Latest Entertainment Weekly, featuring summer releases, is pretty downbeat about the chances of Invasion being good. Main points: filming started before Craig had even been formally cast as Bond...filming ended, they say, nearly thirteen months ago and the film has been in the can ever since...reshoots...and, most important, two other directors were brought in--three, counting the Wachowski Bros as two. Plus, the official director doesn't seem to be with the promotional program.
Still, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, an all-time classic story line...I'll wait till August 17 with high hopes.
EW doesn't mention that Joel Silver successfully pulled off the same stunt before with the Mel Gibson movie Payback; early test screenings were a dud, so they reshot about half the film, the original director Brian Helgeland took a hike, and the end result was a success. I seem to remember Mr. and Mrs. Smith also had extensive reshoots, and that was one of the biggest hits of that year. For some reason there's still a stigma that reshoots = automatic disaster. An August 17 release date, huh? The studio must have already decided that the movie will bomb. Late July to mid September is regarded as the graveyard shift for summer movies.
I'm not sure the producers of The Simpsons movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3, or Stardust would agree with that wisdom.
And I'm sure that the producers of THE ISLAND, MIAMI VICE, SNAKES ON A PLANE, and MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND would.
Well personally I think its pretty obvious that all of those movies failed for reasons other than their release dates. Anyway, TALLADEGA NIGHTS, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, WEDDING CRASHERS, and COLLATERAL all did pretty well in that same time frame too.
And we're supposed to assume that INVASION will do pretty well?
We cannot simply assume the movie will be a dud based on the time when it will be released. the fact that there have been extensive reshoots and it has not been relesaed yet is reason for concern but i do not think that their decision of when to release it reflects on their opinions about the film.
also wasnt snakes on a plane supposed to be the next huge thing so i doubt the studio would have released that during the "crap season". and as for the island, that film was simply poorly marketed by the studio as it did not explain the movie at all and tried to make it look more confusing then it was which was the reason for its failure in the states. it was marketed as another large michael bay action film overseas where it was actually successful.

Wasn't really sure where to post this thread, and I'm sure the good moderators will move it if it's in the wrong forum.
Cinematical has a first look at the new poster for INVASION, Kidman and Craig's long-gestating quasi-remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.
http://www.cinematic...ive-first-look/
I have mixed feelings about the poster. I like the color scheme, but I don't think I'd get much of a sense of what the film was about if I didn't already know something about the movie. The tag line isn't very inspiring, but Craig looks good on the front, and it's great to see him getting above-the-title billing with Kidman, as obviously his well-reviewed performance in CR has generated enough name recognition to help promote the film.
Now you've got me curious, Grav. I have mixed feelings about this too, but I'm dinged if I can think how to improve it. As far as colors go, I preferred the white and blue poster, with the handwritten warning from mother. But that one also failed to get at the heart of the story. And the main beats of the story are well-known to all, leaving all of us to wonder what they've done that's different from any of the previous films or even the recent TV show. Sooooo....what would have been the ideal poster for this version?

It sure seems the studio isn't getting behind this one. But is this a sign from heaven or a sign from hell? Dunno. I'll go to see it because of Craig. Some will go because of Kidman. Some will go because they've seen it (with different actors) before and want to see it again. Maybe the studio thinks that's enough to get a good buzz going?
