Well, looks like the game is out, or is available for pre-order. And in my opinion, and reflecting the hopes of many on this thread, the gamemakers have dropped the ball. The properties are all just movie titles and the 22nd property (first purple) is just "Double-0 Assignment".

Looks like the only thing Licence to Post took from our advice is that he started with Dr. No in the purple spot and worked his way up to Casino Royale at Boardwalk, contrary to his initial idea of Dr. No at Boardwalk.

Each "property"/film title has a picture of Bond in action from the film or dvd art (FRWL). No Piz Gloria, no Fort Knox, no Crab Key, no Scaramanga's Fun House. No fun.

The board center has the poster art: a muted mosaic of all the film posters.

The railroads are four of Bond's cars, rather than any of the railroads in the movies. No Orient Express.

Can't tell what the Electric Company and Waterworks have become, nor the Tax spaces.

The pieces are pretty nice: Odd-Job's hat, Rosa Klebb's shoe, the Aston Martin, the Lotus, the Acrostar jet, and a 007 logo.

The Chance and Community Chest cards have been turned into Bond Girl and Bond Villain cards. I guess that's okay. At least they will have more thought put into their messages.

The property deeds are pretty standard. No embellishments. The Monopoly signature spaces (Go, Free Parking, Go to Jail, Jail) are unchanged from the original.

I really was hoping for something better. Even the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars versions were taken more care of. I'm not going to buy it, but someone'll probably get it for me for Christmas, and for fun I'll keep playing my "James Bond Secret Agent 007 Game" from ages gone by.

Yes, I too saw an article on the game, and without owning it yet--feel the same way. So much more could have been done--so why wasn't it? Probably in a hurry to rush it out--which begs the question-WHY, since it would have much more going for it had they made it better and just shot for a release around November, when most people could buy it for their "bondian friends" for Christmas. Personally, a release in the middle of summer PRIOR to a Bond release is lacklustre and then when the same doesn't sell as it should--they'll go back and say that no one was interested in yet ANOTHER Monopoly set; which is interesting because for years fans have been clamoring for just such an edition.

I, actually, am quite happy with it. They may have been able to add more, but it needs to be able to appeal to the general public. And if you really think about it, this could've been so much worse.

That's just it. The general public will not buy this, so it does not need to appeal to everybody. Parker Brothers licensed USAOPOLY to create various niche versions of the game. If you go to anyone's game closet, they probably have a version, maybe two, of Monopoly: an old standard set they've had around for years, and maybe a niche set. There have been so many: LOTR, cats, dogs, Batman, multiple Star Wars, Simpsons, versions made for particular cities, Spongebob Squarepants, Disney - you name it.

Do you own any of the versions that do not interest you?

Only Bond fans, and family members of Bond fans, will buy this thing. The general public will not seek it out.

That is why License to Post, the game designer, came on this site to begin with - he wanted to know what we wanted, then didn't hang around to find out.

Look at the Star Wars game: the houses and hotels are spaceships, special Star Wars gold coins were minted for a $1000 Monopoly denomination and even the paper money was specially designed, the properties are locations from the films.

This could have been so much better.

I see your point, but maybe after actually buying the game, we might end up liking it. Who knows how it might actually turn out to be?

Maybe. But honestly, I've never been able to finish a game of Monopoly. Any game takes up to three hours and my friend always turns into a b*st*rd after he starts puting hotels on the properties.

How about designing a real tie-in game based on Bond and the film Casino Royale? Or does that take minds more creative than License to Post's?

Assuming License to Post was the real deal, the end result is a far cry from what would have made this a truly special game for us fans, and not just casual Monopoly players.

AWFUL. AWFUL. AWFUL. I feel compelled to write an article on this insult of a game patently devoid of any creativity or innovation, but then it would look like I valued my own opinion too much. Which I do. So I might.

I don't even particularly like Monopoly and I'm still revulsed by the slapdash generic look of the game. I couldn't feel more disgusted by anything else made of cardboard, various plastics and a trace amount of metal. It's Satan's own bowel water. It makes me want to paper cut the webbing between my fingers and toes and then lick them with salted tongue.

In fact, the cretinous [censored] hen who came up with the whole 40th anniversary design needs to be taken out and shot. It's awful. And this car crash of a Monopoly version just exacerbates my utter contempt for the polygonal-silhouettes-and-blue-on-white-serpentine-font blandness of the whole scheme.

Anything else? Have you never met [insert name of washed-up celebrity made of such things: for the hell of it, and for illustration purposes only, let's say Mr Brosnan]?

Bleh. I always associate various colors with each film, none of which match those on the game.

I'm pretty disappointed by it. Mostly because of all the good ideas that were brought forth in this thread when it came to design, film locations to include as properties, and so on.

It's pretty sad when each film is just thrown onto one of the property spaces (including the dreadful 'Double-Oh Assignment').

Oh, what could have been...

I'm still awaiting 007 'Operation' where you have to remove parts from Bond.

Perhaps 'Hungry Hungry 007'?

/still going to buy the blasted thing.

Hi, it's me again....

I'd like to start by saying that i went a bit "out of my bounds" on the original post. My post turned out to be too early. I feel obligated to respond but do not want to jeopardize my job or my company's relationship with EON.

I am a fan.

I fought for locations...and lost.

Regarding exterior packaging: We had to follow EON's supplied graphics and rules to the letter. I had other versions that you may have preferred, but they were out of the question legally.

Hasbro has many mandates that limit design and development. Too many to list but they address a lot of suggestions that many people have when discussing licensed monopoly games. One example is the 4 corners do not change from the original games. If Hasbro does it, it is Hasbro's right to do so. My company must play by Hasbro's rules.

Image assets are more limited than you might imagine. I was quite surprised by what was and was not available.

NSNA is not owned by EON and therefore cannot be a part of the game in any way.

I'd like to be clear that this game was not mailed in. I did not get my way at several turns. I believe that my way is your way. That being said, I tried to make the best possible game (for all of us) given the circumstances. The Chance and Chest Cards for example. Each card features a different Bond Girl or Villain on the back with text and directive corresponding to that character's film on the other side. A new idea we were pleased that Hasbro approved. Our sculptor did a fantastic job on the tokens. Overall, thanks to forums like this, voices are being heard more often now than ever before. People like myself are paying attention. I may get in trouble for this post (i hope not). But I can only see postive things coming from your continued discussion on these types of products. As I would like to have them as an asset when pushing for ideas in the future...especially on any Bond related items. I'll be checking back if you'd like to continue this discussion.

Best,

LTP
