Mr. Barry has made such an amazing contribution to the Bond legend and to cinema as a whole, that whenever he has an opinion I'm inclined to listen and respect it, even though I may not always agree.

I agree with that, we must always listen to experienced people like him, even if we don't agree.

Did he ever say what it was like to work with Duran Duran and a-ha???

A few years ago, Radio 2 here in Britain ran a series on John Barry's career, including interviews with the man himself. I remember him saying that he enjoyed working with Duran Duran. Unfortunately, he said that A-ha's disorganised and shambolic working style was too much for him, and he didn't enjoy the experience at all!

Mmmm...I think I read someone else on here saying that. I can't even imagine Barry in the same room as these 2 bands. It's a bit like imagining when Tom Jones met EMF before singing with them.

Or the first meeting between the KLF and Tammy Wynette!! I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall back then!

As for whether life was better in the past, I for one am grateful that I grew up in a Britain free from health and safety facism, never-ending school tests, and yob infested streets.

You mean you don't accept Mr. Blair's assertion that we're now living in the sunny uphills of a New Labour Utopia? You do realise that another few years of this administration and even expressing a thought like that will have you banged up in the Tower for treason? (although you could probably buy your way out if you've got a few grand to "donate" to New Labour)

I think the (rough) words from the man himself (I seem to recall from the concert he did in 1999)

Duran Duran was a great collaboration. John Taylor knew more about my music than I did, the chords and progressions. That theme was terrific fun to make. A-ha however, that was like playing ping-pong.

I also recall watching a Bond music documentary where Barry praised Arnold's work on the Shaken and Stirred album, saying he got the point of it. Of course, later (probably around the time of DAD), he was saying that most of the music was drowned out by sound effects and was disjointed noise with little continuity "it's like they don't give a damn about the music anymore". He may come over as old and grumpy, but he also has a point and feels passionate about it. If only more in the film industry shared his passsion, rather than just "making profits" - we may end up with better films! :)

Interesting. I seem to remember him mentioning that he was really put out by the Propellerheads version of 'OHMSS'. Then again, he seemed to be having a pop at 'Millenium' as well in an over-all complaint about sampling other's work and that they hadn't really done anything original, so I could sort of see his point. Even if I do think the Propellerheads tune is top banana.

Going back to Surrender, it's not that it's explicitly parody, per se, it's just that it's the type of Bond theme everyone expects. (Un)fortunately from Austin Powers to the Simpsons to Futurama, it's fairly easy to knock up an approximation of 'Bondian' theme music, so anything that sounds like that risks sounding like parody even if a) it's actually in front of a Bond film and b ) it's good.
As I said, it's a fine line and just one look at the differing opinions that abound regarding the new films changes in direction/adhering to formula show what a difficult job it is to keep everything familiar but fresh.

He hasn't seen Casino Royale so he isn't talking about it, who knows what he'll think of it. This is about Licence to Kill - Die Another Day.

Simple as that.

I remember in an interview around the time TND came out, Barry said that Arnold was the natural successor to the Bond scores or something along those lines. Personally I love the score in TND, easily the best non Barry Bond score. Unfortunatley Arnold said it correctly at the time of TND "I did everything I wanted to do with a Bond score in TND"

Yes, he said he put everything into it, in case he was never going to get another chance to.

Actually, he even went further than that during an interview with a Belgian magazine in 1987, saying that "working with A-Ha was like working with the Hitler Jugend". Although I consider him the best film composer in movie history, I can't stand the man's arrogancy. So what if he's a genius, what gives him the right to be so brutally honest it sounds like pure hurtful slamming? And by the way, but I think somebody mentioned this already, he was the one who suggested Arnold to Barbara Brocolli, after her heard his Shaken and Stirred album.

I wonder what it really was that made the The Living Daylights title song experience so chaotic (even though things like working style, etc. are mentioned) compared to some of the other title songs.

WTF? In that article, Brosnan's name isn't mentioned ONCE!
If you read the article carefully, Barry actually complains about the post-Saltzman films, which start with TSWLM. And yes, idiots, that includes your precious Dalton movies, but no- you hateful pricks have to misinterpret statements from another Bond legend your way. Both MI6 and CBn seem to have been completely overrun by MALICIOUS, MISCHIEVOUS, MORONIC Brosnan haters. If you represented the majority of Bond fans, I would be sick to be one. Luckily, it's not the case- there are still A LOT of Brosnan fans out there, as IMDb boards show.
Go Brosnan! Go Craig! [censored] both, Brosnan and Craig haters!!!!

Oh, I see. I think you misunderstand me.
I will be the last one to say that all Brosnan's films were an improvement over anything.
All I am saying is that Barry hasn't singled Brosnan's movies out as the ones he is not fan of (whatever it actually means).
If you read the full article, you will realize that Barry dislikes Bond films since TSWLM, and that includes the two Dalton endeavors, for instance.
Also, the post-DAD trend of conducting witch hunts for Brosnan is simply disgusting imo.

Where in this discussion has anyone been slagging off Brosnan?

I guess, post #2 by JimmyBond, kindof. :)
I truly owe y'all an apology. Sorry, I had just to vent my anger after reading reactions on other boards. Perhaps, my post may go through as a "preemptive one"?

Oh, agreed. I thought Brosnan did well as Bond, too. Like Dalton, they didn't give him a lot to work with, though.

In fact, I could give people a guide to watching the films after TMWTGG (a Harry Satzman co-production which was wretched from beginning to end, IMO). For my money, here are the only scenes to watch from each film:

TSWLM: Pre-title sequence, Egypt scenes. Car chase. This is probably the best of the Bonds post-Connery.
Moonraker: Pre-title sequence. That's it.
FYEO: Cliff scene with the Dove; Ski chase; Mountain climbing scene. Good moments, boring movie.
Octopussy: Blech.
NSNA: The first half. The second half is almost unwatchable.
AVTAK: Blech.
TLD: First 20 minutes and sporadic bits. Probably the second best of the films post-Connery.
LTK: Sea escape.
GE: First 20 minutes. #3 film after Connery left.
TND: Blech.
TWINE: Double blech
DAD: Blech another blech.

I don't blame any of the actors. I blame EON for not getting proper talent behind the camera. EON just became it's own little nation inside MGM, promoting from within and losing touch with the outside film world, which passed them by. It looks like they're changing that now, thank God.

Um no, not really (and gee, thanks for singling me out). If you reread my post, here I'll do one better, I'll paste it:

He's never been shy about slamming the Brosnan outings. I doubt he's purposely picking on Casino Royale, he probably hasnt been following it and doesnt know it's going to be a different kind of Bond film.

I mentioned that "in the past" Barry has not been shy of slamming the Brosnan films. I recall him mentioning that he won't write a score for the films because they (EON) turned them into action flicks, something that didnt happen until Brosnan became Bond. Notice I never once said it was his fault, I just mentioned that Barry had brought up the Brosnan films in the past, and probably assumed the new one would just be more of the same.
