham would turn in a fantastic title track for QUANTUM OF SOLACE. To me, the title track should be fairly moody and introspective as a way of picking up from the end of CASINO ROYALE as far as looking at Bond's emotional state after losing Vesper, and that's truly where Buckingham has been excelling with his recent work. His song "Say Goodbye" from the last Fleetwood Mac album, with a bit of reworking, could have been something that would fit with QUANTUM very well. Plus (and this is just my opinion, and a bit biased as I'm a huge fan of his work) he's playing the guitar better than he's ever played it, and I'd love to see one of his guitar riffs over a Bond title track, and he'd be a good continuation of the style of music that Chris Cornell brought to the franchise with "You Know My Name".
Anyway, Keys is a good choice (if this is true), but there are several other artists that I would rather see get the job mainly due to my being a fan of theirs. But, Alicia Keys has had some good songs released in the last year or so, so I have no doubt that she would turn in a great Bond title track if she is the one that EON has chosen for the job.
