TMWTGG dark?I think I am going to watch TMWTGG tonight. I always enjoy it these days, although I find myself flicking past Sheriff Pepper, just because his comic relief is jarring in one of the darker Bond movies.
With or without Dubya Pepper, I wouldn't call it that.
Sure, Moore's at his most Fleming, and there are some Fleming flourishes - the meal with Scaramanga, etc, but the overall tone of the film isn't dark IMO.

Yeah. Watching it again last time, it is surprisingly dark.
- It's one of the few 007 movies where Bond is really rough with a woman. He slaps Andrea about before threatening to break her arm.
- Rape is suggested by Scaramanga's treatment of Andrea. He even "seduces" her with his gun.
- Andrea's death is really quite eerie
- Scaramanga slowly assembling his gun before executing his business partner, Hai Fat.
- The sequence from Gibson's assasination, Bond's arrest and subsequent boat ride with Lt. Hip isn't what you expect from a Moore film either.
- Bond's threatening confrontation with Lazar
- The kung fu sequence (before the schoolgirls intervene)
- M is annoyed with everyone in this film. There is no comic relief from Q.
- the duel

Now that you say so, I believe you're right. I watched it the other day and it's true. TMWTGG is one of the darkest films and sincerely the darkest moment of Moore as Bond. I believe though that that's because of Lee's appearance in the film. He gives a different tone and Moore follows him. In this one Bond looks more like a killer rather than a spy.

A double feature of The Man with the Golden Gun and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Interesting combination! How did it go?

Haven't watched them yet as a double feature, DaveBond21. Did watch both of them a lot late last year and early this year in honor of their 40th and 35th anniversaries, respectively. Both have more in common than some might think:
The first 2 non-Connery Bond films scored by John Barry,
Both feature a bigger star name actor than usual as the primary villain,
Both were Christmas time releases in their respective years,
Both have relatively lower-scale sci-fi plots,
Both have the villain kidnap the leading lady and Bond has to go and rescue her,
They were the Bond films to be released in the first and last years of the Nixon presidency.
Anyway, after eating Japanese food earlier this week, I'm in the mood for You Only Live Twice.
