If they stick with the female M, what is your opinion on the actress, Helen Mirren?

She's a great actress, and would be fantastic for it.

Helen Mirren is not a bad choice. She could also be a great villianess.
Who ever they have play the role, perhaps, should play it with a diability ( limp, eye patch, etc.).
It would make sense that the head of MI6 may have been a former field agent, maybe someone with tons of field experience, that is behind a desk after being injured in the line of duty.
What do you think?

Oh wait. Wait ! Roger's 79, so let's forget that idea :)

edit: No. I dont think it should be anyone wearing an eye patch. Fake leg, cripple M could be ok. But I say nay to eye patches or arms replaced with hooks.

I'm wondering how many more films Dench plans to do with the series.

Point taken :P
As for Judi, she appears to be in good health, so maybe she will be around for awhile. I like her, so I hope so :)

I think go back to a man.

Make it a British actor that almost no-one outside the UK has heard of. Like they do with a lot of the roles they cast.

Always remember - the actors cannot be bigger than the Bond actor, or the movie itself.

They won't pick anyone famous for the role of M.

You have to look at British films, and British TV drama for the actor.

Timothy Dalton would be an awsome M for Daniel Craig...

I like the suggestions of Moore and Caine too...

Has no-one got any imagination?

One rule for all posts - no Bond actor will EVER return to play another role. Period!! OK??

I can imagine the news about Tanner being in Goldeneye. Who would you pick? someone would ask. Then we get the suggestions - Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, Mel Gibson, Hugh Grant....

and who do they cast? Michael Kitchen.

Expect the next M to come from the same background as Michael Kitchen.

I would like to see Geoffrey Palmer (Admiral Roebuck in Tomorrow Never Dies) to become M in the future. He would make a fine M for Craig's Bond.

Heh, but then the dispute might arise whether or not M and Admiral Roebuck are the same man much like Robert Brown as Admiral Hargreaves in The Spy Who Loved Me and M in Octopussy thru A View to a Kill.

Frankly, I'd rather they go back to a male M. Someone distant and stern who even provokes a bit of fear in Bond. Dench and even Brown seemed too much like grandparents to be like that.

The Bond-M relationship works better and makes far more sense under the likes of Bernard Lee. That's an approach worth returning to.

I don't know. I think Dench is going to be properly scary as M in CR. When they replace her though, I'd like them to go back to a man in the role.

Yes, they may go back to a man in the role, whenever they decide to replace Dame Judi.

How old is she, by the way?

I think Judi does a good M, but to replace her with another woman as M would seem to be pushing the point a little too far ("Look how we move with the times! We let a woman do it!" :) ). I also don't like the idea of actors returning as different characters but I have to agree that Tim Dalton could do a great M. Shame that won't be possible. Alan Rickman wouldn't be an entirely bad choice, or Sam Neill.

One of the reasons they chose a woman to be M, was because the real head of MI5 was a woman at the time.

Is George Lazenby too much to wish for? He's certainly the right age, and might be willing to do it if asked.

Whst is wrong with some people?

An old Bond actor coming back into a new film would be too distracting and weird, and a terrible decision.

Certainly it would overshadow the rest of the movie, not least Daniel Craig's performance.

Dont know because Judi Dench is kind of a mother figure in the role and i like her a lot..She plays it cold and with a motherly emotion in Pierce's Bond movies...Her character isnt the M character fom the Goldeneye to Die Another Day, i heard...Could you tell me if she is the same boss as in Pierce's flicks, plz?Maybe after one or two more bond, they should opt for a male M.. Michael Gambon perhaps..?Or perhaps michael Caine(thou he wouldn't do it)?God, i dont wanna see a bond actor turning up as M coz it would be and sound so odd...

So Brosnan is out, then?

Seriously, it will be a man. We can basically be sure of that. The novelty of a female M has worn off, and the nostalgia of a male M is too powerful to resist.

As for specific actors, it could be almost anybody. It wouldn't be a famous actor like Anthony Hopkins, though. Probably a television actor. My personal choice would be Brian Cox. He's Scottish, authoritative, and silver-haired. He looks a bit like a cross between Bernard Lee and Marlon Brando. Best of all, he's about sixty years old, which means he could play the role for a long time. Just look at this picture and tell me he couldn't be M:

In fact, if anything, he looks too much like Bernard Lee! He's a very capable actor, but not too much of a star.

He certainly looks the part. Good pick Pussfeller.

I think Charles Dance would also make a good M. Very austere.
