Got mine yesterday. Even if it is short, it is worth reading. The story plays in September 1956 in Royale-les-Eaux. There are some references to the Fleming stories. It is another nice touch how the relationship between Moneypenny and Bond could have been (or maybe was?)

I think the answer to that is "women" (I'm not sure it's any more specific than that). I mean, the covers appear designed to be female friendly (you can't sell a man a pink book), they run this story in a woman's fashion mag...women. Thing is, these stories require a working knowledge of Fleming and dabble heavily in the history of Cold War, which seems to be more a male thing...so...yeah

Just gave it a read. It's a good little story. Kind of sexy even. It reads as a bit of a Bond pastiche, but maybe that's the idea. Fun.

Thanks for the alert on this second story, Zencat. It's even shorter than the first, but an amusing little read that tells a "007 origin" story its own. Perhaps they're spreading these stories about to take advantage of the publicity surrounding Casino Royale's release and raise the profile of the Westbrook series.

I also had problems with registering, but I found that if you open the spectator site in a new window, instead of inside the CBn frame, then the log in will work. Hope this helps!

I think it's the issue with a cartoon of Bush getting the boot (hehe). As it's a weekly mag, so I don't know what week this was. But my understanding is the story appears inside a special Bond supplement that came inside the mag (which might be loose?). This could be a very tricky one to find.

The magazine is for the week beginning 11 November 2006. I believe newsagents start stocking them on the Thursday prior, in this case th 9th. The magazine is dated the 11th. The Bond stuff is in a seperate pullout magazine inside.

The Moneypenny story is plausible. As I said in my review of "For Your Eyes Only, James", the Westbrook Bomd is not Fleming's brooder but an absolute charmer: this need not be hugely contradictory - I suspect charm probably works better with women the brooding (other than for Brando and James Dean). I think the concept of the off-duty Bond being a pleasant charmer works fine. What Bond does is this story is not unlikely...

On the continuity contraditions (my favourite bit), no date is given for this story but Bond is literaly just a 00. Using the FRWL info, this would make it 1950 (Bond orders a 1948 champagne). Then again, M has a SMERSH file brought to him at the end: I wonder if we're meant to believe this is about Le Chiffre. M is M, Moneypenny just his P.A. Sure, this contradicts the Westbrook timeline even (in the Diaries, M is not M at this time and Moneypenny not out of Kenya). I do suspect Ms Westbrook is onto US and pulling OUR leg. Oh yes, it is two days after Bond knocked off the chap in Stockholm working for the Germans (ref CR): were MI6 secretly knocked off ex-German agents after the war? Suppose Germans could mean EAST Germans...

If you want an idea of what forms "Connoisseur's Guide to Bond" try these classics;

Dylan Jones of GQ fame comments on Roger Moore's safari suits in LIVE AND LET DIE...
Mr Jones also remarks about George Lazenby's moment of fame in OHMSS when he smashed his SOLID GOLD ROLEX in a villain's face. Now I have seen various versions of OHMSS but I've never seen this part Perhaps we need doudblenoughspy for clarification.

And finally, and most disappointingly, Charlie Higson refers to Tim Dalton as the PC Bond. Now call me argumentative, but in Margaret Thatcher's Britain in 1987 I don't think the expression PC would have occured to anyone... I think Mr Higson is perhaps confusing the North London dinner parties of the early 1990s which spawned New Labour with a completely different decade. Charlie also characterises Tim as a non-drinking Bond to support his PCness (no vodka martinis then, no bourbon with Felix ) and a one woman Bond (yes, Lupe was clealy not a woman). These are the kind of general mistakes the lousy journalist and non-Bond fan makes: I'd expect better of Higson.

I had the same problem here in Germany. The magazine was only without the supplement available. They told me, they were never included.

I hope you've been able to read Higson's article in it. Apart from some curious factual errors on the Dalton era, it's truly splendid, insightful stuff that makes clear that the Higmeister really knows and loves his Bond.

Seeing that it's been about a year since the original release, this probably isn't going to get any easier tracking that one down. I was lucky enough to find a copy of the UK magazine at my local Borders (and I live in the US), but I also seem to recall seeing one listed on eBay at one point. You may want to try there.

A little request about the short story "For your eyes only, James"; In short - My scanner/printer has broke down and wonder if someone has it scanned and want to share it to me. My intentions is to translate it (to swedish) and I want it as a word-document (OCR) for practical reasons.

Like others, I've been able to find the Spectator story online, but can't find "For Your Eyes Only, James" anywhere. So I've been trying to see if I can find the 11/06 Tatler on a site selling back issues.

It's occurred to me, however, I may not even know what this particular issue looks like, or whether it's the UK or US version. There is a photo of a 11/06 Tatler at this link...

...but if you enlarge the photo you can clearly see it is the US version. I was under the impression the story was published in the UK version. Could anyone out there clarify? If it is the UK version, could you let me know who is on the cover or - even better - provide a scan of that cover?
