But Lazenby doesn't appear to be doing himself any favours, either.

Still, how petty of Pierce. Is it just me, or has the guy suddenly become a jerk?

This doesn't seem like something he would say...
On the contrary, given Brosnan's comments earlier this year about EON and the Bond character it sounds exactly like the sort of thing he would say.

I think George Lazengy was just upset that he's such a forgotten Bond and not in the spotlight. With Brosnan just being fired, he's starting to go through the same anger.
The funny thing is that Lazenby played the character better in his one film than Brosnan did in his four.
They probably both deserve each other - Laz the man who chucked Bond up when he could have been the best, Brozza who thought he was the best and therefore indispensible and then got chucked.
And it is true, Laz was a better Bond than Broz, regardless of "acting" ability.

But it's also interesting to understand how Playboy interviews work. Playboy interviewers spend an enormous amount of time over numerous sessions with their subjects. So, it's maybe ten days (spread out over a month or two) several hours a day. The subject gets relaxed, gets candid, blurts. This is why Playboy has such famous interviews, this is why the stuff said in Playboy interviews remains among the most famous quotes offered by an enormous variety of people. This is why, all these years later, we're still talking about the Connery Playboy interview. You don't get that kind of off-the-cuff intimacy from a press junket.

Excellent observation, my thoughts exactly.
Tim & Sir Roger, still the only Bonds who haven't been nasty and bitter afterwards.

It's not just you; although "suddenly"... hmm...
Still, no-one's yet read this in full so it's possible he's been misquoted, but I do hope in due course that Mr Brosnan achieves (dread phrase) closure on James Bond, everyone moves on and we cease to be bothered with this.
