Part of what made the first two films so great was Eddie's quick fire improvisation. Is he still up to the task? He certainly wasn't in the third film, and that was fifteen years ago! At any rate Reinhold and Ashton are definitely needed, Pinchot and Reiser probably aren't vital but would certainly be welcome.

What kind of money are they expecting for this anyway? In his day Foley outgrossed Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Indy, Rambo, Bond and others, but he doesn't have the same iconic value. BHCIII grossed about a sixth of what the first film made.

In all honesty ths first film is the only decent one, alongside Trading Places & 48 hrs as the only really great movies Murphy ever did.

The 2nd one does not hold very well, it's a lacklustre retread and the less said about Landis's 3rd entry the better.

The fact that hack Ratner has become attached has sealed the fate of this film already, the world does not need BHC 4 and the box office will prove that when it's released.

It's like Ghostbuster & Gremlins great introductory movies followed by utter gash both GB 2 & G 2 are awful shadows of their predecessors.

I've love to see EM make a comeback...but my gut instinct tells me this one's more likely to be Beverly Hills Copout.

Who worries about little things like "continuity"?

Certainly not Hollywood!

I'm cautiously looking forward to this one--.

They are going have to explain because he was not in the last film at all. I am pretty sure of that.

Divorce = BHC4

Good luck Axel.

He is desperate. When was the last good movie that Murphy made?

Long before his Spice Girl shagging shenanigans!

Eddie Murphy's last good movie was Bowfinger.. That was about 10 years ago almost.. but the chemistry he had with Steve Martin was brilliant..

Despite the criticism of Beverley Hills Cop III, I found it to be good fun at Wonderworld. That said, I hope to see the edginess Axel displayed in the first two present in the next movie.

I think he and Martin clicked but I didn't care too much for the film.

Calling him desperate is a little unfair. His films in the last decade have left much to be desired, but he has been a pretty consistant moneymaker. Yes, yes I know Pluto Nash etc., but a lot of his films have been hits, deservedly or not.

They're mildly amusing films to me, but only as background television. I'd never buy any of the DVD's. I've always found the whole Axel Foley character a bit of a one trick pony. It's fun to watch him blag his way into a warehouse or something, but that's about it for me.

Hang on to your hats or breakfast maybe, fellas. . . At one of the movie blogs, I read a quote supposedly from Ratner saying he's planning on making this one much more of a kid friendly film! He's said 10 and 12 year olds are too young to remember the original BHC films, he wants them to have the same feeling he did seeing the movies back then. But apparently he was 15, not 10! I saw the movies when I was fairly young, we're talking I remember seeing movies as far back as four and five years old. I saw lots of movies growing up, it didn't matter if it was 'kid friendly', we were going to see a movie! It enriched my scope, and gave me a look into worlds I'd have never seen if my parents stuck to the likes of ET or whatever else was out at around then. My movie tastes were shaped forever because I saw lots of wonderful films that may have been too bloody, violent, sexy, scary, maybe all of the above for a child. My parents took me to see Highlander when I was 7! And I saw the Moore Bonds too!

All I can think of is if they are making the film for kids, it will be louder, obnoxious, with an annoying kid thrown in.

I'm hoping this is some horrible internet rumour, that Ratner never said this, because it just makes me roll my eyes. It's unnecessary. Adults buy movie tickets too, if it weren't for them there wouldn't be a BHC series.

I've already grown convinced:

The one thing that could make this movie rock will not come to pass: if we had a middle-aged, establishmentarian Axel--humorless and beaten-down--reconnect with his inner lost badass self...what a treat that would be.

I know Murphy could pull it off. But I'm convinced he's sold his soul to a horned devil named Disney.

Yeah this is pretty much going to suck. I smell another Blues Brothers 2000-esque disaster coming on.

And they'll probably cast Ben Stiller as Det. Roosewood.

This news smacks of desperation on Eddie Murphy's part.

I quite agree. EM is just looking for a mortgage payment- the movie will not be good (IMHO). Too much time has passed, he's not as funny as he used to be- he's more serious now for some reason- maybe Daddy Day Care put him in foul mood?

this is great news, only if they can make it similar to the first two movies of the franchise, or at least as funny and entertaining as they were.

Apparently Eddie Murphy has no interest in doing BHCIV:

Why do I have a feeling he is just saying this to get a fatter pay cheque ?

Hmm interesting news Mister E... I just hope Eddie Murphy does go ahead with Beverly Hills Cop IV for not only having a chance to redeem himself for how horrific BHCIII was, but also since Meet Dave looks truly pathetic and Cop IV might be his last chance at a big blockbuster movie.

I saw that bit on a movie blog. He says he wants to go back to doing his stand up. To me that sounds like a good idea, I miss that Eddie Murphy.

It could be a scheme to get a nice big pay cheque too. We'll see how Meet Dave does. They put the trailer with Get Smart, no one laughed at Meet Dave.

Also I'm glad the director for BHCIV debunked the whole 'making for 10-12 year olds' rumour. I was horrified by the very thought. He did say they're going make BHCIV and with Murphy, who knows. . .

Eddie Murphy really is long past his peak. He is more of a sell out these days. I'll watch BHCIV just because I saw the past three but I doubt it would be that good.

Yesterday we ran an article that suggested Eddie Murphy might be retiring - and therefore squatting “Beverly Hills Cop 4″ (supposedly filming next year) before it even gets in front of a lens.

Seems Murphy was pulling his leg - pulling something anyway - when he said that, because he is indeed still locked into doing another Axel Foley adventure.

The comic superstar tells MTV that as long as it’s done right, he’ll definitely be back. But more so, he wants to do another one “Because the third ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ was horrible!” Murphy laughed. “I didn’t want to leave it like that. The first two were cool and the third one was sh—y. [Let's] get the franchise fixed again, clean up this old mess and do a good movie.

“[Don't] just leave Axel with his thumb up his a– from the last movie,” the comic continued, chuckling. “Whatever happened to Axel Foley? He’s sitting in Detroit with his thumb up his a– since ‘Beverly Hills Cop III.’ Let’s take those thumbs out and make a great movie!”

In addition, Murphy seconds director Brett Ratner’s statement that the film should be a Hard-R with oodles of cuss words.

“I’ll tell you what about profanity,” Murphy said. “Over the last 20 years or so, because of the studios, everybody figured out there’s a PG-13 audience, you know, and that’s the biggest piece of the pie. And a bunch of artists, myself included, got put in this PG-13 box — artists that aren’t PG-13 artists! Then comedies like ‘Superbad,’ ‘Knocked-Up,’ and ‘Juno’ come out and people go, ‘Oh, this is the brilliant sh–.’ And it’s just people acting like real people, talking like real people. And those movies are making all the money now.

“Get back to the real sh–,” he added, regarding what he most wants for Foley. “That’s where I started. [Be] a real person!”

Murphy says he’s yet to see a script.

Thanks Agent 76! Though I think Murphy should do some stand-up he needs another 'Raw'.

That said, if he's on board for an R rated BHCIV that'll work for me! He needs to get away from Daddy Daycare, and Klumps, and Donkeys. He's not Bill Cosby, he needs to be the Eddie Murphy we love. If done well BHCIV could be a huge hit for him.

Don't forget the pet talking dog.

Hey wouldn't it be just GREAT if the pet talking dog farted alot?

Only if:
1) The dog is CGI enhanced to look a bit like Murphy.
2) Murphy provides the voice and uses the b word a lot.
3) The farts come with happy endings that end up in various amusing places, like on dinner plates and cups of coffee.

Eddie knows that the money is in those types of films. That's why he still does them. As for BHCIV, like I said I'll watch but Eddie is past his prime.

I notice the posters tout "Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in Meet Dave". Unless he plays himself in the movie it should read 'Eddie Murphy as Dave in Dave in Meet Dave". Shouldn't it?

Well see, Eddie Murphy plays a captain of a spaceship that looks like Eddie Murphy.

No I havent seen the movie, but I do this useless piece of knowledge.
