Just curious: does anyone have any of these 2008 centenary hardbacks that are other than a first edition/first printings (essentially, anything other than the "1" on the copyright page)?

It seems like they just did this single printing on all 14 of the books and that was it. Out of print.

I think you are right Qwerty. I checked out some of these at a bookstore today and they were also firsts.

If that truly is the case and there's only one edition ever made, then it may be a good idea to snap them up as they be quite rare one day.

Indeed. :(

It's nice to a see a recent full set of the Fleming hardbacks being available. It's near impossible to come across any of the UK 2002 Penguin/Viking ones on eBay or similar sites.

Interesting thing I noticed at indigo.chapters.ca today. Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Diamonds are Forever (the ones I hadn't purchased) were 'unavailable' until today it seems. When I performed a search for all 3, the results were 'in stock'. I'll think I'll give them a ring just to make sure this is accurate.

I'll give an update later this evening. If this proves to be true, then my hardback collection can finally become complete.

lol, when I got back to the site a couple of hours later, they were sold out. I'll have to be quicker next time.

No kidding. I did order Live and Let Die and Diamonds Are Forever at least. It's beginning to look as though the very first Bond novel, Casino Royale, will be the last one I purchase.

Don't know if this was brought up earlier, but there's a great interview with Michael Gillette at FaceOut Books about designing the Bond covers, as well as his Casino Royale concept art.

Here's a snippet.

I was approached by the designer Jon Grey, he sent me the image of the original 1967 Casino Royale film poster which has a lady's back/type clash. He asked if I was interested in doing a project along these lines, I didn't know initially that it was actually for Bond. Once that was established I was all up for it, I did a quick sketch, it's got the right attitude.

...

From this first version, I was asked to do a more finished version which they were happy with, I'd drawn it in pencil but I felt it was lacking something, they asked me to finish another 3 on a trial basis. I did them in watercolour, and they had a much warmer vibe about them. right at the end I re-did Casino Royale and it's probably the slickest of the lot.

After deciding not to get this set when they came out (because did I really need them or the nagging from the gf over why I have the same book more than once?) I have since relapsed on that decision and snagged the lot. Not at bargain basement prices but for around £10 each not too bad I feel and I don't think they'll be the easiest find in years to come.

I love the jackets although they all exhibit small blemishes due to the whiteness and delicate paper - but I guess I should try not to get too OCD about it!

But I digress. These books were NOT a single printing. if they were they would not still be readily available at Waterstones or Amazon now. I decided to order a couple from Amazon and whilst some had the expected '1' on the copyright page low-and-behold some had a '2' instead. Upon further inspection the second edition also comes with a second state dust-jacket...
On the reverse of the 1st editions it says 'Centenary Edition' at the top. On the second edition it replaces this text with 'First Published [insert year]'.

I imagine true 1st editions of this set will become more difficult to track down as the later editions proliferate the market more as the years pass by.

Thanks for the update, BrozFan. I'm surprised there was a second printing of these, but am glad I managed to snag a complete set of first editions. I love my Centenary set (though I am OCD enough to realise how easily-blemished the dustjackets are) and don't ever see myself replacing them with a better one in the future.

Thanks for the update, BrozFan! Guess that makes these 1st printings a bit more collectible then.
