Quick question. I got several 007 Blu-Ray discs for xmas. How come Dr No and Thunderball come in a cardboard slip case, but From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and The World is Not Enough don't? Or have I just received Blu-Rays minus the sleeve? If so,is it possible to get a sleeve through MGM?

It's been a while, but when I bought my copies they all came with cardboard slip cases.

Perhaps MGM is dropping the cardboard cases on future releases.

Hoping the MGM sale is completed very quickly in January. It would be nice to finish out the James Bond films on blu ray.

I ordered all my Bond Blu-rays from Amazon about six months ago. Most came with slipcases, but a couple didn't. Very mildly irritating, and I can't be bothered to try to obtain the missing slipcases.

In any case, I don't understand why companies go in for slipcases at all. They're unnecessary and a waste of money and resources. In what ways does the existence of slipcases meet consumer demand? Anyone here able to throw any light on why so many DVDs, Blu-rays and even CDs that are packaged in what I believe are called jewel cases also come with slipcases?

Its beyond me. I dont really see the logic of putting a plastic case inside a cardboard case. Seems a bit redundant. I usually just throw them away except in the rare instance that the slipcase is actually something different than a straight copy of the plastic case.

I completely agree. I generally throw away the cardboard slipcases as well. It is really irritating when it comes to series like the James Bond series as it only takes getting one title without a slipcase to make the collection messed up.

On a more general Blu-ray note OMG my Blu-ray collection exploded over the Black Friday weekend, with Amazon selling a large selection of their Blu-rays for $7.99 I breached the 300 BD mark. Now, if MGM would get sold already and start releasing the rest of the Bond movies on Blu-ray.

I love slipcovers. Adds something to Blu-rays that 99% of DVDs don't have. Plus many, mostly from Universal, have a very shiny, polished look to them that you just don't get with the regular cover.

Agreed. It would be wonderful to be talking about the other films, that haven't been released by MGM yet, on blu ray, rather than debating the merits of the packaging...

Happy New Year!

I just got a new HD TV and a Blu-ray player recently and have been watching Bond movies like crazy. I have all 13 of the Blu-rays and have watched all the movies. I got the 10 pack from Amazon and rounded out the collection with The Man With The Golden Gun, Licence To Kill and Casino Royale. I too, am now patiently awaiting the release of the remaining 9 on Blu-ray.

I don't have too much of a problem with the packaging, except the more global issues with Blu-rays that they usually include minimal packaging such as no inserts, which in the case of Bond movies the Ultimate Editions all had, although they were unable to be retained in the actual slim DVD cases, I didn't mind that. I didn't receive any of the Blu-rays with a slipcase, although I saw them like that in the store.

I hope when the 9 remaining films are released on Blu-ray we get a box set as well, with the opportunity to get the box itself separate.

Agreed a box set of the remaining 9 would be nice. Don't overlook the SE of Quantum of Solace disc that is coming as well.

Until MGM / SPECTRE is sold I don't believe we will be hearing any more blu ray news for Bond.

I just ordered Goldfinger on Blu-ray and I was thinking about getting Dr. No and From Russia with Love on Blu-ray and was wondering for those who own these two films on Blu-ray is it worth it even if I already own them on DVD? Any help with this decision will be appreciated.

I wasn't too impressed with Goldfingers quality, actually. I watched it a few weeks ago. Sure there's a remarkable difference, but it's not that great. :/

DO IT! You won't regret it. Even if you own them in the UE editions. If you own them in any earlier format, there's no question.

I have all the Bond Blu-rays currently available and will not go back to watching these films on standard definition again. These transfers are that good. And the prices are unbeatable. I have no regrets for what I paid when they came out.

Well I should have mentioned that I own the single disc DVD's which doesn't include the special features so by getting the Blu-ray's I will get some pretty good special features, some in HD, and excellent picture quality. Thanks for your help Turn.

I think I do since I have a 32 inch Panasonic Viera and the Panasonic BD60 Blu-ray player and I know that the Blu-ray of 2001: A Space Odyssey looks amazing on this set up. Has anyone had any trouble playing From Russia with Love Blu-ray on the BD60 since I have heard some have on other players?

Glad to help as I am very enthusiastic about the Blu-rays. I thought the UEs were the last word in Bond on DVD, but was happily proven wrong.

If you like special features, you are in for a treat. Let us know how you like them.

I also have all the Bond on BLu ray (as well as UEDVD) and even though I really want to watch OHMSS and TLD, I am going to wait for the BLu Ray. I just can't watch a DVD the same way again. Dr. No is AMAZING on Blu Ray.

I'm surprised by Harkers disappointment with Goldfinger, I thought it was significantly better than the DVD (but still think I am most impressed with Dr No).

I will check out my FRWL Blu Ray this weekend on my Panasonic BD60. It played fine on my old Samsung 1400, but have not yet tried it on my Panasonic (but have not had any problems with any movie on my Panasonic).

I am sure it will work since the Panasonic is a great Blu-ray player and I think most of the problems occurred when it first came out in late 2008 so by now I would think all Blu-ray players should handle it.

My Blu-ray player does a fab job of "upcoverting" standard def DVDs, so I decided to only get my favorite Bond pics on BD. (... The double and triple-dipping has to stop somewhere!)

As of now I have GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL, LICENCE TO KILL and the two Craig pics on BD, and will likely pick up DR. NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE at some point. (Also need to get THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS when it's eventually released on Blu.)

Yes ditto, I am not watching any more UE's of my favourite Bonds at least, which includes TLD. I will wait for Blu-ray, even if it takes a while for them to be released.

In agreement with most I am forgetting about Standard Definition as far as Bonds are concerned. Even though my DVD is a top of the range player, outputting a very high picture quality, my much cheaper Blu-ray player supersedes it with noticeable improvement on picture and sound. Films look like they were shot on film with BR.

I recently watched Goldfinger on Blu-ray & would agree that it is much better than the DVD. The one scene that comes to mind is after Bond leaves Miami & he is in M's office getting yelled at for borrowing Goldfinger's girlfriend. The texture & weave of the fabric in Bond's jacket is clearly visible. It's these little details that just make me not even bother watching the DVDs again.

I own the Deluxe CR blu-ray boxset, simply because I thought it would be pretty much the last version of CR available (not including repackaging) for a good 5 years. I haven't yet bought QOS on blu-ray as I think I can wait for the special/deluxe edition which will hopefully come out either this year or next year.

I've got to say though, this double-dipping malarky does get on my nerves: I got the Star Trek (2009) blu ray for Christmas and, in it's first edition, it has over 2 hours worth of extra features plus multiple commentary tracks. I would have thought that it was possible for MGM/Sony/Fox to have been able to include this amount of extras on the first version of the QOS DVD and blu-ray (if Paramount did it in 6 months then it must be possible - actually, on a side note, I noticed that the first and only edition of Indy IV was also stuffed full of extras - Paramount seem to be much better at producing DVD extras these days).

Mine too. Thats why I am very liberal in what I get on Blu-ray and iTunes HD. Currently Goldfinger, which I have not received yet, is the only Bond movie I will own on Blu-ray but I do have the iTunes HD versions of Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace (I had a lot of instore credit and had to buy something). However, I am pretty sure I am going to get Dr. No and From Russia with Love because even the iTunes HD versions I own show that older movies can really benefit in the HD format and since these are a couple of my favorites I would want them in the best quality plus I have heard that these two especially Dr. No are pretty close to demo quality for a classic release.

I notice here in the UK, HMV are selling a multi region Blu Ray player, for just £49 (albeit, it's an unheard of brand).

Tempted to get it, then I can import NSNA, TMWTGG and LTK, as well as other US only Blu Ray flicks.

You will be blown away at the GF Blu Ray and probably want to upgrade your itunes HD movies to Blu Ray. Provided your TV is 1080p capable, the Blu Ray HD is significantly better than the I Tunes HD (which if I recall correctly is 720p, not 1080p).

for me i love my blu-rays to death and as much as all of you do but, the wait is killing me, i really need to see goldeneye, and on her majesty's secret service on blu-ray, two of my all time favourite bond movies, along with cr/ qos, frwl, dr. no, fyeo and gf.

and yet the pain is excruciating, just the thought of those two in limbo irritates me incredibly.

when do you guys estimate mgm will be bought, apparently they just set a date so theres an end in sight.

Well I don't plan on upgrading the movies I own in iTunes HD since my TV is only 720p and the difference between Blu-ray and iTunes HD is not as big as say on a 1080p TV at a larger size but when I do upgrade my set up in the future I will definitely upgrade these titles to Blu-ray. In fact I don't think I will be getting any more movies in HD from iTunes since the price is just too high for me for the value of them compared to a Blu-ray and since I do plan on getting a external Blu-ray drive for my computer in the future there is really no reason for me to buy from them unless its not available on Blu-ray like some of the Bond titles I have bought from iTunes. The funny thing about my set up is that I used to have a smaller TV, a 26 inch Samsung which I bought a couple of months ago, but the speakers went bad but I was able to return it and I ended up getting a 32 INCH Panasonic Viera for $50 cheaper than what I paid for the Samsung and I wanted a Viera to begin with but it was just too expensive then but not now. Oh, and I will be getting a $10 gift certificate from Best Buy reward zone in about a month for purchasing it from them which I will probably use on some more Blu-rays!

I was reading the forums over at thehometheaterforum.com and the owner of the site met with 20th Century Fox in mid December and asked them about the status of Bond Blu-rays and got some info but unfortunately he could not say on the forum so he tried to contact someone at Fox to confirm but couldn't. So, he contacted MGM via an email and they responded by saying they promised an update later this week in order for the statement to be official and not rumor.
