I like the idea of Geoffrey Palmer, and as he's mates with Dench and has already been in a Bond film playing an admiral, it's not that implausible, either. He can do gruff, grumpy and irritable magnificently - witness his narration for the BBC series GRUMPY OLD MEN. :)

I think Charles Dance would also make a good M. Very austere.

I like this idea. Dance looks a bit like Ian Fleming.

Come in 007. I recall you shot me. Well, now I am your new boss. What do you say about that ?

I'd like to see him to take the role as 007's boss. It'd be a nice touch to get the guy, who got executed by DC in Road to Perdition.

I could live with Ciaran Hinds as M. He's certainly an accomplished actor. And he played Julius Caesar. That's enough to put him in my good books.

I've never liked Dench in the roll (at least not the role they gave her) - always complaining about Bond's male chauvenism (YAWN). It's one thing for M to correct Bond because he's irresponsible or out of line or goofing off (like the male M's did), but from the moment M called Bond a dinosaur and tried to defend her ability as a woman to be "M" I tuned out - because that does NOT come across as authority to me - but insecurity - as someone who is more self conscious of their gender than their job. I did like her best in TND but least in GE, TWINE and DAD.

I know we won't see them in the roll, but it sure would be fun seeing Rog or Tim (especially Tim) as "M" - not simply because they are ex-Bonds, but because I've always thought it would be interresting if M looked like he once did what Bond could now do. If there was a disagreement between Bond and M, Dalton would be imposing to say the least.

I can see the conversation:

M (Dalton - 3-4" taller than Craig): Why are you late?
Bond: Business, you know.
M: Listen, if your late again I'm going to kick your head in, do you understand me? :)
Bond: Um, yeah. :P
M: You didn't hear me wrong. There wasn't any atmosfeedrrick anawmuhleee.
Bond: Yes sir. :P

That would be fun wouldn't it. Not gonna happen, I know, but fun to imagine.

Regards.

Ciaran Hinds is wonderful but I'd prefer to see him as a villain than as M. We've been lacking strong villains lately and I think CH would be spot on. He certainly gives me the impression that he's in charge :) .

Yeah, I was weighting the same option when I made that suggestion, about him becoming the new M.
He'd be a really good villain. Blofeld type, recurring villain, or just one movie ordeal for Bond.James Bond. But nonetheless, a strong villain.

Terrance Stamp or Patrick Stewart

I definitely like Patrick Stewart. As soon as I saw the topic, he was the first person who came to mind.

Agree, Patrick Stewart would be a good choice (but is he crusty enough?). Anyone notice how he never seems to age. Look at the first season of Star Trek Next Generation and X3 (we're talking almost 20 years here folks!) The guy looks almost the same.

That might be because being bald hides his grey/white hair. The absence of hair has lessened the visible signs of age on him. While looking at a photo of him from ST: TNG and another from X3, you can see that he indeed looks older in the latter, but the differences are very minute.

Completely agree.

As for that Dalton-M vs. Craig-Bond bit, that's exactly why M can't be too intimidating. :)

I second those who've suggested Geoffrey Palmer (Hargreaves debate redux) and Patrick Stewart (once Craig is established in his own right, the perfect pick).

I'd also say Anthony Hopkins, but I'm still hoping for him as a Bond villain. He'd be fantastic.

An unknown male British actor 60+ with white hair, smokes... and is bitter. I know that sounds familiar, but it worked. Forget all this political correctness. The head of intelligence CAN be male. I'm sure that wouldn't be considered unequal employment oppertunities.

Age could be a factor, too. Palmer being Dench's comtemporary, he may be too old when she is finnshed with the role.
What about the guy that played Tanner in Goldeneye? It would make sense that eventually Tanner replaces the current "M".

As much as I can see the logic in a possible Tanner M, I'm firmly in the camp of Bernard Lee clones as the only acceptable candidates for M. :P

I do still like the idea of Ciaran Hinds though...

You fancy him by any chance? :P I didn't quite gel with his Caesar... didn't quite fit with my image... would have preferred Patrick Stewart.

Tom Wilkinson was my original pick for the new M in Casino Royale(Ciaran Hinds was my original choice for Le Chiffre, I still think he would do well as a villian) and I still think he would be a fine choice but I'm really warming up to the idea of Bernard Hill.

cHOICE 1: Tom Wilkinson
2: Brian Cox
3: Ciaran Hinds
4: Rupert Everett ( imagine a cross dressing M. One scene he is wearing a tux. Next scene he wears a dress. Everybody confused, including the SPECTRE folks. Most politically correct move). :P
5: Looking at all the casting in the past they will just go ahead an cast the guy who plays Bernard in Lost as M. Anyway EON are always out to cast the lesser knowns or no-knowns. :)

A very strong actor to talk sense into Craig's bond will be Jeremy Irons.

That's the first time I've noticed anyone thinking this way. Perhaps that's exactly what they'll do - go with a lady M again.

I really love the idea of Geoffrey Palmer.. he has that ex-naval look to him.

I always feel bad betraying my blessed gender, but I'm ready for another male M. The dynamic of the M/Bond relationship is drastically changed when you make M a woman, IMHO. That fatherly aspect of male M was always one of my favorite parts of the Bond films, and much as I love Dench, I'm ready for her to be on her way :)

Actually, the head of MI6 in real life has always been a man. I'm under the presumption that they based her M off of Stella Rimington, who was the head of MI5 in 1992-1996. Just for the sake of going back to the "Fleming style", they really should make M a man.

My choices:

Brian Cox.
Tom Wilkinson
Michael Gambon
Charles Dance
Bernard Hill
Patrick Stweart
