get what this series is? Is it a proper Bond story? Doesn't seem to be. Is it a Bridget Jones thing? Is it a romantic story? Who is the audience for these stories?

I think the answer to that is "women" (I'm not sure it's any more specific than that). I mean, the covers appear designed to be female friendly (you can't sell a man a pink book), they run this story in a woman's fashion mag...women. Thing is, these stories require a working knowledge of Fleming and dabble heavily in the history of Cold War, which seems to be more a male thing...so...yeah
