Was in Borders yesterday and saw these on the shelf...

Was told that Casino Royale is already out of print. Probably because of the movie.

I saw these listed a month or so ago and have held off reporting on them. My own opinion, but I think there some sort of error listings.

They had similar listings for all the Fleming books back in June '08 too (can be viewed here) and nothing ever came of them. They were listed for pre-order and then eventually listed as Currently Unavailable.

Not sure what the deal is...

As I expected, these 15 September listing are all categorized as "Not in stock; order now and we'll deliver when available" now that the supposed release date has passed.

I have a bit of extra cash coming my way next week, so I treated myself today to all 14 hardcover editions (which are disappearing fast and cropping up on eBay at extortionate prices) and the Penguin Centenary Collection box set (with Fahey artwork). Now I have what, in my view, is a definitive hardback and paperback set (living room display worthy!) of the Fleming books!

We just moved into our new house in October, and a gift we got from some friends was a beautiful antique cabinet with glass-fronted doors. My wife happily told me to use it for my Bond collection, and I promptly lined its shelves with all my Bond and Fleming related books. Included is my complete set of these hardbacks, lining the top shelf next to my complete set of Faheys, and my incomplete set of Fleming and Gardner first editions. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the covers of this new hardback set, but they've grown on me, and I'm really glad I snatched them all up when they became available.

Nice.

When I move into my new place, my living room set will consist of these hardbacks, the Fahey paperbacks, the UK Devil May Care hardback, the Moneypenny Diaries hardbacks and the Young Bond Limited Collectors editions. I might also include a couple of my literary reference books - James Bond: The Man And His World and For Your Eyes Only: Ian Fleming + James Bond.

At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the covers of this new hardback set, but they've grown on me, and I'm really glad I snatched them all up when they became available.

They do look nice as a set on the shelf. I'm trying to figure out whether I'll display the Fahey set in the box or not. I like the image of Vesper, but the books look great all lined up.

Good for you, mate. I was told that Casino Royale was already out of print, and I've yet to see it whenever I've come across the set in a book store.

I snagged my Casino Royale from Fishpond.com.au. The other 13 books I got from Chapters Indigo.

I see. It would have to be the only way to get the whole set. It would be really nice if these were available as a box set. They are a lovely collection.

I just got these in the mail - I had ordered 13 of the 14 excluding Casino Royale since that is unavailable right now. These are great looking books - my only thoughts are:

1) The font size is massive, too big I would say. As a result the books are very thick - more than twice the thickness of the trade paperbacks.
2) The dust jackets are made out of paper, which I prefer the feel of but will be next to impossible to keep clean.
3) Not crazy about the binding.

Other than that very happy to have them in the collection. Anyone else who has purchased these books have any thoughts?

Not too shabby.

I was really hoping the hardbacks would be coming to the states, sadly I guess I'll have to go without.

Which truly isn't fair. If the UK, Canada, and the rest of the world can have access to the hardbacks..then why not North America?

I haven't tried this, but I imagine that we in the States can order from Amazon Canada? I checked prices earlier and they are listed pretty low compared to eBay.

I they are about $15 each right now- a great deal compared to the paperback price. I wonder how they are on shipping? Check it out, The real008.

I'm tempted to do the same (as I am by the First Edition Library set I recently spotted), but may stick enjoying the stories on a budget. I do love the pb covers, though I believe the actual paper quality of a hc set is ultimately preferred. I think they will weather age better.

Glad you're happy with the purchase, whaleman! :(

1) The font size is massive, too big I would say. As a result the books are very thick - more than twice the thickness of the trade paperbacks.

The font size is pretty large, but it makes the books feel weighty and substantial, so I guess it evens out.

2) The dust jackets are made out of paper, which I prefer the feel of but will be next to impossible to keep clean.

I love the feel of the paper. Again, it feels quality. Hope they'll stay clean.

3) Not crazy about the binding.

I hadn't noticed that - is it a bit flimsy?

Most hardcover books you can open and the pages will stay open....this you have to hold the pages apart with your fingers. Not a huge deal. I just found Casino Royale today, thankfully now the collection is complete.

Just curious: does anyone have any of these 2008 centenary hardbacks that are other than a first edition/first printings (essentially, anything other than the "1" on the copyright page)?

It seems like they just did this single printing on all 14 of the books and that was it. Out of print.

I think you are right Qwerty. I checked out some of these at a bookstore today and they were also firsts.

If that truly is the case and there's only one edition ever made, then it may be a good idea to snap them up as they be quite rare one day.
